Anyone else get the feeling that this OB idea is our last hope for a stadium? I mean, if this falls through and doesn't work out, I have a strong belief that Loria will take his business elsewhere.

Parking Structures will have to be built on-site. I would fully expect a parking garage, possibly 2 of them. The city could also use some downtown lots and have a bus running a circulator from the garages to the ballpark.

I hope they either extend the metro rail there or have shuttles that go from the vizcaya stop straight to the orange bowl.

 

Vizcaya is not the closest MetroRail station. Back in the day when I went to Dolphins games at the OB, MetroBus would run shuttles from the Civic Center station.

Yeah, the 2 closest stations are Civic Center and Culmer. I think buses currently run from Culmer for Canes games.

 

Depending where theyd put the stadium, the walk to Civic Center is not bad at all (in terms of time and safety)

I think a perfect counter to this is to look at Coor's Field in Denver. It was build in an industrial part of Northern Denver, quite close to Five Points, the worst part of Denver in terms of crime. Heading to "LoDo" now you would have no idea. The area quickly became classy, clean, and great for the economy of the city.

chase field would be a horrible design - since it's closed up so much it's designed to be primarily a dome where they can keep the sun out and AC up - there is little natural light in there - even when the roof is open they also open up a couple panels behind the outfield - really no sightlines though

 

i think a design like safeco could work as it can shelter from the rain while still providing a great view and open air environment

 

also, the area by the ballpark is downtown - it's not classy by any means - downtown phx is a dead zone - just some office buildings and really no life - they have a little plaza inbetween the basketball arena and baseball field - some parking garages in use for both buildings and then lots scattered throughout the area

What's wrong with the OB location? I have been to a ton of Canes games there. The people who own the homes in the area seem nice, especially when you're dropping $$ to park and party in their front lawn. As mentioned before by someone, if you know Miami a little bit it is easy to get out of the area without waiting in traffic for to long. As a Phillies fan it is in my best interest to see you guys stay put, so I can see my team play when they come to town.

 

I really liked the foresight and imagery you you guys have used by superimposing images on the map to show exactly what you are talking about.

 

Can retractable roofs withstand Hurricane winds? Or would you keep the roof open in that event?

Something would have to meet half-way between the two, like Chase Field's general design with the ability to lower the seaward wall so that it would give the crowd the skyline view. Safeco is really open because Seattle just doesn't get hot all that often, so they have the dome semi-open so they can provide rain cover without requiring a/c.

My assumption was that the stadium would be completely enclosed when the roof is shut (unlike Safeco, but like Minute Maid and Chase)... just wondering if the emphasis on views is that critical since none of the completely enclosed stadiums that I have been to offered decent skyline views. They have solid walls extending upwards all the way around so that the AC has a chance to work.

 

Safeco has a decent view of downtown but that's because of the open space in left field beginning at the top of the left field bleachers.

I know very little about South Florida mass transit, but from my experiences in other cities a shuttle bus system just to get to a metro line is highly impractical. And this looks to be a car traffic nightmare.

No it won't. Not for eighty one games of baseball.

 

Football (especially for a Florida school) is more of a marquee event that typically attracts a more dedicated adult audience (I'm speaking for all baseball teams) and is more willing to put up with mass transit hell. This is due to the nature of the sport itself and the number of games played per year.

 

Baseball, however, is a more family oriented and commonplace sport and consequently less of an incentive for people to be hassled in that manner.

 

 

Baltimore, for example, has among the worst mass transit system I have seen in a major US city but our light rail system and our metro system (despite how extremely limited they might be) still at least have stations within walking distance from the ballpark.

 

And I rely heavily on this horrid mass transit system. I constantly study bus schedules and other things just to save a couple of bucks. However, I would under no circumstances ever subject myself to such a thing (shuttle bus to metro) on a routine basis.

 

Not totally disagreeing with u but even though its 81 home games compared to around 5 homes games for the Canes, a Canes game would attracted, i don't no, about 70,000+ guests while the Fish would attract 35,000 at most. In theory, that means the traffic would be have as bad and in reality we wont have 35,000 for a while. I don't think traffic would be AS bad as some think. I think it would probably be the same like at Pro Player which I think is pretty good.

I haven't heard this from anyone, this doesn't even rise to the level of a rumor. Speculation might even be too strong.

 

That said, it dawns on me considering the biggest problem downtown, at least politically, was siting the juvenile courthouse and another less contentious project. I'm wondering with the OB coming down if that property might be better suited for these types of uses (there's the courthouse over by Jackson that is five minutes away), and in the process making room for an improved downtown location?

 

Just a thought. Million to one perhaps considering the mayor's speculator buddies have a significant investment in properties around the OB, but you never know. I think a case could be made that developing the site for use 250 days a year might have a greater impact on the neighborhood than eighty-one.
