June 27, 200620 yr http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-hea...la-sports-front Anderson deadline met, Posey's now re-set By Ira Winderman South Florida Sun-Sentinel Posted June 27 2006 The Heat confirmed Monday that backup guard Derek Anderson met his deadline to opt into the remaining $2.5 million 2006-07 season on his contract. It also now finds itself with additional time to deal with the potential free agency of forward James Posey. Agent Mark Bartelstein said Monday that today's deadline for Posey's 2006-07 opt-in has been shifted to Friday, instead of the previous deadline of 24 hours before Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. NBA Draft. Considering Posey's strong play during the Heat's championship run, many in the league expect the valued sixth-man to opt out of his $6.4 million for next season, if for no other reason than to gain a long-term deal from the Heat. The free-agent negotiation period opens Saturday, although free-agent contracts cannot be signed until July 11. Anderson, 31, could yet pursue a buyout or the Heat could use his contract in a trade. Anderson started three games after being acquired from the Rockets at midseason, averaging 20.2 minutes in 23 appearances. But he appeared in only eight of the Heat's 23 playoff games, for 66 minutes.
June 27, 200620 yr Gotta bring Posey back. I expected him to test FA to drive up his price ala Damon Jones last year. Riles will get it done.
June 27, 200620 yr i think the heat would do very well to keep both these guys...i know every roster needs some change, but i love posey's defense and anderson always seemed to play well when he got some time...plus he would be a valuable back up for the couple games wade is bound to miss from time to time
June 27, 200620 yr I like Posey, and I wouldn't have a problem with them signing him long term at 5-6 mil per year, but I don't think he can reasonably ask for more than that, and I'm not sure there's any team that would be willing to pay him more than the Heat. He's a good fit here, where he's not being asked to score points. On most other teams, his lack of offense probably becomes a liability. We need his D and his 3 pt shot. Anderson, whatever. He blows. He shot below 31% during his tenure here, and he hasn't broken 40% since the 2002-2003 season. His defense is nothing special, nor is his team game. You ask me, he shouldn't even be in the league. If there's anything we can do to avoid paying him to be on our roster, we should do that.
June 30, 200620 yr MIAMI ? (AP) ? The Miami Heat picked up reserve guard Jason Kapono's $1.1 million contract for next season Friday, one day before he would have become a free agent. Kapono averaged 4.1 points in 51 games last season for the Heat, making two starts. He appeared in one postseason game during Miami's run to the NBA championship. "We will definitely keep Jason,'' Heat coach Pat Riley said Friday. "I don't think there's a better 3-point shooter in the game.'' Riley said a number of teams inquired about Kapono's availability earlier this week, when the Heat were trying to obtain a pick in Wednesday's draft. solid keep...now heat fans await the word on James Posey
June 30, 200620 yr i hope kapono gets some more time because damn he can flat out shoot the rock...i want to see more wright, barron, and simien next year too
July 1, 200620 yr MIAMI -- Preferring the status quo of his role on a championship team over potential greater riches on the free agent market, forward James Posey opted to remain with the Heat next season for the $6.4 million remaining on his contract. Posey had a Friday deadline for his decision. Had he not informed the Heat by the deadline, he would have become an unrestricted free agent Saturday. The decision makes it more likely the Heat will retain the core the produced the franchise's first NBA championship, with Posey having played a critical role in the postseason as a high-energy sixth-man. Posey will become a free agent following the 2006-07 season, unless he agrees to an extension. He was acquired along with point guard Jason Williams in last summer's trade that sent guard Eddie Jones to Memphis. Earlier Friday, coach Pat Riley confirmed the Heat had picked up the $1.1 million conditional guarantee on the contract of guard Jason Kapono for next season. "I don't think there's a better 3-point shooter in the game," Riley said of the 25-year-old acquired from Charlotte on the eve of camp last fall. "He got caught up in the numbers game with us this year. There was tremendous interest in teams wanting to acquire him for draft picks." In addition, the Heat has received several commitments for the summer camp it will stage next week at AmericanAirlines Arena before heading to Orlando for a July 10-14 summer league at the Magic's training facility. Confirmed Friday for its workouts were undrafted West Virginia players Kevin Pittsnogle and Mike Gansey, University of Miami guard Robert Hite, Notre Dame point guard Chris Quinn, Minnesota guard Vincent Grier, Michigan guard Daniel Horton and journeyman NBA guard Tierre Brown.
July 1, 200620 yr ESPN - ESPN's Sportscenter is reporting that the Toronto Raptors will swap Charlie Villanueva to the Milwaukee Bucks for T.J. Ford and cash considerations. Bucks General Manager Admin Harris has confirmed the deal, which was posted on the Bucks website. ?The hard part of any trade is having to give up something in return,? Harris said. ?T.J. is a talented, young athlete who gave his all to this organization for three years, both on and off the court. He was an inspiration to all of us when he found the will and strength to fight back from the neck injury he suffered during his rookie season. Many people thought he would never play basketball again, but he thrived in the face of adversity and now has the promise of a long NBA career ahead of him. We wish him much success in Toronto.? The trade will give the Bucks a formidable frontcourt with last year's first overall selection Andrew Bogut and Villanueva, while the Raptors fill their biggest hole at point guard. http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives...ed_for_tj_ford/
July 1, 200620 yr Really really interesting. Raptors are now very intriguing. PG-Ford SG-Peterson/Graham SF-Bargnani PF-Bosh C-Rasho Solid and young starting 5. Built really well around the budding superstar in Bosh. They get a very good player in Ford but are taking a huge risk that CV is going to be the same as Bargnani. Bucks also play CV at his natural PF and move Bogut C and either trade or let Magloire walk. They must really trust Mo Williams as a PG.
July 1, 200620 yr Really really interesting. Raptors are now very intriguing. PG-Ford SG-Peterson/Graham SF-Bargnani PF-Bosh C-Rasho For the future, they are intriguing. Right now? They are still a 20 win team. That's a BAD team next year. Period.

July 1, 200620 yr Melo staying in Denver, says he'll accept contract offer By Marc Stein ESPN.com The first player of the offseason to make a verbal commitment on signing a new contract is Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony. The Nuggets formally offered Anthony a five-year maximum contract extension worth an estimated $80 million on Saturday morning and Anthony didn't hesitate to accept. "We've informed the Nuggets that we intend to sign on July 12," Calvin Andrews, Anthony's agent, told ESPN.com. "Carmelo is very, very grateful for the commitment [owner Stan Kroenke] has made to him. "Carmelo's fondness for the city of Denver, his relationship with the organization ... the thought of going elsewhere never entered his thinking." Teams were allowed to extend offers to free agents as of 12:01 a.m. ET Saturday morning, but deals can't advance past the stage of verbal agreement until July 12. That's the day when the NBA is scheduled to announce the new salary cap for the 2006-07 season, clearing teams to make signings and trades official. Anthony Anthony is expected to formally sign with the Nuggets at a July 12 news conference. He'll earn $4.7 million next season in the final year of his rookie contract before the extension kicks in the 2007-08 season, with the exact amount of the extension to be determined when the salary cap is established for that season. The 22-year-old has averaged 22.8 points per game in his first three seasons, leading the Nuggets to playoffs in all three, and averaged 26.5 points last season to rank eighth in the league in scoring. The other top players from Anthony's draft class -- Cleveland's LeBron James, Toronto's Chris Bosh and NBA Finals MVP Dwyane Wade of Miami -- were offered similar extensions in the early hours of Saturday and are also expected to sign their extensions this month. If any of those players do chose to pass on an extension this offseason, they'd still have to wait two years -- until the summer of 2008 -- to have the ability to sign elsewhere via unrestricted free agency. Fears in Denver that the Nuggets' rocky season and subsequent collapse in the playoffs would dissuade Anthony from making a long-term commitment to the club proved unfounded. "That's over with," Anthony said Saturday in an appearance on ESPNEWS. He also expressed hope that Nuggets coach George Karl and forward Kenyon Martin can mend their well-chronicled rift. Martin was suspended for the rest of the playoffs after a blowup with Karl in Game 2 of Denver's first-round series with the Los Angeles Clippers. The Nuggets, according to NBA front-office sources, have aggressively shopped Martin in trade talks since the departure of general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, who was close with Anthony and Martin after bringing them both to Denver. "I wish I could tell you, man," Anthony said when asked what it would take to heal the Karl-Martin relationship. "Them two guys, they're two different guys. Hopefully they can sit down and work it out, and if not we've got to move on and continue with the Denver Nuggets."
July 2, 200620 yr Now D-Wade's turn to re-sign with the world champs Miami Heat. he's a FA? Next year he would be. And can anybody tell me what Melo has done to warrant an 80 million dollar contract? I can understand Lebron and D-Wade, but Melo?
