The Marlins got a much-needed sweep of the Cubs as they opened a nine-game homestand, which gets tougher with the Friday arrival of the National League East-leading Mets.

The series win against the Cubs was a welcome respite for the Marlins after dropping seven straight on the road. First-year manager Joe Girardi said that there have been some growing pains for the team, but the necessary adjustments are being made to get all the young Marlins where he wants them to be.

"You watch how people go about their business, what seems to motivate them, and you tailor your approach to that," Girardi said.

Girardi also said that while the Marlins' struggles so far this season have been difficult, it's a part in the process of developing a young team.

"You're going to go through a lot of different things, a lot of frustrating times over the course of the season," Girardi said.

The Marlins will be faced with a formidable task in the series opener Friday when they go up against Pedro Martinez, who has not lost yet this season, though he hasn't gotten a win in May.

Martinez will be matched up against Florida's Josh Johnson, who is 2-0 since moving to the starting rotation.

The two teams met earlier this season for a three-game set, one of which was postponed due to rain. The Mets won both meetings at Shea Stadium.

Pitching matchup

NYM: RHP Pedro Martinez (5-0, 2.82 ERA)

Martinez pitched seven shutout innings in his last start but took a no-decision, his fourth straight, when the Yankees came from behind to get the win.

FLA: RHP Josh Johnson (3-2, 2.62 ERA)

Johnson has looked strong since moving from the bullpen to the Marlins' starting rotation. The righty went 6 2/3 innings with two runs on five hits for a no-decision in his last start against the Devil Rays.

Player to watch

Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado batted .500 with four hits in a series against his former team earlier this season.

Nice! I had them for the series against the Cubs...

I would go out to the game if I was sure it wasn't going to rain and be delayed. :whistle

Me too. I have two tickets in section 101, but I am pretty sure it is going to rain. Oh well.

David Wright out with back spasms.

Interesting no Wright in the lineup for the Mets.
