May 21, 200620 yr Then you are guarenteeing a 90+ loss almost every year, unless you catch lighting-in-a-bottle with the players like we have now. Its a real gamble, and it usually doesn't pan out. That also doesn't help the team to gain fans. It perpetuates the culture of losing, such as has happened in Tampa Bay and now in Kansas City. I remember the days in the 1980's when the Royals were one of the better organizations in MLB. Those days are long gone because of the craziness in MLB economics. No, doing a half rebuilding is gauranteeing 90+ losses. How many free agents did we sign in the last 3 years prior to this one. Pudge, Jones, Benitez, and Delgado. And 2 of those helped us win the Series, and Jones and Benitez were those lightning in a bottle guys. Free agents are always far from a sure thing, and if you can get good players from your organization it is always better. Well of course its better the develop your own, just look at the Atlanta Braves and Oakland. These guys we have now, are not really part of the Marlins future -- if you believe they are your nutz. These guys are stopgap guys until and if we get a new stadium. If more than one or two of them sticks with us after 2007 I'll be surprised. heywood...ok...here is something you are going to have to understand...MIAMI has south beach and lots of gorgeous women all over the place(see holly and Rachel)...any franchise from miami short of the Miami Hooters will never have a problem attracting free agents...nationally miami might not be seen as a great sports town...but then again, alot of people in south florida are scube diving, golfing, getting their groove on and watching sports from the comfort of their air conditioned living room...and if you give a kid getting drafted such as my lil cuz the option of getting paid to play baseball for any organization vs. going to class and not getting paid to play baseball...85% of them will take the pay...trust me on this one buddy...you have taken alot of flak on this thread and its because you wrong...now can some mod please close this up for me Or just not interested in baseball. I'm beginning to think its just that. And dude, you ask your cousin if he would rather be picked by the Marlins or the Angels, Dodgers, Cardinals or Yankees. You'll see he'd choose everyone of the others over the Marlins before settling on the Marlins. Kids will of course be happy to be drafted, but they'll not like the organization if its the Marlins, or Pittsburgh or Kansas City. When the Marlins get the # 1 or # 2 draft for 2007, I bet they don't take a HS player but a college player because they will be easier to sign. Dude... I can't believe I am responding to this garbage, but just think about what you are saying. Realize athletes care about the money first and foremost. If you are a draft eligible player you absolutely would want to be picked by the Marlins over the Yankees. The potential to fly thru the system is alot greater with a team like the Marlins than the Yanks. ...ugh I feel like i'm going to start rambling because your theory is just so obviously stupid, its like trying to prove to someone the sky is blue when they insist it is yellow. My main point is simply - 1.Drafted players want money and want to play in the bigs as soon as possible and get paid for it, that is OBJECTIVE NUMBER ONE for any player getting drafted. PLAY MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. / end thread..please. Someone.
May 21, 200620 yr Not to mention teams like the Cardinals and Yankees dont use prospects for anything besides trade bait unless they absolutely have to, and the kids will end up getting traded to a small market team anyway. But I guess by your line of thinking, if a kid rotting in A-ball because the big club doesnt use prospects gets traded to another team that actually develops and pushes prospects through a system, if that kid gets traded to the Marlins, or Royals, or Pirates he will just what...quit baseball?
May 21, 200620 yr Author Just wondering what ones are stop gaps? Willis? Olsen? Johnson? Nolasco? HanRam? Cabs? Hermida? Uggla? Jacobs(well, he might be)? Abercrombie(he might be too)? Pinto? Petit? Thats 12 players right there that could be considered the future for a reasonable amount of time at their respective positions. So why dont you let me know, which two are actually worth staying in your opinion. Because IMO and most others, in fact I'd say every other except you thinks they are good to go for quite some time. Dude don't you get it ? This ownership has no intention of keeping these players once they get good. He'll have to start paying them, and he can't pay them all at once, so most will go and he'll keep two (Not Willis or Cabrera they'll be gone by July 31) maybe 3. He needs to have a cheap team because even with a new stadium he'll not be able to afford a decent team.
May 21, 200620 yr Heywood, you make stupid and illogical posts. The fact that me, Hot_Rod_Todd/Spike is saying this, should show you the error of your ways. Yea, I went there.

PLAY MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL. / end thread..please. Someone. When have I said they want to be drafted and play in the Yankees or Boston organizations ??? I am just saying they don't want to be in the Marlins organization. If we had a history of eventually paying kids yes they would want to be here. Look at AZ they just signed one of their core guys Tracy, kids see that and say "Hey I wanna be there they have a young team and I can get paid if I do well", but when they see the Marlins they say "Oh no, not them, they bring you up to the show, but always try to be cheap with you, and then end up trading you just before you make the big money in arbitration". Tracy gets his money 2 years before Miguel does, and I assure you kids that play ball notice which organizations take care of their men, and which ones don't. The Marlins have a bad rep with draftable players, at leats this year from what I have heard from several U of Miami players. I talked to several of them before the Wake Forest series last weekend and we talked about the draft and several of them laughed when I asked about being taken by the Marlins. Heywood, you make stupid and illogical posts. The fact that me, Hot_Rod_Todd/Spike is saying this, should show you the error of your ways. Yea, I went there. No u guys are blinded by FO pucker-uppers here who want to paint a rosy picture of MLB. If it was so rosy, the Marlins would have had a stadium by now.
May 22, 200620 yr You fail to realize that buying out kids arby years is the exception, not the rule. Or thats the impression I have always had.
May 22, 200620 yr Well, think of it this way. What kid in his right mind would reject ANY major league contract, REALLY? Think, it won't happen! Their is opportunity to grow here, players would be happy and lucky to begin their careers here. Trust me!
May 23, 200620 yr Author You fail to realize that buying out kids arby years is the exception, not the rule. Or thats the impression I have always had. And Miggy is an exceptional player. Smarter to get him to sign a contract now for $ 3.5 million instead of waiting for arbitration and he gets $ 5 million. If they trade him (which is likely) he would be easier to trade with a signed contract instead of being an arby baby. You'd have better leverage and get more in return because the Miggy price would be less for the team buying him. Well, think of it this way. What kid in his right mind would reject ANY major league contract, REALLY? Think, it won't happen! Their is opportunity to grow here, players would be happy and lucky to begin their careers here. Trust me! Absolutely. Especially if they are a HS kid. They have college to leverage against the pros. If I am drafted by the Marlins I demand an outrageous amount and sit until they pay me, or until college starts. If someone like the Rangers, Milwaukee, Baltimore or Detroit draft me I sign right away, as they'll pay fairly and I have a chance with an ownership and FO that wants to compete.

And when you tear up your knee or you find out you really can't hit a college-level curveball you'll be changing flat tires at Firestone for the rest of your life, broke and wishing you had that $2 million signing bonus in the bank.

See if it was me, I'd be making sure I recieve my degree. As for the Marlins, they will never pay that kind of signing bonus -- guess you haven't heard. Loria is saving his $$$$ until we get a stadium. I imagine next year he'll trade away the # 1 or # 2 pick so he doesn't have to pay a top pick signing bonus.

Their you go.... shows how much you know, baseball draft picks cant be traded. :plain
May 23, 200620 yr Marlins always have paid the right signing bonus in relation to where the player has been drafted. They have rarely, if ever, scoffed at giving a fair and usually correct signing bonus to a good prospect. You, are once again, wrong.
May 23, 200620 yr Shoot Ralph, you beat me to it. Last season Volstad signed for $1.6 million. And HR27 is correct in that the Marlins have always paid what was the appropriate $$$ for the draft position.
May 23, 200620 yr Can't we all just ignore this moron? Doesn't everyone realize he is starved for attention and loves when people respond to him? I've stopped reading his posts...I highly recommend it. :thumbup
May 24, 200620 yr I can certainly understand the logic behind a player being drafted this year not wanting to play for the Marlins. I mean, what player would ACTUALLY WANT to be drafted by a team poised to contend for the World Series again in 2008-09? I mean, that's even around the time they could be ready for the big leagues. PERISH THE THOUGHT.

May 24, 200620 yr most prospects are only concerned with the money they will make and the opportunity to get to the show. sure they would love to play for certain organizations, but only the true prima donnas wouldnt sign simply because of the organization it is. most doods drafted are going to be thrilled to be a pro and as long as not insulted with money are going to be signing. not really any issue, though some want to make it into one when it doesnt exist.
June 17, 200620 yr What if..... Heywood - what do you say now??? :whistle i cant wait for him to answer that
