September 4, 200620 yr I was disputing TheDon's claim that Treanor was a downgrade defensively from Olivo. I said it could be argued that Treanor was a "slight" defensive downgrade to Olivo Olive has a much better arm/much quiker Treanor does a much better job holding onto/stopping balls
September 4, 200620 yr And TheDon, alot of people agree that Olivos defense leaves alot to be desired, and his defense is nowhere near where it should be after playing the position for so long. Never heard anyone argue, as you do, that he is a good defensive catcher. Mainly because he is not. I said it could be argued that Treanor was a "slight" defensive downgrade to Olivo Lets face it, when you bring Treanor in its a slight defensive downgrade No you didn't, you stated matter of factly that Olivo is a superior defensive catcher when he is, in fact, not. As for throwing out base runners, Treanor even has a higher success rate at doing that, which is the only thing Olivo is good at behind the plate.

Olivo's quickness allows him to do a very good job covering bunts and little nubblers in front of the plate. He has problems blocking balls but is good doing everythign else.
September 4, 200620 yr They should give him a rest more often. At least they can do it when Olsen or D-Train is pitching. If it is against a lefty pitcher and we feel we need his bat, they could always start/play him at first too, I imagine that, at least if just for a few innings, would be easier on him than catching. We need him to be as fresh as possible down the stretch.

News flash: Im not going to get involved in an Olivo debate with the President of the Miguel Olivo Hate Club Feel free to argue with yourself if you'd like.
September 4, 200620 yr I was really surprised to see Olivo in today. Two reasons: it's a daygame, and a lefty's pitching. A perfecto day for olivo to take a day off. one of the few moves I criticize girardi for. btw Shaq-Man, nice to see you changed your sig... Olivo has asked Girardi to play reminds me of Grady Little sticking with Pedro (you know when) :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain :plain
September 4, 200620 yr Treanor should be out of the line-up as long as possible, give Olivo a Red Bull or Bawls or whatever cause we need him now, we can't rely on conserving him for later.

September 4, 200620 yr Trully understandable. No need to keep him in there, we can start Treaner for the next couple of games and give him nice pinch hit opportunities after one full day of rest to keep him from rusting. He is human, and we are use to this (see Paul LoDuca.) We need to get Treaner in there period, or if you guys prefer, move Willingham back to Catcher, but I wouldn't do it. Joe needs to make the call, and fast. Olivo has an arm, and has grand quickness unheard about in most or even all catchers. Not only that, he can produce offensively. So he is in a minor slump, it happens. Give him a couple of days off than tell us what to do with Olivo.

September 4, 200620 yr Your act is getting old spike. You're one of those fans who would rather be right and have the team do worse than be wrong and have the team do better. We seem to have quite a few of those around here.

I meant people like you.. those who would rather be stubborn to death about a player and never admit they are wrong.. and who, most likely, root against that player in hoping they fail so they can prove their point.

No I am just not going to overrated a journeyman catcher with overall bad defense and is having his first decent statistical season at the plate. I dont want to resign a catcher, espicially long term, who has proven to regress after any success with the bat from season to season. I am also worried about his glove, as he has caught for the majority, if not all of his career, and besides the arm stregnth he is still below average in the necessary defensive skills a catcher should require. And most of all, his salary will jump into 7 figures in arbitration, a high price to pay for a guy who will still play bad defense and could very well likely be having a season that is an anomoly at the plate.
September 4, 200620 yr But will Olivo be worth it? My guess is not likely. Espicially since he's never been worth it before and isn't even this season.
September 4, 200620 yr Are there any catchers they can bring up in sept to help? Is Hoover still on the 40 man? I know these are far from saviors but an extra day off a week might help.

Oh, I misunderstood your post. I thought you meant he wasn't worth his salary this year.
