February 19, 200620 yr it will be a great loss to this game despite what his detractors and haters say.
February 19, 200620 yr I'll believe it when I see it. PERFECTLY SAID! Barry Bonds said he will retire after the 2006 season with or without breaking Hank Aaron's all-time home run record, which he is 47 home runs away from tying, according to a report in USA Today. The Giants left fielder played in only 14 games last season as he battled knee problems. He will earn $18 million in 2006 in the final season of a five-year, $90 million contract. "I'm not playing baseball anymore after this," Bonds told USA Today in a telephone interview. "The game [isn't] fun anymore. I'm tired of all of the crap going on. I want to play this year out, hopefully win, and once the season is over, go home and be with my family. Maybe then everybody can just forget about me." Bonds has won a record seven National League Most Valuable Player Awards. He set the single-season home run mark with 73 long balls in 2001. The 42-year-old won four consecutive MVPs before an injury-marred 2005 season. He batted .286 with five home runs to put his total at 708, third all-time and six homers behind Babe Ruth. http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...t=.jsp&c_id=mlb
February 20, 200620 yr i don't believe him...its just that time of the month again for him...comm'on everyone knows that Barry PMSes from time to time...he'll get over it and beat hammerin hank
February 20, 200620 yr Gotta love the story changing already: But in various conversations during the past few weeks with MLB.com, Bonds said he is considering retirement, but needs to have those conversations later in the season with the people closest to him. "I'll play this year and I'm not sure about 2007," Bonds said. "I'll speak with my wife about it, and my mother. I speak with my mother more than anybody about these things. It's getting harder and harder. Going to the same cities, eating the same food. I'm going to be 42 years old. It's getting near the end." At times, Bonds has been more definitive saying things like "this is it for me" or "baseball isn't any fun for me anymore" and that he doesn't like "what's going on in the game." But then he quickly changes his mind and takes a brighter outlook. He said if the Giants can go all the way this season and win the World Series, it would be a good way to go out. "If that happens, I'll take my ring and go. You know what I mean?" said Bonds, who has only played in the World Series once -- with the Giants in a losing effort to the Angels in 2002. "That's all that's left for me. I couldn't care less about the record. I just want to win. If we don't win, I just don't know." http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/...t=.jsp&c_id=mlb Plus, you know that Barry is just going to say this is the media taking his quotes out of context and then reaffirm his stance of not talking to anyone except through his website.
February 20, 200620 yr You never know.. if barry gets 48 homers this year i'll eat my hat. By now, your hat will be about 85 years old, so it'll have lots of holes in it, mostly dust on the rest, and the other part will be regular. (Cotton)
February 20, 200620 yr I hope he breaks Aaron's record because of all the haters. I don;t care whether he breaks it or not, if he does then more power to him.
February 20, 200620 yr You never know.. if barry gets 48 homers this year i'll eat my hat. gotta love the I Love Lucy references... lol
February 20, 200620 yr I dont care when he retires he is a fun player to watch no matter what you say about him. No doubt he is gonna pass Ruth, not sure if he's gonna pass Hank though. Still he's gonna get walked a whole lot this year.
February 20, 200620 yr Peter Gammons said that he talked to Barry Bonds and Bonds told him that he doesn't care about breaking the record and passing Hank Aaron, he only wants to pass Babe Ruth.
February 20, 200620 yr ESPN had another report this morning. Apparently, Bonds thought he was talking to the USA Today reporter personally, not on the record. He's now saying that he doesn't know, and it all depends on his knees. He says right now he feels like he can play 5 more years, but he knows that realistically, he probably has only one maybe two more years... Personally, I think if the Giants win the Series this year, he'll retire... regardless of how many homeruns he hits. If they don't, I'll bet we see him back next year to challenge Aaron and for one last shot at a Series.
February 20, 200620 yr The enigma that is Barry Bonds: "If I can play [in 2007], I'm going to play; if I can't I won't," Bonds told MLB.com in a telephone interview Sunday. "If my knee holds up, I'll keep on going. I'm playing psychological games with myself right now. I don't want to set myself up for disappointment if things don't work out this season. So I go back and forth. Back and forth every day. These are the things that are going through my mind. This is what I'm struggling with." somehow i told you so doesn't do justice. Nobody really knows what he is going to do. All i know is that he is incredible.
February 20, 200620 yr i wouldn't be surprised if he brakes the record this year...... and if he doesn't he will be back in 2007......
