First off should the marlins go get him....

and which marlins were put on waivers?

I believe that Cabrera and Willis may have been put there, so that teams would stop asking about them. But I don't know.

It's $18 million through 2007...hard to believe Jeffrey Loria would swallow that even with his love of winning, but damn that sure would fix centerfield wouldn't it !

I read the other day that it's standard policy for every player to be put on waivers, for whatever reason, each year. Beinfest chose to put Miggy and Dontrelle on waivers just a couple of days before the trade deadline, because I believe they are untouchable for 72 hours after that. This is just a technicality. I doubt the Braves let him go.

we could claim him, so they have to trade with us or nobody.

I would do it.

Teams claim 100's of players a year.... it doesnt mean we would get him but you are right, if we claim him its the Fish or nobody, it would prevent any other team from gett Jones..

What they were saying on BBTN was he's on the cusp (as in a few games) of becoming a 10/5 player...hmmm...if we were (hypothetically) to acquire him before he becomes a 10/5 year player, as I understand it, that goes out the window and we would be able to trade him in the off-season.

you are correct.

once he becomes a 10/5 player he can veto any trade he wants.

The idea of Jones and Cabrera back to back...I know...I know...it's just a fantasy but heck, why not?

If it's true he cleared waivers, you have to know Loria has to be at least thinking about it. And I doubt $$$ would be the issue.

are you serious!?!?!

but.................why would they do that?

Put him on waivers i mean.

He's making $13 million this season and $13.5 million next. Once he becomes a 10/5 player he can veto any trade, which essentially makes him untradeable, or at the very least, makes trading him much, much more difficult.

What are you talking about?

Wow Cabrera - Jones does sound too good to be true. Any chance of this happening?

Assuming we have a stadium deal in place, he's a FA after the 2007 season, so who knows, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Again, just enjoying the fantasy for a moment. Faced with $18 million the rest of this season and next, and an untradeable 10/5 player, I would assume something like this - Marlins acquire Jones and $2 million for fillintheblank, the Marlins assume his contract obligation, he plays out 2006 and the Fish move him in the off-season perhaps contributing the same $2 million making him more marketable, in 2007. The Braves have jettisoned a ton of dough, Langerhans slides into center, the team rebuilds around youth...the circle is complete.

Unbelievable...ESPN has LA winning 3-0, Yahoo has Cincy winning 4-3

Yahoo correx... LA did win 3-0...Marlins 4 games out.

I'm an adult. I know I should let go of this.

I know it's a fantasy. The chances are one in a million (or 18 million) but I keep looking at the standings and if the Braves are forced to stick anywhere near their $80 million payroll in 2007 with the Liberty deal a reasonable possibility, the last thing they need is a 10/5 player handcuffing their moves.

And unless you think the Nationals, Cubs or Pirates would want to take on his salary, the Marlins are sitting right above the Braves in the NL standings and can block any deal the Braves want to make.

These are the things dreams are made of.

In reality though, what are the odds of the Marlins actually going through with this.

Is it as far fetched as you make it sound?

I'm not going to comment, because getting Hollywood would be amazing. I just doubt it would happen.

I think the biggest obstacle would be the Braves trading him to a team in the division. I don't see them doing that, I'd think they'd rather hang onto his soon to be tougher to trade contract than deal him to a division rival... but it would be awesome.

It all depends on a couple of things.

How badly will the Braves want to not be saddled with him and what will turn into a no trade $18 million (left) contract as TimeWarner (owners) try to sell the team to Liberty Media (which is run by uber-tough guy John Malone)?

And just as importantly, if given the opportunity, will Jeffrey Loria make the financial commitment/

The former, I just don't know. But the AJC doesn't see payroll rising in 2007.

Of the latter I would bet he would.

Almost every player in baseball is put on waivers this time of year. It just lets teams know who you can trade (or trade for) or who you can't.

The fact that he cleared waivers is news, the fact he was on them is not.
