May 16, 200620 yr To be honest, I am not worried. Why? Becuase its obvious that desptie Herges being overrused right now, he has played himself out of any chance he had to be with this team for a long period of time. He will be gone eventually. True, but for how long can you be patient? He is costing us games. I know we are rebuilding but any win helps the team morale. Instead Girardi is setting an example that losing is acceptable. I am worried because he is not just hurting himself, but, his team as well. He is poisin to the team everytime he gets on the mound. I realize this is frustrating but Girardi is letting the veteran take the lumps instead of the young guys that might not be ready to face high-pressure situations, seeing as Nolasco and Johnson are now in the rotation. Girardi wants the younger guys to buid up their confidence before they are thrown completely in the fire.

May 16, 200620 yr you guys crack me up. You bitch and complain about Herges but the fact is Girardi has to use the pitchers he has and it's a fact that he has absolutely no one in that pen that can be trusted with a lead. Herges is just one of the guys in waiting to come in to blow a game.
May 16, 200620 yr It should be illegal to let Herges pitch. That would require Florida lawmakers to actually give a darn about the Marlins.
May 16, 200620 yr It should be illegal to let Herges pitch. That would require Florida lawmakers to actually give a darn about the Marlins. Not if it's considered a crime against humanity
May 16, 200620 yr The thing is about our bullpen is that they are mostly rejects from another team (Not the minor league guys). I know sometimes they turn around but in this case they did not.
May 16, 200620 yr If we're building for the future, then there is no reason to have these washed up vets, ie Moehler, Wellmeyer, Herges, and Messinger on this team. They all suck. If you combined all their talents in to one pitcher you could get a decent middle reliever. Put some young guys in their and see if they stick, it can't be any worse then this foursome of losers
May 16, 200620 yr Wouldn't really call Messenger a washed up vet. He's 24 and has a total of 51 major league innings.
May 16, 200620 yr Messenger is not that bad....he has his good days and his bad days like all of the young pitchers....Kensing is good as well but last night was a tough night for the entire bullpen....some days are like that....then there are those days like those of last weekend... so the answer is what? EXPERIENCE...
May 16, 200620 yr the fact that Giardi leaves him in for so long is the true crime. Herges has been terrible and should be sent down to AAA. However, he never should have been left in the game long enough to give up the tying run in the 6th. Am I wrong, or does Giardi never seem to know when to take our pitchers out of games? I remember Dontrelle's first start of May when he gave up 4 runs and looked terrible, but Giardi had him finish the inning and than put him back in the next inning! And what happened? Dontrelle gave up 3 more runs. So blame Matt Herges, but also blame Joe Giardi. Bring back John Boles!
May 16, 200620 yr Herges would have to clear waivers to be demoted, but that probably wouldnt be a problem. Be better to just outright release him.
May 16, 200620 yr I fear that this season will consist of a constant revolving door policy, shuffling pitchers back & forth between the Marlins bullpen & our minor league affiliates, in the hope that we can find a few arms that stick. Seemed like it was working with Carlos Martinez. I like them calling up Kensing, Petit, and Pinto actually. Throw 'em in there. At some point I also think we could get a look at Resop, Tankersley, Sanchez, Julianel, and Carlyle, among others if necessary.

Or is it he can refuse a AAA assigment based on his performance time in MLB ? Girardi & Beinfest know he's not performing well right now, but he is a veteran and is that "veteran" presence on the team, supposedly a stabilizing forcer, and a teacher. He may have lost his ability to perform, but he probably hasn't lost his eye on the game, and that can help the younger players if they come to him and ask questions. Jo-Jo and Admin hope that he can rectify his play and be the stabilizer he was brought in to be. They will probably give him another month and then do something. Like its been said more than once, this year is not about winning now, as much as finding guys who can win in the future for the Marlins franchise.
May 16, 200620 yr Anyone know any inside info? I really want to know if the FO is thinking about saying bye to Herges.
May 16, 200620 yr The manager of a baseball team only can do so much. They cannot hit, field, or throw strikes. However, the quality of a manager is measured by his knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of his team (and his opponent), and of his ability to put his players in the best position to win games. This includes "situational" game management, such as knowing when (and who) to pinch hit, and the general use of your bullpen. Moreover, managers are also judged by their ability to adapt when new players and circumstances force them to change. When the Marlins win 8-0, or lose 0-8, it is difficult to blame (or credit) the manager. Often, those games involve poor (or great) starting pitching, and poor (or great) early hitting. Additionally, SOMETIMES the other team is just too good to beat, or impossible to lose to. HOWEVER, when the Marlins are consistently scoring runs, particularly in the beginning of games, it is up to the Manager to do everything he can to win the game. Joe Girardi has failed this team. Unlike, Reggie Arbercombie and Mike Jacobs, Girardi has shown NO improvement from opening day. He continues to use "veterans" in key situations - simply because they are veterans. He refuses to pull relief pitchers until they have given up 5 runs in an inning. He continually uses Herges in situations that have rarely turned out well for the Marlins. You cannot credit Girardi for "sticking" with Reggie, Jacobs, etc. His hand is forced. We have NOBODY even close to playing in the majors. BUT, Girardi has LOADS of pitching options. He has plently of arms in the minors that could do NO WORSE than Herges. Fire Girardi. It makes me sick to think that this guy might be managing our team when we actually might contend in a few years.

You bring up a few good points but I also know that you are the President of the Joe Girardi Hate Club. My problem with your post is this: You only deliver your tirades after we lose a tough game. Its fairly common knowledge amongst hardcore baseball fans that most teams have weak middle relievers. Why? Because all the guys that arent good enough to start games or close them end up as middle relievers. Name 10 teams that have a core of good middle relievers. Honestly, when he brought Herges in I thought I was going to lose control of my bowels BUT.......we still had a long way to go in the game. It wasnt like Joe brought Herges in for the 8th inning to get to Borowski. We had a lot of outs to get at that point. I agree with you on one thing.......Herges has to go. I'll be very suprised if Girardi gives him the opportunity to blow anymore games now that Pinto and Petit (hopefully Martinez soon) are up in the bigs.
