Henry Owens should be the new closer

Featured Replies

Owens should seriously be the closer. Hes looked damn good everytime Ive seen him pitch and Julio is a joke. I live in NY and I saw him pitch a lot with the Mets so I knew this was going to be a bad deal. I seriously get scared when he comes out to pitch.

Owens or Gardner both have a closers mentality. Call me crazy but I think Julio is better as a setup man.

7 hits and 3 bb in 2.1 innings wouldn't qualify him for even mop-up man

I guess he can throw BP

Julio makes me wish we had Herges

Julio might not close any game for us but what to do with him he cost us a trade is not like we can trade him now. no one smart enough will want him

I just hope the Marlins don't feel they have to justify the Julio trade and no matter how much he sucks Fredi keeps on putting him in when there's a save on the line and the Marlins let a win slip away. :confused

If they have to play Julio, I hope it's in situations like last night when he has a 5 run lead. No way in hell would I trust him in an actual save situation.

i think julio has is going to improve (he's a career 4-5 ERA guy, you can't write him off on a couple of innings no matter how awful) but there's no way fredi can put him out there in a close game at the moment - i'd be happy with owens.

of course there's no reason you have to automatically put your best reliever out there in the 9th - as far as i'm concerned, pinto deserves the real "save" for last night for protecting the 6-3 lead in the 7th by striking out the top of the order.

There is no where for Julio to go but up. He can't get a high school player out right now let alone anyone in the majors

Another appearance or 2 like his first few he will go to mop-up duty. Welcome to Henry Owens as our new closer. Strange but we could have had that without giving up Petit...So lets hope Julio finds the strikezone, Even if Julio starts pitching well Owens should be granted the closer role, he has been lights out!

The Marlins should just so score so many runs that they don't need a closer  Just Kidding

Actually Julio has the closer experience, but obviously needs to get some work in before he gets a call to close again.

Until he can his shtuff together I would use Owens or Lindstrom.

Again, I'm not defending him because my heart was in my stomach last night like everyone else there, but the more Kranitz sees him, PERHAPS he's closer to finding a solution to what's wrong. (I did notice last night he wasn't featuring his fastball as much which may have had something to do with Kranitz' influence but I'm just guessing there.)

I still don't believe it's ability, its one of three things or a combination of, mechanics, it's mental or an injury. All three can be addressed. Some easier than others.

If he doesn't work so out so be it, we let him go, move forward, I've already said that. I think it's better we made this move now than have acquired him in late July when there's a shrinking, competitive and ever so more expensive market. So right now there's less to lose (except $$$) but trying to fix him than later in the year. And I suspect money will be an irrelevancy when making the ultimate decision on the guy and what's best for the team if we remain as competitive as we have. The schedule for April and May offer both opportuity and danger for the Marlins and fixing Julio is a key ingredient to our continued success.

Glad to see we gave away Petit for Julio!

Herges did a really great job in the last couple months of last season. I still dont get all the hate.

What a turnaround from last year...I'm absolutely confident in every guy in our pen, EXCEPT Julio. Hopefully Julio gets the mop-up duty for a while, I'm not ready to write him off yet.

Lindstrom

Saw him throw live for the first time on Opening Night and he throws RIDICULOUS gas. I would be in favor of him getting a chance as well as Owens.

i saw lindstrom in spring training, ridiculous heat (i was sitting right above the fish bullpen) - not as confident in his control though.

Julio in 1/3 inning gave up 2 more hits and walked another batter...His ERA went down! 16.88 Wow he sure is our Francisco Rodriguez/Mariano Rivera. The yankees may want him now. How about AROD for Julio? :whistle

Slowly but stedily his ERA is going down, pretty soon his value will reach its peak point. :thumbup

Armando Benitez, NY Mets 2003. Mets fans will tell you he sucked that year, I'll tell you he had a rough April, then went on to have a good season. Relief pitchers are funny that way, a few bad outings and everyone thinks they suck. Julio is not getting the job done right now, that does not mean he will not get his act together.

See above.

We are far too much agreement on this one. And I just read over on the Marlins web site that the scouts have noticed a glitch in his delivery. Maybe that will help. Maybe not. We will see. Because of the amount of pitches he made Saturday and Sunday he gets an off day if needed on Monday. Fans will read into that one far too much. But if needed Tuesday he comes running out of the pen in the 9th again. I say keep working with him BUT keep him on that same short leash that Fredi used Sunday.

Since Bob mentioned it, for those who missed it on flamarlins.com, here's the comments he was talking about. All you haters will have a field day with this, you can thank melater for posting it... :D

Julio situation:

"Closer Jorge Julio had a difficult ninth inning Saturday, giving up two runs on two hits while throwing 31 pitches.

In his first three appearances, Julio has given up five runs on seven hits with three walks and no strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. On Wednesday at Washington, he wasn't able to convert the lone save chance he has had this season.

Of Julio's 67 pitches, 34 have been strikes.

Acquired from the Diamondbacks late in Spring Training, Julio has 99 career saves, but thus far he has struggled with throwing strikes.

"It's like last year; I started bad [then], too," Julio said.

He admits he was a bit frustrated by a couple of calls by home-plate umpire Gary Cederstrom.

Saturday was the first time Julio pitched at Dolphin Stadium, so he was going through an adjustment there. Plus, he is wanting to impress the Marlins.

"I want to show my best stuff now," he said.

Entering in a non-save situation isn't a factor, he adds.

"When you see the score like that, for me, it's the same," Julio said. "Save or no save, I work the same."

Gonzalez remains upbeat with his closer.

"[i'll] keep giving him the ball and keep running him out there," Gonzalez said. "I thought his pitches were down [saturday]. Obviously, the command, there is a question there. But I felt the quality of his pitches he threw yesterday were pretty good. I thought it was better than Washington.

"When I'm around him, I'm encouraging to him. He's our guy."

One scout detected a mechanical glitch with Julio, pointing out that he was crouching more out of the stretch. By being lower, it impacted his arm angle and ultimately the location of his pitches.

Julio's rough outing also affected the rest of the bullpen. Randy Messenger, who warmed up in the sixth and seventh innings, got up in the ninth as well. Even though Messenger didn't pitch, because he threw so much in the bullpen, his available Sunday is limited. "
