June 22, 200818 yr I don't get the Joe Nelson love fest. It's not worth it making a minor league journeyman relief pitcher your closer when you are in the middle of a pennant race. Nelson has pitched 13 good innings, given up the same number of home runs as Gregg has and nobody has a scouting report out on him yet. When they do, I doubt he will be as effective. It would be a rash move and a mistake. Who was Gregg before he came to us? An expendable starter who couldn't cut it and got moved to the pen, just to be used by the Angels as a mopup guy. Sometimes you can just catch lighting in a bottle. The way Nelson is pitching, why not give him a shot? Gregg is a few years younger than Nelson, pitched a TON more innings in the majors, with some success in the AL, and fell into the closer role taking over for Jorge freakin' worst closer ever Julio, on a struggling team that realistically was going nowhere, and has been very solid in that role ever since. He isn't putting up bad numbers, he has had some bad games, but to make a change right now would be a mistake, IMO. If he starts putting up Julio like numbers or you see the velocity on his FB drop, or his slider isn't breaking right...you start thinking about it. None of those things are happening right now though. no...you're right...but he does have a problem. He can't SEE the plate, therefore he barely has any control for his pitches. Seriously...his control is terrible. Nelson is actually throwing strikes, and has a WHIP of .94, right now. You're right...scouting reports might not be out on him yet...that could be a good thing. Why not use him while he's still a secret? At least Nelson doesn't need special signals from his catcher. If you're gonna close, you should be able to throw strikes, consistently. That's the opposite of what Gregg has been doing ALL YEAR.

That's the opposite of what Gregg has been doing ALL YEAR. 13 innings is too small a sample to praise a low WHIP right now. And most of those pitches except for the sliders in the dirt would have been called strikes by a lot of umpires. The ump tonight had a very tight strike zone, and Gregg wasn't getting any calls.
June 22, 200818 yr Author I'm really sick of his crap. Seems like we need a 10 run lead for him to be able to close the game. Word Rachel :thumbdown

June 22, 200818 yr Why doesn't anyone listen to Godfather? He speaks the truth. Gregg gives me heart attacks when he comes in. ALWAYS. But he seems to nail it down most of the time, Albeit very scarily. I'm curious to see what his Opponents BA is...
June 22, 200818 yr I've been hearing alot about Fuentes, but it would be trading one risk for another.
June 22, 200818 yr Author Closers, are supposed to close and for what Gregg is making he's not worth it right now. Give him a pay cut, lol.
June 22, 200818 yr I'm curious to see what his Opponents BA is... I'm not gonna check now, but I know it's very good (under .200) Still though...that doesn't matter when you're constantly letting the opposing team score w/o the benefit of a hit, at times. He now has 23 walks in 35.2 innings...that's just terrible. His WHIP and K rate...also NOTHING to brag about...especially for a "closer." And fact is...he's 13/17 in save opportunities. That's not even the definition of "bend but don't break" anymore. It's not really a great save %, by any means.

His 1.212 WHIP is the best on the team outside Waechter and Nelson (Who's WHIP has been dropping). It's a full .200 points under the league average. While I don't want to see him as the closer anymore, I'm not going to pretend he has a bad WHIP just to please me.

Is that # comparing him to relievers? Closers only? Or all? It's unfair to put starters' stats in there, as well, as they generally go more innings...and have higher WHIP's. I'd like to hear what Gregg's WHIP is compared to OTHER CLOSERS (since that's his job)...I doubt it's above average, if there's such a stat.

Also, I don't want to compare him to other closers for WHIP because I am thinking of him as a part of our pen, not as our closer. WHIP shouldn't really change depending on what role you fill back there unless it's something like going from LOOGY to long man.

Jones - 1.39 Gregg is awesome compared to these closers, wait he beat Todd Jones... hmm Jones sounds familiar where has he pitched hmm.. lol
