November 26, 200817 yr You continue to show how little you know about the subject at hand. I can just hear it now, "Ohhhhhh Cliff, we know you can barely walk and the Rays have no use for you after they cut you from their roster before the World Series, and yeah we know you can barely play a half a season and haven't played a whole one since 2005, and yeah we remember what you called David and calling the team minor league without you, and demanding $40 million or ownership was a bunch of carpetbaggers and that you openly admitted you rooted against the Marlins in the 2003 World Series, not for the Yankees, just against the Marlins, and we're going to try and ignore that I'd go to Japan before I'd play for the Marlins remark after the Red Sox dumped you because...oh Cliffiepoo...we need you so much." Yeah I can just hear that conversation taking place. Are you trying to imply Cliff Floyd provided nothing for the Rays this past year? Who cares if he can barely play half a season? We'd be getting him to provide a left-handed bat who could occasionally play the OF...COMING OFF THE BENCH. Seriously...now it just sounds like you are a little bitter towards the guy. Are you related to Loria / Samson, or something?

November 26, 200817 yr I was going to say something about Hermida and the Phillies... never mind looks like i took a wrong turn some where.

November 26, 200817 yr Yes Erick, I'll say it again - Cliff Floyd has zero chance of ever stepping foot in the Marlins clubhouse unless he comes by during Fanfest. And what happens if he does Marlins2003? Just curious what you would say? Listen Marlins2003, I don't think he will sign back with the Marlins, but if he fits a need and can be signed cheaper than any other option and the FO does not do it just because of some words spoken 6 years ago...that shows that this FO is selfish, does not care about the fans and they put their own petty interests above winning. If you work in a million dollar business you can't be that sensitive, Marlins2003. I've owned several (multi) million dollar businesses (that's how I retired young) and I can tell you one thing, people have long memories and the bigger their wallets the longer their memories. I know guys who have battled each other over a golf game gone bad twenty years ago, I've seen companies declare war on one another because the president's wife of one insulted the "daughter" (actually it was his girlfriend and therein was the mistake) of the other. If you want to believe there are no egos in corporate boardrooms you certainly entitled to that opinion. My experience tells me that's not the case. Especially in privately held companies like the Marlins. I hear what you're saying though and if I'm wrong I'll start my own thread and heap scorn upon myself and when I'm done beating myself up you all can take a shot at me. There are just too many options for the Marlins than to grovel at the feet of Cliff Floyd and forgive five years of bad-mouthing the franchise, management and ownership, especially a broken down Cliff Floyd who will want top dollar for part-time play. We just got rid of Josh Willingham because they can't trust his back when his salary got too rich, Cliff would want more and guaranteed to play less. It ain't gonna happen.
November 26, 200817 yr Wes Helms was over in a flash compared to Cliffie and he never went where Cliff and his mouth did for five years. They aren't even close. You're joking right?

Who says they have to grovel... they call his agent and offer him essentially a clone of Gonzo's contract last year and say "Take it or leave it"... No big deal for either side

Who says they have to "grovel", you offer the contract and walk away... if he hates it, he can't say anything worse than he already has, if he takes it - cool, you got your LH PH/OF/1B bat

I don't think we need/should grovel to a gimpy 35 year old. Not sure the market is too big for him at this point either.
November 26, 200817 yr Marlins23 and Erick are talking past each other. Yes, Marlins23, the odds of Floyd coming back are low, but it is because the FO has been talking about youth, speed and defense not slowness and oldness. However, at the right price, with no other options, a team will not refuse to sign a player because of comments he made 5 years ago. Or even last year. Fans may think like this, but good owners dont. Like GodF said, baseball is a business. The fact remains that Floyd's mediocre bat was barely good enough to keep him around in TB with a DH spot to fill. But all this does not mean that there is no chance the Marlins will sign him, just that they probably wont, or maybe that they shouldnt. You guys arent even arguing about the same thing, its pretty ridiculous. I see the Hermida thread is 5 pages long and I think its actually about something that matters, maybe a rumor or something, sheesh. NEWS PLEASE!!!!! :thumbdown

Not sure the market is too big for him at this point either. Yea, if the marlins or any other team show interest he will be grateful. Its a business, remember? The guy probably wants another couple paychecks so he can buy jet-skis.

The guy probably wants another couple paychecks so he can buy jet-skis. DD, the one thing, I would disagree about his is not an occasional off the cuff comment, his have been a six year long tormenting of his previous team that started the day new ownership took over. I don't think that's easily forgotten or forgiven. It's human nature that when a guy has been sh*tting in your hat for five or six years, you aren't about to invite him over for Thanksgiving. The Marlins have had at least three chances over the last six years to reconnect with Cliffie or even open a dialogue, and they haven't. It's not dissimilar to the Barry Bonds/Giants thing. One can make all the rational arguments a person wants about he doesn't fit with the team, he overshadows everyone else, his defense has diminished and he'll never outperform any contract they offered, but the bottomline is they want nothing to do with the man, not the ballplayer, they are rid of Barry Bonds and happy for it. At least we agree Cliff Floyd is a bad fit with Beinfest's pronouncements about the direction the team is headed. He's the wrong guy at the wrong time on a number of levels and I do think you underestimate the antipathy the Marlins hold toward Floyd, but as I said, even if there's a substantive report that the Marlins are pursuing Cliff (as opposed to the opposite or his agent saying he had conversations with the Marlins front office), whether he would ultimately be signed or not, I'll be the first to say I was 100% wrong.
November 26, 200817 yr Erick, once again the fact that you don't know what you're talking about does not mean I have to lift a finger to assist you. Nor, unless you're calling me a liar, do I have to back up every word I say here when all of it is in the archives of this website and if you weren't so lazy you would have found all by yourself. There's no losing an argument on this kid. That's your usual gambit. Really you trot that out all the time and it's just not anyone's job here to be your mentor. Get off your a** and find it for yourself. I know what he said...and you're still wrong. The fact you think the Marlins or any other team, for that matter, would completely rule out signing a player b/c of a "he said, she said" disagreement in the past is silly. It's a business and I'm sure the Marlins wouldn't mind signing Floyd if it meant helping their business (a.k.a a couple more wins for the upcoming year). Last time I checked, nobody wanted to sign Barry Bonds because he said he didn't do steroids, but she said he did. And, last time I checked, he was still a 1.000+ OPS player. So, even though Bonds could help someone's business, he will not be doing so because of petty interests that have nothing to due with performance on the field. Cliff Floyd will not be a Marlin, ever again. Not even if he begged and pleaded for a minor-league deal. This ownership can be very spiteful. You don't seem to realize that.
November 26, 200817 yr I WANT BARRY BONDS!!!!!! OMGZ!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I want him on our team. (Now watch as I tie this in to the original thread) Seriously, I want him on our team........to share time with Cody and Hermida.
