August 14, 200718 yr Marlins first-round pick Matt Dominguez still wants to turn pro, but with Wednesday's 11:59 p.m. deadline looming, the California prep third baseman remained in baseball limbo. "I'm pretty sure I want to sign," Dominguez, who signed to play at Cal State Fullerton, said Monday night. "But you have agents telling you some stuff and you want to listen to them." Dominguez said the Marlins have offered him close to the management-recommended slot figure of $1.62 million, but his camp took notice this week when the Braves gave prep outfielder Jason Heyward $1.7 million. Heyward went 14th overall, two picks behind Dominguez. "We're thinking a lot of other guys are going to sign for over slot," Dominguez said. "We've waited this long. Might as well wait a little longer." While Dominguez waits, the Marlins have agreed to terms with second-rounder Mike Stanton, a high school outfielder from Sherman Oaks, Calif. A Southern California recruit as a wide receiver/linebacker, Stanton will receive a $475,000 bonus spread over four years because of his multisport status. Third-rounder Jameson Smith, a catcher from Fresno (Calif.) Community College, signed for $310,000. If the Marlins fail to sign Dominguez by Wednesday's deadline, they would receive a compensation pick as high as 13th overall next June. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...0,4521284.story Good news we signed the 2nd and 3rd rounders it seems which is great to see Bad news is we are cheap, what else is new?

Cheap or just sound business sense? Why should the Marlins play over slot??? :mis2

August 14, 200718 yr not our fault that the Braves gave Heyward so much f***ing sign already "i just wanna play baseball".... he doesn't have the balls to go to college
August 14, 200718 yr not our fault that the Braves gave Heyward so much f***ing sign already "i just wanna play baseball".... he doesn't have the balls to go to college Amen... Is Uncle Gus negotiating from the can???
August 14, 200718 yr Bad news is we are cheap, what else is new? Instead of easily going to the "Marlins are so cheap" argument, why don't you get pissed at the Braves for paying above slot? They are taking an action that hurts the negotiating position of about 20-25 other teams. Paying above slot is a horrible practice because it allows players and agents to hold teams by the balls (Just ask Scott Boras). Boras and others can just threaten to accept nothing less than X amount, and really highly touted prospects can fall to good teams with huge payrolls because they're willing to screw every other team over and agree to the agent's demands. It defeats the whole purpose of a reverse-order draft if top 5 teams are able to nab top 5 prospects. Mind you, Atlanta's signing is a very mild version of this.
August 14, 200718 yr stupid Braves, wtf. For the fourth straight year, the Tigers are going to make a huge splash with an above-slot deal in the first round. After signing Justin Verlander (2004), Cameron Maybin (2005) and Andrew Miller (2006), Detroit is closing in on a reported $7.7 million major league contract with New Jersey high school righthander Rick Porcello, the 27th overall pick. That deal would represent the highest guarantee ever given to a prep draftee signing with the club that selected him, surpassing the $7 million Josh Beckett received as the No. 2 overall pick in 1999.
August 14, 200718 yr Guys do not worry about Dominguez. He has a contract that have worked out and was suppose to sign, however now that all these big numbers are coming out--Dominguez wants more cash. Not big amount-- hear its about 75,000-100,000 He should be signed late tonight or early tommorrow

August 14, 200718 yr Well it seems that Florida does not mind throwing a little more cash out then usual. Also just heard from a source of mine that the Marlins are TALKING--just TALKING to a name that everyone thought we would not get.

Its has to be either Taiwan Easterling(FSuU) /Kellen St. Luce(Vandy) / Charley Williams (Troy) Hey Tycharles01 have you heard anything regarding Skyler Crawford and Mike McCravey? I have heard we have interest in signing both
August 14, 200718 yr How are the Marlins cheap when they paid above slot for their 2nd and 3rd picks? This deal for Dominguez will get made, so what's the deal with Easterling? Is he gonna sign I thought he was definetly going to college.
August 14, 200718 yr Considering we just saved 800K on By Kim and are the most profitable team in the majors, you would think we would invest some of the money on our farm system. That is where you get the bargains from.

August 14, 200718 yr How the hell does the 27th pick get $7.7 mil? That's out of control. Boras is amazing, he plugs it out there that his player is going to demand $8 mil to sign, watches him slide all the way down to 27th and still get paid.
August 14, 200718 yr The reason he fell to 27th is because he was going to be too expensive for a lot of teams.
August 15, 200718 yr It looks like an error, but the article below about Aumont on mlb.com mentions us signing Dominguez for 1.7 million on monday. It also calls him a pitcher though, so like I said it might be an error. mlb.com article
August 15, 200718 yr Ok, here is the latest from mlb.com's Jonathan Mayo...Here's reason number one not to write, even in a blog, an unconfirmed report about a signing. Seems that Dominguez is not a done deal with the Marlins, not at $1.7 mil and not at any figure, from what I'm told by someone close to the negotiations. My guess is something gets done there, and very soon, but no one has signed on the dotted line as of yet...
August 15, 200718 yr Update!! Matt Dominguez will be get a contract between 1.7 and 1.74 mil The player they are talking to is Taiwan Easterling(Sorry I could not say before, source did not want it to get out till tonight) The reason they are talking is because the Marlins have few more dollars then they thought and since he is a 2 sport player they can break is salary up over 5 yrs Also I heard last week that they were talking about signing atleast 1 or 2 more players from the draft class. No clue about Luce?? Last I heard was he wanted ALOT ALOT more than the Marlins were offering. One guy was McCravey tho, supposedly they have taken a liken to him. Seems he messed up his arm early in the year and the Marlins worked him last week to see how he looked?? But he is a big lefty and we know that MLB teams do like Big Lefties They also made a nice offer to Virgil Hill(25,000 more than slot) but he has elected to go to school
