Rodriguez South Florida Sun-Sentinel Posted April 19 2006 What reliever Carlos Martinez thought would be nothing serious has turned into a possible season-ending injury. According to a club official, Martinez's MRI Tuesday revealed significant damage to a ligament in his right elbow. Whether or not Martinez will require Tommy John surgery is uncertain, but Martinez's rookie season appears to be over after 62/3 innings. Whether Martinez will undergo surgery depends on orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, who will perform his own exam today in his Birmingham, Ala., office. After Sunday's game against the Nationals, Martinez said he experienced some discomfort after a delivery in which his lead foot slipped on the mound. Martinez still managed to complete his second inning of work. He did not accompany the team to Cincinnati in order to undergo the MRI in South Florida. Monday, manager Joe Girardi said neither he nor anyone else watching from the dugout noticed anything that would indicate Martinez injured himself. His velocity remained in the mid-90s and his breaking pitches looked the same. Martinez, who turns 24 next month, made the jump from the Class A Florida State League to the big leagues after a stellar spring. The Marlins already were using him in meaningful, late-inning situations.

Not sure you can fault our coaching staff here...if his velocity remained the same and his pitches had their normal movement and Martinez did not indicate any discomfort...what else could they have done?
April 19, 200620 yr He did indicate discomfort, he was clearly shaking his arm out in that 2nd inning of work. I noticed it immediately, I was surprised the broadcasters didn't mention it and that nobody in the dugout seemed to.

April 19, 200620 yr Gotta wonder if he "tilted" at all after the Marlon Anderson encounter. Might've fired him a bit more and caused him to throw wrong or overthrow.

April 19, 200620 yr ugh!!! :banghead Man that is disappointing, for both Carlos and the team. He was a good-looking reliever. Well, scratch off one promising name from the bullpen this season. Damn... hopefully he can come back from this.

I only noticed it because it was abnormal to see him doing it. ooooh man...yea i believe you....i was really hoping this wouldnt be serious...lets just hope he pulls a nice recovery because once you go under the knife your never the same, for better or for worse.

April 19, 200620 yr Hopefully Dr. Andrews doesn't come into the equation at all. He was shaking his arm Sunday, but I also caught him once doing it that Friday. But since he did it only once I thought nothing of it.
April 20, 200620 yr Update: Martinez update: Rookie reliever Carlos Martinez has a right elbow ligament strain and has been advised not to throw for two weeks. The 23-year-old right-hander, who experienced elbow pain after throwing two innings in Sunday's game against the Nationals, will be evaluated at that time. Martinez visited Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala, where tests confirmed the ligament strain. April 20, 200620 yr lovely, thanks prin. So we'll see what Andrews says in 2 weeks. Girardi's going to need to take it easy on him even if he is okay. No more of that 2 innings stuff...
