....the 1st pick refuses to sign with the Marlins like JD Drew did a few years ago ? What if our organization is considered so bad we can't even get the 2nd and 3rd rounder to sign ? Should we only draft Sr college players to make sure they sign ?

(but even that didn't work with Drew)

What if...we never had another post like this one?...would never happen this world is so unjust!

Congratulations sir, you should be very honored...you have won...THE WORST POST OF THE MONTH !

:thumbup :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup Don't celebrate too hard tonight ! Good job buddy, it was tough, I know...but this was an easy selection.

Why is it the worst post of the month ? Its a distinct possiblity. The Marlins Organization doesn't exactly have the most stellar reputation right now. If I was an draftable player I would avoid the Marlins like they were the plague....not return calls and brush off any rep of the team. There is no chance of getting paid real $$$ until your arbitration year.

Until the ownership of this team is out of Loria's hands and in the pocket of someone with enough money, we're going to be bad-mouthed around baseball and considered the worst organization in baseball.

did we actually select JD Drew?

The Marlins would select a player they KNOW will sign with them, who has at least given them a verbal commitment, I'm sure.

It's not the worst post of the year. Not even in the top...or should I say low 1000, in stupid posts. But I don't think signing draft picks will be a problem. As long as the Marlins are prepared to pay the proper signing bonus, which I assume they will, the draftees will sign. The state of the franchise and/or ownership is irrelevant. These players know the deal, and they know it's likely they'll be traded somewhere within 5 years no matter who drafts them. The head cases like Drew are the exception to the rule.

look at the past drafts the marlins select people that they know they can sign or are that much better than everyone else

Good signing bonuses to top draft picks have never been a problem for this organization. And most players dont see a good pay day until they reach arbitration, unless their arby years are totally bought out which isnt that common. So I dont really get your point.

At this time, players might be thinking they have a good shot at advancing quickly through the minors and making it to the show faster with the Marlins organization.

In other words, I dont get the point of this post.

As mentioned above, the Marlins offer a quick route through.

The thing is if we don't think we can sign someone, we won't pick them:) I would imagine in 07 when we're picking near the top we'll take signability into account.

Even last year, we would have taken Hansen, but the deal we discussed with his agent was rejected on their part.

So to sum up, the way baseball works, we can negotiate in advance:)

The only thing that might happen is that we pass on a more talented player to sign one who will ask for less, but thats something that happens every year with lots of teams.

Hmm...I wonder if we could of gotten Hansen and Volstad both last year. Kind of irrelevant now, but I just dont remember if Volstad was well thought of by other teams.

That was the plan, and Hansen was still on the board when we took Thompson at 22 so we could have had them both. We just were not prepared to take Hansen without a contract agreement already in place.

I actually think it worked out for the best, Thompson is really starting to come on well now, and I don't think Hansen would have made the difference last year. Hansen isnt adjusting quite as quickly as thought, and with the way our offense hit with risp in 2005, we weren't going far anyway.

Of course OF Jacoby Ellsbury was also still on the board at 22 as well, but thats a different argument for another thread:)

I guess y'all know better but I am just afraid of a wasted year if we don't get someone drafted that can play for us. Look at Allison -- couldn't we have had Conor Jackson instead ? Why is this organization so reluctant to pick a fielding position as opposed to all those pitchers ? You can have all the pitching you want if you don't score runs they won't win.

if a team is bad it just means a better chance that they can get up to the majors faster :)

At the time, Allison falling to their spot in the draft took them by suprise, and they had to jump on it.

I have no problem drafting pitching, since a good portion of the positions have their long time heirs it seems, and a few more are just getting development in a learning condusive environment before they come up.

What seems to be the problem this year? Scoring runs or pitching?

OH, the benefit of hindsight! Take a look at the stats and forgot Allison's drug problem. Allison was easily and OBVIOUSLY the better pick. His HS numbers are amazing and if he was completely healthy and drug free, he would easily be the #1 prospect in OUR stacked system. So easy to look back after he had problems, but at the time that pick HAD to be made.

oh my god man, this post is worse than the crap that i come up with, and that's sad. Do you really want to be lower on the scale than the chickenman?

Unfortunately this draft class sucks pretty bad...not realistic but it'd be cool if we drafted some South Florida, home-grown talent more often (like the Braves do). For example, pitcher Matt Latos out of Coconut Creek high school. Kid throws 97!

How about that Marrero kid from Pace ? I know he's signed a LOI with the Hurricanes, but he's a sure 1st rounder....do we have a shot at him falling to us ?

This poster sucks :thumbdown

Our hitting has been solid this year. Our pitching is terrible. Or can you not see past your irrational hatred of Loria and see the truth of the matter?

What did the White Sox have last year that helped them win? Great pitching. Hmmm...

Its not irrational, I just dislike a man who has ruined the Marlins, and possibly crippled the franchise now from getting any kind of help.

FA's will avoid us like the plague. We only got Borchard because he was a reject -- 3 teams in like 3 or 4 months. I'm telling you know, kids will wince when the Marlins take them, because they know it means they'll never have the chance to get the big $$$ and they'll never win a championship. 2003 fell into Loria's lap - Dombrowski was responsible for that, and everyone knows it. He was the one that traded, signed and drafted for and saw the futures of Lee, Castillo, Gonzalez, Lowell, and Beckett, not Beinfest.

Who is worse, Loria or Huizenga?
