December 8, 200817 yr Would love to see the Marlins add Ronny Paulino. Thnking back to last season when the Marlins nearly acquired Manny Ramirez, the Marlins would have sent Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates. Wondering if the Pirates still would be interested in Hermida. If so, I would do a trade that would send Jeremy Hermida to the Pirates for C Ronny Paulino and RP John Grabow. How much cocaine did you just snort up your nose to type such a horrific sentence. heheh
December 9, 200817 yr Weren't the Pirates interested in Treanor? Why don't we just swap Treanor for Paulino?
December 9, 200817 yr Weren't the Pirates interested in Treanor? Why don't we just swap Treanor for Paulino? The Pirates weren't interested in Treanor. They were interested in Treanor to package him with Jack Wilson in a trade to the Tigers. That's not happening now. Paulino is certainly better than Treanor.

Paulino is light years better than Treanor. He's probably better than Baker too.

Paulino is light years better than Treanor. He's probably better than Baker too. Why would you say that? Paulino vs. Treanor is a joke matchup. Paulino is 28-years old and he has played in 304 games in the majors with a .278 career average and a .713 OPS. In 2006 he played in 129 games for the Pirates and hit .310. Matt Treanor is a 33-year old catcher who can't hit. In 274 games in his major league career he has a .237 avg, with a .639 OPS. If you look up the word stiff in the dictionary you might see Treanor's picture there. The reason I say that Paulino is probably better than Baker too is because Baker has very limited major league experience. He could get better or worse...only time will tell. He did take a long time to get to the majors and he was not a super impressive minor league player despite playing in a lot of hitters' parks. He did hit good with the Marlins last season but we'll see how well he does in 2009 now that there are a lot of scouting reports on him.
December 9, 200817 yr You understand that when it comes to actually fielding the position Treanor is so far ahead of Paulino (and I like Paulino and was the first one to mention him as a guy the Fish should look at, but let's be fair) defensively it isn't even close - and last time I checked backup catchers are supposed to be there primarily as defensive replacements. The problem with sticking with Treanor is not unlike with Willingham, do you pay him arb money not knowing how he'll hold up physically? Were there no question about Treanor's health we probably wouldn't be having this discussion about Paulino.

Watch and see how long he's out of work if the Marlins let him go. I would be stunned if he got anything more than a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

December 9, 200817 yr Ummm...right now, we shouldn't be looking for a backup catcher. We should be looking for a catcher that can split time with Baker. Paulino hits left-handed pitching better than Treanor. Paulino isn't terrible defensively, by any means. Paulino has more upside. Paulino is a good option to me.

Beinfest seems to have made it clear that they aren't looking for a platoon candidate. He seems to be satisfied with Baker as the Marlins starting catcher in 2009. This is something all of you platoon advocates seem to unfortunately have blinders on about. Beinfest and the Marlins don't do platoons. Year after year I see these proposals on here for platoons but what do we see when the season rolls along? One man winning the starting job and keeping it as long as he isn't injured or completely tank. As things stand, it looks like Baker is the favorite to be the Marlins starting catcher. If the Marlins get Paulino, he'll be the backup. Or the starting catcher if Baker regresses. Then it will be Paulino as starting catcher and Baker as the backup. But nothing in between.

Didn't Treanor and Rabelo platoon to start the year? Also, if Paulino only played against LHP (which he hits very well), he'd effectively be just a backup. How many games do LHP start each year? If they did a dead split, I'm guessing Baker gets at least 95-100 starts vs RHP, and I'm not sure how many more starts they want him to have than that anyway.

The Marlins don't do platoons? 'Ya sure? I recall Helms getting times against lefties last year. I recall, once upon a time, when Amezaga and Cody Ross used to platoon in CF (which was a stupid platoon, but a platoon, nonetheless). Plus, Beinfest just picks up the pieces he feels fit the team. The one that sets out the lineups for platoons, etc. are the managers...not the general managers. That decision will be Fredi Gonzalez', if the situation presents itself.

That wasn't platooning with Helms. He got spot starts against lefties, this is true, but there was no true LHP/RHP platoon at any position. With Amezaga and CF in 2006, I recall that being more experimentation and trying to find anything that sticks there - eventually it ended up being Amezaga pretty much full time.
December 9, 200817 yr With Amezaga and CF in 2006, I recall that being more experimentation and trying to find anything that sticks there - eventually it ended up being Amezaga pretty much full time. That's not true at all. The Marlins had an Amezaga/Ross platoon for a while in CF before they realized that having Amezaga in the starting lineup wasn't as valuable as having him on the bench + Cody Ross proved that he could be a solid CF'er, both offensively providing power in the lineup...and defensively. But for a while, it was Amezaga against RHP & Cody against LHP.

But for a while, it was Amezaga against RHP & Cody against LHP. Ah, I was talking about 2006 and you were talking about 2007. That was the first misunderstanding. It looks like I'll have to bite my tongue with regard to platoons from here on out. I had forgotten the Amezaga/Cody platoon at the beginning of the 2008 season. So I'll just have to submit my mea culpa with regard to platoons. But I do still hold to my belief that if Gaby wins the 1B starting gig out of ST, he will not be platooning with Dallas. While Dallas has killed RHP, I think that Gaby has put up solid enough numbers against righties to start against them and his development will not be held back so that the Marlins can pull off this platoon which, on paper right now, looks good.
December 9, 200817 yr Jake and Helms/Boone were platoons aswell. Not really this past season, but in 2006 and up to Boone's injury in 2007. And yeah, Alfredo/Cody definitely had platoon going.

December 10, 200817 yr The Palm Beach Post reports a rumor that the Marlins have offered shortstop Robert Andino to the Pirates for catcher Ronny Paulino. Paulino, 27, would likely split time with John Baker in Florida. Andino, 24, hit .206 with two homers and nine RBI in 63 at-bats after a September call-up last season. He's better known for his defense. -Rotoworld
