Catching change: Before Thursday's game, Gonzalez met with Olivo and informed him that Matt Treanor will be getting more playing time.

Olivo, batting .239 on the season with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs, has been bothered by groin injury since last Thursday.

Asked about the catching situation, Gonzalez said, "He's still got that groin thing and also Matt is playing pretty good too. He's swinging the bat. If Olivo is upset, you still want to guys to be upset [about lack of playing time]."

Treanor is batting .310 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. Olivo has homered in two of his last three games.

Olivo, who is making $2 million, is the third highest player on the team. Most likely, the veteran does not fit into the Marlins' plans for next season. Treanor, meanwhile, is expected back in '08.

good

I honestly dont mind olivo with the bat (if batting 8th and as frustrating as he is) but I do mind him with the glove and his laziness behind the plate

if this happened two months ago i'd be happy. and that sentence = fredi.

what's wrong with that quote?

i mean, nothing really, but it just continues his string of less-than-truly-english comments, which are funny

those stupid billboards are turning me against Treanor

Then why did you vote for him?

I voted for Baker :thumbup

Matt believe in your right to vote whoever you like and he will try to represent you well anyways. :)

Blah, now we will have the true definition of black hole for your 8th spot.

wow, joe girardi, what a pleasure, you did a fantastic job last year. but fredi's a little different. he's gonna hit treanor, 7th. because you, uh, gotta, um, ya know, turn the, uh, linuep, uh, over, ya know?

and now it seems like uggla may hit 2nd again for a while. this is the change (hardly can be called that) after an 8 game losing streak? i know the offense isn't the problem but, looking up at the washington nationals essentially means you need to be shaking it up so you know what you have and what you need to change for next year. hit hermida 2nd for a month and see what happens. at least treanor is gonna play though. the idea of olivo playing himself out of being here next year somehow makes me ecstatic. that idiotic quote about gary tuck can't help either.

I'm glad to see this change made if nothing else for the pure fact that it shakes the lineup around a bit.

Treanor has shown a lot more with the bat this year and I think its a shame he hasn't gotten more opportunities sooner. For me, it's not anything against Olivo, but most teams seem to split catcher PT a lot more even than we do and Olivo never really deserved that status.

Yeah

I've wanted Treanor to start since May, I thought I'd actually care. Now it's just like, why does it even matter anymore.

It's nice that it's finally happening, but by this point I'd rather see Baker. By September I hope Baker's up and starts 2/5 starters. Hayes would be nice to see too, and atleast he's a deffensive minded catcher, but man I'm scared to know what he'll be like at the plate.

My -guess- is the reason Olivo kept getting playing time in August is to try and trade him via waivers.

Well, now Treanor has a bit over a month to show if his swing has really improved, or his 300+ batting average is nothing else but a fluke due to the fact that, since he is the back up, they just throw him down the middle all the time and he takes good advantage of it.

I do know that I welcome the change. As much as I like Olivo's bat, he strikes out way too much, has no patience, and on top of that, his defense this year has been horrendous. I really don't know what the heck happened to him over the off-season, but he lost all his catching skills (whichever ones he had). And at this point it really doesn't matter who we play anymore, so lets give Treanor 100 more ABs before October comes around.
