Is Josh Willingham done for the season?

Featured Replies

What happen to all the threads earlier, about wait till Willingham return, this line up going to tear the cover off the ball when he return, i post in one of the threads, no one know how someone will be when their return from an injury and was blasted by some folks on here, i notice they are quiet now.

Come on. Every week people are calling for someone else's head. Hermida, Jacobs, Uggla, Hammer. This is our damn team for the rest of the season, let's support them. We've won with them all season long

So vote that you have faith.

Personally, while I have been against some of the hate some players have been getting, I think its justified with Josh. He just isn't healthy, and hasn't been since he came back. Nobody can really deny it either. Its hard because he's a nice kid and makes you want to root for him, but lets face it, he sucks right now, and it doesn't look like he's close to snapping out of it.

What's the alternative, Gonzo? Then he goes 0-4 one game and we'll be burning him at the stake. I understand Hammer isn't the Hammer of old but this is OUR team that got us this far, we need to have faith. Last week it was Jacobs, then he gets hot at Shea and now the bullseye moves to someone else. Sometimes its having the right mix of players that makes a team good. Look at the Yankees, they've been fielding a team of allstars for the last couple of years and haven't won anything. They won their WS with guys like Scott Brocius, Paul O'Neill, Tino Martinez, guys that on paper didn't blow you away but made it work as a team. These Marlins have a similar chemistry, a lot of guys on paper don't look like allstars, but somehow as a team they make it work

First of all, comparing us to a Yankees team that won over 100 games multiple times is a TERRIBLE analogy.

Second, Jake was cold. Josh is not healthy. There is a difference. Hitters go through hot and cold streaks, but Josh just isn't healthy right now and its plain as daylight. His bat speed isn't there, the back is still bothering him, and I don't see how waiting it out is going to do anything... a bad back doesn't just get better by playing baseball everyday.

My analogy is terrible. Yet all the bandwagon jumping is fine. Maybe we should trade Hanley for Sheffield, b/c he's cooled off. I mean its just out of hand with all these.. "get rid of so-and-so" There's no support at all, everyday there's a new dismantling scenario. I'm fan of this team regardless who's on the field. Can we be better? Probably. But we can also be worse. Why don't talk about how much the Philly's and Mets suck rather than our own team.

Last i check i'm not a fan of the mets or phillies, why do i have to talk about them, you cannot expect fans to talk about the team only when they win a game.

Him and Gonzo need to split games evenly. As much of a fan of Hammer I am, he is blowing. Im sick of seeing Hermida and Ross being benched in the outfield and Hammer playing night in and night out while Hermida and Ross are performing much better than Hammer.

Yeah all he needs is a lilttle brench sit him for a game play Gonzo and make him fight for his spot.

I don't know if sitting him will put that fire up his a**, but at this point we have no other choice, he has to sit for a prolonged period of time. Gonzo has played well when he starts, give him the week and let Josh rot on the bench, let him think about everything that has gone wrong since he has returned from the injury. Maybe then he can correct what he is doing wrong

I think if Gonzo was in there, he would of got Hanley in from 3rd at least one of those times, probably both. Willingham just does not know how to hit under pressure.

Meh, I didn't mean this to be a flat out bash Josh thread... I really do believe his back is still bothering him, normally he's one of the guys on this team I would trust in that spot.

This is just an example of people letting recent failures warp their memory. Over the last 3 years, Hammer has been one of our best "clutch" hitters.

Just an example here:

RISP .274/.391/.494/.885
2 outs, RISP .296/.427/.537/.964
Tie Game .297/.404/.465/.869
Within 1 R .291/.386/.489/.875
Within 2 R .290/.384/.492/.876
Within 3 R .284/.376/.488/.864
Within 4 R .278/.371/.478/.849

Didn't Willingham also have his first Sacrifice of the season in NY? Just because he hits for average doesn't mean he hits when we need a run.

i think that was hermida and osrry to hammer butthe guy is doing nothing he has g2 go.

real marlins fans wont bring him down so hes not producing so wat!!! do i need to remind u all that in the beginning of the year he was batting .350 and producing most of the runs. i think his injury is affecting his performance. honestly i say split starts with gonzo let him rest this off season and maybe he'll come back the way he did in the beginning of this season.

yea but how long ago did he come back from injury...if something still wrong with him take him out. gonzo earned the spot. him and uggla have been doing horrible well there are alot more *cough Hermida cough* but hopefully action is taken soon.

That was Hermida. BTW, Hermida is one of the best guys in the game with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs, So I don't care that he has only 1 sac fly.

And the stats quoted are Willingham getting hits when we can get runs, so your point was off even if you weren't entirely incorrect.

That was Hammer with the sac fly. But that's not really important.

He hit .350 with a healthy back. The entire point of this thread, even though I didn't clarify in the opening post (and probably should have) is that Hammer is still injured, and probably won't fully recover til next season. If I thought he was slumping, I wouldn't suggest he's done for the rest of the year.

Normally Hammer is one of the hitters I really appreciate in our lineup... he doesn't have all the physical tools of a Hermida or a Hanley, but he's just a very intelligent guy at the plate with a good eye.

Hermida and Willingham both had their first sac fly's of the season, but again 2 guys on the team with their first sacrifices, they need a differnt guy in there who can get a sac fly. It is simple baseball and it can be done. with 3 batters a guy shouldn't be left at third, especially with hanleys speed. All the have to do is get it a little deep so hanley can run.

Its all moot, because the next inning they hit another HR so whatever.

it was just an offf game for them seriously weve been watching them all year and not once have they played like that. the marlins are were they are at now because there a family when one guys in a slump the other players pick it up. thats wat makes them such a dangerous team cause they get offense from everyone in the lineup. thats something u cant teach no matter how much money u pay ( perfect examples Yankees). so just dont give up on them yet btw i have a feeling hanleys gonna get in a very hot streak to end the year. and besides cantu's in the lineup tonite so that takes some pressure of hammer

It was an off game, but the problem is that all year they can not do a lot with RISP.

Hermida has 16 PA with a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs. He's driven that man in 10 times and walked once. Who gives a crap if he's had sac flies? I'd much rather take his 1.000+ OPS in such situations.

For the record guys, this is the first time all year that we get a guy on 3rd with no outs and he doesn't come home.

We're 6th in league in runs scored

Actually this is an example of people parroting the nonsense coming out of Tommy Hutton's mouth. Our numbers with runenrs on and with runners in scoring position are good but most people think they suck because certain moron named Tommy keeps whining about them.

With runners on our OPS is 2nd in the NL.

With RISP our OPS is 5th in the NL.

Yeah, but that's because of slugging. Our OBP is 8th with Men On and 10th with RISP.

Men on is fine, but I'm not a fan of it with RISP.

I never said it wasn't, but I've always felt OPS overvalued slugging.

Look, I've never been one of those "WE ARE BAD WITH RISP!!!" guys, so me and you are on the same side of this argument. I just think it would be nice to get our OBP up with RISP.
