Who Will Be The Marlins Closer Next Year?

Featured Replies

Hey fellas, just curious what your thoughts are on who will close for the fish in 2006?

I really hope they sign someone with a bit more experience. I had read that they were considering Alfonseca as the closer, but since he wasn't offered arbitration, I guess that idea is out the window.

Rudy Seanez wasn't offered arbitration by the Pads.. It'd be nice to see him come back and close for us... Give Resop and Bowyer some time to develop into closers... They have great arms, but I don't think they're ready.

Right now Bowyer but we'll probably try for someone like Looper or Seanez.

If you put a kid into the ninth inning and he blows a few, his confidence is gone, and that's hard to get back.

Bowyer is ready. He could probably come in and just throw fastballs and save 30/37 or something, which isn't lights out, but it's good enough. If he can further develop his slider and/or changeup I think he's definitely ready. I would use him. Forget Seanez or anyone else. Let's just go with Bowyer for now. Might as well see what he has.

I'll second that. Use Resop & Bowyer as the 7th & 8th inning guys.

Don't count out Messenger, I think he has the "eye of the tiger" killer instincts to be a closer. He just has to pitch a little better, lol.

that would be my goal if we could find a way to afford him.

I thought I would mention this here because I was just astounded - fall on the floor in complete disbelief astounded - that Detroit is paying Todd Jones $11 million over two years!!

No wonder he declined arbitration. :D

Wrong as usual , as the previous poster mentioned he wasnt offered arbitration

If the FO goes ahead and has a bunch of younger guys in the bullpen it would be better to have a closer by committee.

If you'll notice, I immediately agreed I was wrong.

Im thinking more of the lines of Danny Graves

We know what he has done in the past and he probably would sign a 1 year deal for cheap to boost his stock and sign else where next year.

Danny Graves

1998 8 saves 81.1in 3.32era

1999 27saves 111.0in 3.08era

2000 30saves 91.1in 2.56era

2001 32saves 80.1in 4.15 era

2002 32saves 98.2in 3.19 era

2004 41saves 68.1in 3.95 era

I know thats really bad.

One bad year and you guys say he sucks.

For the price that we couuld probably get him it is definitely worth it. A guy who has experience closing and is looking for a 2nd chance to show that he still deserves to close in this league.
