July 23, 200619 yr Alou 97 (150 games): .292 AVG, .373 OBP, .493 SLG Floyd 01 (149 games): .390 AVG, .578 OBP, .321 SLG Did you just make up numbers? No way in hell Cliff Floyd ever hit .390 with a OBP of almost .600. I remember he had a damn good year in 2001 but that can't be right. It's also tough to compare. Alou lead the team in RBIs in 1997 and that was before the juice ball era that Floyd was playing in. God damnit, you're right. I copied it wrong. But its still better than Alou's 97 year. .317 BA, .390 OBP, .578 SLG.
July 23, 200619 yr Guys, he asked who THE greatest Marlin is, not the best player at each position. Miguel Cabrera

He also played a lot of CF that year because I think Devo was hurting. Yeah, 103 RBIs for Floyd in 01.
July 23, 200619 yr Ok guys, then should this be our official best position players: C- Ivan Rodriguez 1B- Carlos Delgado 2B- Luis Castillo 3B- Mike Lowell SS- Edgar Renteria LF- Cliff Floyd CF- Juan Pierre RF- Gary Sheffield SP- Kevin Brown RP- Armando Benitez M- Jack McKeon
July 23, 200619 yr No Marlins player ever will contribute more than Bryan Harvey in 1993. An ERA of 1.70, saving 45 of the team's 64 victories, that's an almost unfathomable 70% of their victories coming with Harvey closing them out, all with familial backstory that would break your heart. edit: Oops, originally posted as 2003 instead of 1993. My bad.

Awful means of comparison. Benitez saved 47 games two years ago, so just because we won more games that means his contribution wasn't as important? Come on. A closer can only save as many games as his team allows.
July 23, 200619 yr I think you meant 1993 Marlins2003. Bryan Harvey may have not had the numbers but he was the most automatic closer outside of Mo Rivera that I remember seeing or reading about.
July 23, 200619 yr Ahhh, thanks Beinfest...typo...fixing it now. BTW, great game tonight, I'm marveling about how good Nolasco looked tonight. It's almost beyond belief the Cubs let him go.

July 23, 200619 yr Benitez > Harvey Saves and ERA ERA is such a bad stat to judge bullpen guys by. Actually saves are too. Its a better idea to look at save percentage because Bryan Harvey didn't have too many oppurtunities for saves in 93.
July 23, 200619 yr Benitez > Harvey Saves and ERA Not even close. I don't think another closer will ever duplicate Harvey's delivery of 70% of the wins for a team in one season. You really can't compare Harvey's performance with the fledgling 1993 Marlins to Beinitez' (and I love and respect the guy and major props for the job he did here) with a team behind him fresh off their world series victory. I'm not trying to be argumentative but I realize a lot of the people here never saw the 1993 season or the pathetic band of players who populated the roster that season. For every Jeff Conine there was a Junior Felix, it was just an awful team. For every young and unskilled Trevor Hoffman, future hall of famer, there was Joe Klink and Richie Lewis. As bad as pundits promised this 2006 team would be, even when they were 11-31, they were never as bad as the 1993 Marlins. Without Harvey coming out of the pen night after night, teaching the team what it meant and how to win, that team would have been lucky to win 35-40 games. I know because I sat through about 75 of their 81 games that season. It was awful.
July 23, 200619 yr Conine is the most respected Marlins in history. Santana or Kevin Brown are one of the top Marlins pitcher out there and Gary Sheffield was real good for a hitter. Santana isnt considered a Marlin wat santana was a marlin?
July 23, 200619 yr I'm too lazy to look up the numbers but Alou's 1997 was probably better than any season had by Conine or Floyd. Bingo!! He was the real '97 WS MVP, hands down. Still miss the stadium announcer introducing him. Aloooouuuuuu!!!! And Sheff played 2 different positions for the team. Started out at 3B and then cried all the way out to RF where he stayed. Remember the guys in section 130 wearing chef's hats with the sign "Sheff's Field"???? He wouldn't make my team. Don't much care for whinney racists. And DTrain the best SP ever?? Not even close. Hard to pick one there but I would most likely go with Kevin Brown. Pre injured Alex Rodriguez would be near the top also. My favorite would have to go to Uncle Charlie. Has nothing to do with his numbers. I just really liked him. Closer is way too close to call. I would just take every closer we had and they would be my pen.

You brought back some long forgotten names. Scott Pose, Bret Barberie, Dave Magadan, Walt Weiss. How about Nigel Wilson?? I believe Orestes Destarde was playing in Japan in '92. Probably the best player on that team was Benito Santiago. But the question was the best Marlin of all time. My vote goes to #5 Carl Barger.
July 23, 200619 yr It would have to be Luis Castillo. Three gold gloves, two stolen base titles, 35 game hitting streak. Luis is the Marlins career leader in games, runs, hits, singles, triples, walks, at bats, stolen bases and sacrifice hits. Hell with very little pop in his bat he's third all-time in total bases and eighth in extra base hits.

July 23, 200619 yr Kevin Brown ERA: 1996: 1.89 1997: 2.69 D-Train ERA: 2005: 2.62 Brown > Willis But Dontrelle has the most wins as a Marlin.
July 23, 200619 yr Here is a list of the best Marlins player in their position: C - Ivan Rodriguez 1B - Delgado/ D. Lee 2B - Luis Castillo 3B - Mike Lowell SS - Engar Renteria LF - Miguel Cabrera CF - Juan Pierre RF - Gary Sheffield SP - Kevin Brown RP - Nen :lol ...i'll change this...
July 24, 200619 yr greatest players while in florida or just greatest that have ever put on a marlin uniform?
July 24, 200619 yr C - Ivan Rodriguez 1B - Delgado 2B - Luis Castillo 3B - Mike Lowell SS - Engar Renteria LF - Gary Sheffield CF - Preston Wilson RF - Jeff Conine SP - Kevin Brown RP - Nen M - Jack McKeon Any complaints? You could argue that Juan Pierre was better overall than Preston Wilson. Lets not forget that PW was a gigantic strikeout machine. Not bashing him because I liked the guy and he hit some monster bombs but Im just saying it could be argued.
