June 2, 200818 yr Castillo: 196 AB, .257/.311/.440/.750, 2 HR, 19 RBI, .948 FPCT, 2.63 RF, .802 ZR Cantu: 210 AB, .267/.329/.437/.766, 8 HR, 27 RBI, .916 FPCT, 2.53 RF, .755 ZR Looks like Beinfest relied a little too much on spring stats.
June 2, 200818 yr So far this season: Castillo: .260 EQA, 5 FRAA, 4.3 WARP3 Cantu: .271 EQA, 0 FRAA, 4.2 WARP3 In terms of how much they're helping their respective teams, they've been the same damn player this season. Cantu brings more at the plate, Castillo more in the field. You can pick on Beinfest for many things. This is not one.

June 2, 200818 yr what the hell does all that crap mean ... :confused It means Cantu and Castillo are identical in production as of right now.

The point I was making is that Castillo's bat is nearly as good as Cantu's and if he had the protection in the lineup Cantu has, it'd probably be as good if not better.
June 2, 200818 yr That so far Castillo is above average defensively and average offensively while Cantu is average defensively and above average offensively. Production wise, they are basically identical. Alernatively, it means this was a stupid topic.

June 2, 200818 yr Everytime Cantu getz a ground ball I expect him to miss it. Sad, I really miss Cabrera, can we trade to get him back?

June 2, 200818 yr Cantu provides entertainment, especially on the road, watching the fans in the seats behind first base praying for their lives.
June 2, 200818 yr Numbers say otherwise. FRAA is a horrible fielding metric (And by result, WARP is a bad statistic although I love it in theory). Cantu is a bad defender and Castillo is at best an average defender. And both aren't good so it's rather moot. But out of the two I'd rather have Cantu. Out of the two he's a lot more likely to actually keep a mid 700 OPS, and for as much talk as Castillo's glove gets, it's not actually good. He was an average defending 2b because of his above average abillity to turn a double play. At third base, he no longer has that luxury to bump him to a league average defender.
June 2, 200818 yr And actually looking at the numbers, Castillo isn't doing much better than Cantu with the glove. Castillo has displayed more range (5 more out of zone plays in similiar innings), but both are fielding within the zone at the same rate. Both are fielding in the bottom 5-7 of the league.

Im sorry bro but this is a ridiculous post. Even worse is that you started a thread over it. :thumbdown Also, I don't have proof but hasn't there been talk that Castillo is a malcontent in the clubhouse?
June 3, 200818 yr A stat that's good to look at when evaluating players, is win shares. It factors both offense and defense, unlike some other stats. http://www.hardballtimes.com/thtstats/main...p;Submit=Submit Cantu has been slightly better, thus far.
June 3, 200818 yr After all this discussion, I have come to the conclusion that I would like the opportunity to see Dallas McPhearson sooner rather than later. Yes, he strikes out a lot, but he's still getting onbase at a .383 clip and has an OPS over 1.000 and yes, I realize he's in the PCL. Still, the guy can hit and he's got to be better defensively than Cantu. That said, Cantu is about what I expected.
June 3, 200818 yr We made the right decision. Cantu hasn't been as bad defensively as it seems. He can make just as many good plays as mistakes. Plus, his bat is a big boost to this lineup, considering we have minimal production from our CF and C spots.
June 3, 200818 yr Castillo: 196 AB, .257/.311/.440/.750, 2 HR, 19 RBI, .948 FPCT, 2.63 RF, .802 ZR Cantu: 210 AB, .267/.329/.437/.766, 8 HR, 27 RBI, .916 FPCT, 2.53 RF, .755 ZR Looks like Beinfest relied a little too much on spring stats. I vote for Castillo.

If you had removed the names I still would have taken Cantu's line in a heartbeat.
