Delmon Young to the Twins

Featured Replies

The main pieces changning teams would be outfielder Delmon Young and righthander Matt Garza. But indications were strong on Wednesday that as many as six players could be involved.

In addition to Garza, the Twins would send Tampa Bay shortstop Jason Bartlett and reliever Juan Rincon for Young, shortstop Brendan Harris and outfielder Jason Pridie. Pridie was with the Twins during spring training of 2006 as a Rule 5 pick.

Rays need pitching...

Kazmir-Shields-Garza is a nice 1-2-3.

Getting pitching at a 3 or 4:1 value is not worth it.

Twins close to landing Delmon Young

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

The Twins and Tampa Bay Rays are close to finalizing a multi-player deal, according to several sources with knowledge of the discussions. The deal could be announced as soon as today.

Young, 22, hit .288 last season with 13 homers and 93 RBI and is considered one of the better young hitters in the game. Harris, 27, hit .286 with 12 homers and 59 RBI.

Check back here for more details - or when the deal is officially announced.

Garza seems to be the centerpiece now interesting.

So Minnesota gets a CF, a RF and a SS/2B prospect

TB will be getting a solid number 3 type SP, a SS for this year and a Setup man

I guess the twins wont want melky cabrera in a santana trade now

The Rays certainly need to deal from their position of strength to fix their issues and make themselves into something resembling a contender, but Young isn't really the guy I was expecting to see go. However, it does make a lot of sense to deal Young with his value high while the Rays have a number of guys who will be able to replace him potentially whose trade value isn't as high (Dukes, Baldelli, possibly Joel Guzman, etc.).

Bartlett only has 2+ years of service time so the Rays have him for 4 more years...it's Rincon that leaves after the year.

I also wouldn't call Brendan Harris a prospect. He'll be 27 next year and last year was his first year of success at the major league level. Bartlett and Harris are pretty much push on the offensive end (Bartlett has a better eye, Harris has more power...and that's assuming Harris can repeat last year, which I would consider a stretch all things considering) but Bartlett is a LOT better fielder (Bartlett one of the best, Harris one of the worst), so Bartlett > Harris

I'm also not that high on Pridie, whereas a lot of people seem to think the fact it's a big deal that the Twins got him into the deal...yeah he had a .914 OPS in AAA last year, but that was also in 245 ABs and his walk rate, hit rate, and power numbers were all way above what he had done previously. Not saying he can't be good at the major league level but I don't think him in the deal is that big.

I think something about Delmon to look at: 3.3% BB%. 3.3. Yes he walked more in the minors but it's nothing new for a guy to completely forget how to take a walk at the major league level (And he didn't walk all that much in the minors either, about 6% IIRC). If you watched Devil Rays games, he's Reggie Abercrombie/Miguel Olivo in the fact that he'll swing at everything and anything. Dude is a special talent, when his power numbers come around he's going to put up a very good BAA/SLG with good defense, not saying other wise...but if he continues to walk at this rate his value isn't as high as poeple make it out to be IMO.

I would think Delmon could grab more but Garza is a very good pitcher. I think the twins "win" but it's not that bad of a trade for the Rays and argueably helps them more than it hurts them. The main thing is Rincon IMO...should get something better than him...

Why can't the Marlins get in on this?

Willis, Olsen, hell both. Jesus. Why on earth are they trading Young?

I don't think they'd give up Young for either of those guys currently. Maybe Willis, but with his value so low I don't think he is worth as much as an intriguing pitching prospect like Garza because he hasn't shown he is capable of being a frontline pitcher the last two years.

So give 'em Sanchez. Give 'em Volstad or Thompson. Hell, I'd say give them any two out of those three. Any team with pitching to burn should be exhausting every possible channel to get Delmon Young. This guy was absolutely untouchable this year, had a decent big league season and just turned 22.

Delmon Young isn't the key to making this team a winner. I'd like to have him to, but blowing the farm on him doesn't solve any of our problems because we already have a top prospect (who had more impact last year IMO) in RF and a pretty good guy in left too. He isn't going to bring stability to our rotation while all the guys you mentioned might.

None of our pitchers are difference makers, save perhaps Anibal. They're all high end 3's. Young in left, Hermida in right and Hammer at 1st is an EPIC trio, plus Hanley, Miggy and Uggla. Jeeeeee-sus

We don't have anyone big league ready that's uninjured on Garza's level. You could argue Volstad but he's not proven and really not exactly coming off a great minor league year.

It also looks like TB wants to solve SS in this trade. We have nothing to offer.

I also wouldn't say Delmon's year was decent. He was the worst offensive qualified RFer in all of baseball last year, by far. .249 GPA...ouch. All he did was hit for average. Yes his power will come around, I know he's only 22 years old...but even then all he will do is hit for average and power. I'm not saying that's bad, but he'll probably only be OPSing in the .830's-.850's, .900+ in high BABIP years.

Again that's not bad by any means and I'm not saying, he's going to be a very good ballplayer, make several allstar teams, yadda yadda yadda, that but I think you're grossly overrated his talents. The implications from the desperality in your posts makes it sound like you think he's a once in a generation talent.

No, I just can't fathom Garza being anything close to equal value for him. I think we've got enough pitching of interchangeable quality for Garza. You're talking about two years nothing overwhelming, nothing dominating. Even in the minors he wasn't overly dominant.

I think the main dealbreaker is SS though. From what's been said at TB boards, one of the main focuses this offseason is a deffensive minded SS that isn't a liability on offense. And the only thing we have to offer (Andino) isn't that. Bartlett is hardly that (very good deffense, barely non-liability offense) though...

And I certainly agree that I would think Delmon could get more than Garza and I agree on the front that any team with a lot of pitching depth should be calling TB (Where's LAA on this? Yeah they're "crowded" there but Delmon's better than all but Vlad), but I still don't think we could match up with Garza. Although it's been two years, he's only had 24 starts which is only about 75% of a years worth, and has been really good in the minors (2.88 ERA, 10.04 K/9, 1.09 WHIP). Last year's AAA deffinatly weren't dominant, but still, we don't have much uninjured mlb-ready depth.

Most of what we have to offer is guys who aren't ready, and TB already has a lot of good minor league pitchers. And considering that JJ, Anibal, and Nolasco are all coming off injury-plauged years, I have to doubt that they're values are high atm.

I think if the Rays were able to replace Rincon with Neshek, it would be a lot better on their end. And you have to think the Rays are holding the chips right now. Demand Neshek, if the Twins don't give him up, go somewhere else.

The trio you just named isn't any better than Young, Crawford, Upton, Dukes, and Pena, and where did it get the Rays who had pretty much equal or better starting pitching performance to us? The point is, you can't win with just a few quality bats.

Right, but you just named 5 guys, not three (which a trio is, if you were wondering). A top 5 of Hanley, Hermida, Cabrera, Young and Uggla/Willingham is just absurd, especially in the National League.
