Who Will Be The Marlins Closer Next Year?

Featured Replies

lol... wow. The guy throws like 85 MPH... look at his BAA and strikeout numbers.

I'd rather put Nate Bump at closer

I just received an e-mail from the Florida Marlins titled "Find a Job with the Florida Marlins". Maybe I will send in my resume for the closer job.

I am 30, kind of fat, and do not take my shirt off in public. But I can throw the bean baby!!

sorry guys....but WHO CARES who the closer is...Im concerned who the MARLINS are and where they are going

Better get in shape fast...I'll get you an invite to ST and see what you've got

I'm excited about Resop, but I don't think he's ready for the duties yet. He'll be great in '07, I don't have a doubt. I think he, Bowyer and Messenger can develop into a nice trio of relievers down the road.

Nah not yet.

Gimme a few years. Hopefully my name will be known by someone

I'm thinking Bowyer will probably get every chance to win the job, since he was supposed to be in the Twins' pen this season. Will he do well at closer right away? Tough call, probably be a good idea to give him 7th and/or 8th innings for a while and then suit him up to close later, but yanevaknow. Going to be an interesting battle to see who gets to pitch days Dontrelle isn't on the hill.

Based on the trends the last couple of seasons with Todd Jones and Armando Benitez, I would take a guess at Danny Graves. He is a former closer in search of any job and looking to prove himself once again. I think that the fish can get him for no more than $1 million, if even that much. He's also a former Hurricane. He's worth the gamble if they are signing guys like B. Moeller and L. Harris; Graves is nearly in there category of desperation for a chance to be a closer again. It would be nice with Bowyer setting up with the other 20,000 pitchers that we got in our "market correction."

Go for it. I answered that ad a couple of weeks ago when they traded Louie. I negotiated hard and got a $25,000/ 1 year deal that they are going to defer for the next 5 seasons. Oh, and they just told me the other day that I will be batting second right after D-Train. All we need is for someone to answer the add for a catcher and a LF that can catch the ball.

I thought I would mention this here because I was just astounded - fall on the floor in complete disbelief astounded - that Detroit is paying Todd Jones $11 million over two years!!

Given that Jones was so close to a deal further adds to the confusion as to why we didn't offer him arbitration. Did we just not want the picks?

Draft picks cost money and thats something this ownership does not want to do. Its sad when u can't cough up 2 - 2.5 million dollars for 2 Draft picks.

Rick Vaughn AKA Travis Bowyer

Jack Parkman: What do you call that garbage?

Rick Vaughn: It's my eliminator. I've got another pitch. You get a piece of it, I'll let you name it.

[Vaughn pitches and Parman hits the ball out of the park]

Jack Parkman: I'd, uh, call it the masturbator.

2yrs -$11 million, I think may have answered your own question PB.

I suspect the Marlins were afraid to go to arbitration knowing there wasn't a reasonable counter-argument to 40 saves last season and a value of $5-6 million in today's market. Since they won't be contending, it's just throwing good money after bad.

Sorry to bump the thread but the official website puts Bowyer as closer. There is likely some innings pitched or other database reason he is put, but found it interesting. Also has the rotation for next year penned, again likely for the same reason.

What I find interesting is that Scott Olsen's name is absent from the rotation and bullpen while we find both Yusmeiro Petit and Anibal Sanchez listed. But, like you say, this probably means nothing.

I was under the impression that the Marlins did not offer arbitration as I read somewhere (have no idea where or I got the wrong end of the stick) that the deal with Detroit was subject to the Marlins not offering arbitration, had they Detroit would have backed out as they didn't want to give up the draft picks. If this is reason then that would be a somewhat classy move move by the Marlins, of course it could just have been the cost of the draft picks signing as you was pointed out.

That is doubtful. Giving up draft picks didn't bother the Tigers last year when they signed Trevor Percival. Thats is also highly unlikely when there first round pick is protected and all that they would have to give up was a second. The answer is simple...it came down to money. Marlins didn't want spend the 2 - 2.5 million combine that would have taken to sign both draft picks which is just sad. Same goes for Juan Encarnacion who is a similar player to Jacque Jones who has already declined Minnesota arbi offer.

IMO that was the worst decision the Marlins have made during this whole off season, right up there with what they got in exchange for Luis Castillo. The FO cost us 3 prospect by not offering arbi to Encarnacion and Jones.

Offering arbitration to Encarnacion?

(As a figure of speech, not personal) You have to be out of your mind. The risk of JE asking for and winning $5+ million is too great to take the chance.

As for Jones, you may be right.

Compare the # not that big of a difference. Juan E also has a better arm likely also a better OF defensively, more versitile and for the last 3-4 season has played in one of the best pitchers ball parks in the major's. Yes I don't like him but when Jacque Jones declines arbitration cause he has 3 year offers on the table I believe not offering Juan E arbi is unacceptable. Jones should have been a no brainer.

It's almost not worth arguing. Encarnacion, by most media accounts, quit on the Marlins last season. It isn't about comparing him to JJ, it's about not being willing to take the risk that that Enc would wind back on the roster. through the arbitration process

Where's he going to play in any event?

Certainly not right field, everyone from Brickell to Bejing to Botswana knows Hermida has that position locked up. CF? Maybe. But you have to ask yourself, do you really want a guy who quit on his team infecting the new kids and being paid way out of proportion for doing so?

So, the price we pay for being risk adverse is giving up a draft pick. I respect your beliefs, but for me it's no big deal.

Im pretty sure Juan E knows he doesn't fit long term or short term with the fish which is another reason he doesn't accept arbitration. Does he want to risk not getting playing time at the expensive of guys like Williangham, Aguila, Reed, Dillion etc.. that by itself doesn't send a good signal to other gm's andreceiving negative treatment from the FO for accepting arbitration and the media if it is true he gave up on the Marlins. I find it hard to believe it takes a one year deal to return to the fish for likely a 1year - 6million where he can easily get elsewhere 3 for 16-18 or 2 for 12-14. Juan E is not in the same boat with guys like Kevin Millwood, Greg Maddux where they hae a pretty good history of success and can gamble on accepting arbitration and banking on having a good season. But everyone has there beliefs. These are mines. To me the only reason this didn't happen is simple. $$$$$$$$

I watched a report on Uggie last night on Sportscenter. I don't think he's guilty. Supposedly he almost killed 5 men and did all kinds of incredibly cruel things to them. But he was the only one charged. One guy can do that to 5 grown men? Sounds fishy to me.
