August 14, 200817 yr I began reading this thread and was like WTF? Cantu is killing it. Then I realized the date :banghead I just made the same mistake... Why was this brought up from the depths of the Fish Threadage? Because its funny. Cantu always had offensive potential and Castillo is a never was, yet people actually wanted Castillo.

To be fair, most of those people was benched. Sorry, had to slip that Sideshow Bob-ish quote in there.
August 14, 200817 yr Cantu didnt need to have the season he has had to make me want him more than Castillo, who is just awful in about every sense of the word and always has been.

Yeah, my issue was with Dallas in May, when Cantu was struglin'. I wouldn't understand anybody who would have wanted Castillo. Defense is extremely overrated and you know what you're getting out of him offensively (sub-.700 OPS, sub-.300 OBP).
August 14, 200817 yr That so far Castillo is above average defensively and average offensively while Cantu is average defensively and above average offensively. Production wise, they are basically identical. Alernatively, it means this was a stupid topic. Correct. For the most part. And not even worth reading anymore. It is unbelievable that someone could have enough hate of our FO to start questioning the production of one of our very best clutch hitters. Not to mention that he has been learning the position and has excelled at that. Toss out the learning curve, the non catches at 1B that went as throwing errors, and he has been one of the better IFers. Not a GGer, but now he is playing above average 3B. AND he has got to be considered for Comeback Player Of The Year. I don't think he will get it because I think it will come down to a sentimental vote going to Ankiel. And I really wouldn't have a problem with that.

To look at his overall numbers on the year and make a judgement on that is the stupid thing in this thread.
August 14, 200817 yr heres a scary thought amid our current crisis regarding cold bats etc if we had went for castillo - who would currently be our #3 hitter.............. cantu has done a great job and far exceeded my expectations from him

I think it's safe to say Beinfest made the right call.

August 14, 200817 yr I'm serious when i say that we would be worse than the Braves if we chose Castillo over Cantu. We would be probably 4-6 games back if we chose Mcphearson over Cantu.

I say if we have Cabrera we would be in the same position we are now

August 14, 200817 yr DLC is the one guy (maybe Carroll) where I feel Fredi handled the kid's entry into MLB badly. It may be that Wiley didn't want him and felt the FO shoved him down their throats but they threw him to the wolves and he was clearly punch-drunk by the time they returned him to Albuquerque. That he's returning to his previous form is encouraging. As for a comment above regarding taking McPherson over Cantu, I know we're talking in the hypothetical but mcPherson was injured most of spring training and was never even in the picture. The reason it would have been a bad choice is not necessarily because Cantu is that much better but Cantu was healthy and McPherson needed six weeks in Albuquerque as essentially his spring training to get where he could play everyday.

I'm willing to bet that Dontrelle and Barone/Seddon couldn't outpitch a duo of Miller/Badenhop When he went to the DL he was the 2nd worst pitcher (based on ERA+) in the league. As I said it woudln't take much if anything to do better than that. If you think it's hard to replace a guy with an ERA+ of 74 then we'll just have to disagree.
August 15, 200817 yr Author Why does this thread keep getting bumped? So I was wrong. Move on. It's ridiculous that I'm having to ask this question on a board full of adults but can a mod please lock this?
