March 28, 200917 yr Paulino will not be playing the majority of the games. He's a good pickup don't get me wrong, but the pickup isn't going to be the difference between making and missing the playoffs. Baker having another successful season is a lot more important than Paulino having a good season. The fallacy in that lies in the risk that *knock on wood* Baker goes down for an extended period of time... Career OPS+ Treanor - 70 Paulino - 86 Rabelo - 61 therein lies part of the big difference this makes... as Nny said once, most teams have a backup catcher, we just went to AAA talent/fodder. Now we have a bonafide backup catcher... that's worth a bit in the long run. agreed. We got a good backup and a good compliment for Baker. At least we have some insurance, and most importantly we don't have to deal with Rabelo.
March 28, 200917 yr Whoever thinks this is a minor deal that won't make a big difference isn't thinking clearly. I thought acquiring Pudge could be the difference, and this is the same type of acquisition. Paulino could be responsible for 200 ab's behind the plate. Giving those ab's to Paulino, who can do some damage, instead of Rabelo, who is another pitcher in the lineup, is huge.
March 28, 200917 yr I do agree Rabelo sucked at the plate but he couldnt have been as bad as hoover. Paulino is like Babe Ruth compard to Hoover.

This is like Pudge, except that Paulino has hit way better against LHP than Pudge has over the last 4 years, but the same people who would have been going nuts over Pudge see this as minor.
March 28, 200917 yr Love this move, especialy seeing what we gave up for him. I just hope we get the 2007 Paulino, not the 2008 Paulino.
March 28, 200917 yr Love this move, especialy seeing what we gave up for him. I just hope we get the 2007 Paulino, not the 2008 Paulino. Correa's a pretty serious arm. In most every other system, he's a top-15 prospect. He's had injury problems but he's also a big break out candidate. His ERA hasn't been pretty, but his peripherals have been great. 9.6 K/9, 3.0 bb/9, 0.9 HR/9. the thing about it is that he is easily the best thing moved in the whole Paulino fiasco. Jason Jaramillo, who the Pirates got, is a back up catcher at best, most likely a career AAA fodder. Jack Traschner is a LOOGY who can't get left handed batters out. And than Correa comes in, who's a big time risk but also potential. It was a great move for the Giants. And it shouldn't hurt us in the long run, but you can't discredit Correa because of our depth.

I wasn't trying to discredit him or anything. I just never heard of him, so I assumed that he wasn't very good. I guess I was wrong. Still, this is a very fair trade for both teams.

This is a fantastic move. Now go get Ohman already.

I'm hopeful Paulino rockets lefties and isn't embarrassing with the limited right handers he faces so we can recoup our prospect at the end of the season with moving him.
March 29, 200917 yr Jayson Stark on Ronny Paulino: "Before the Phillies traded Ronny Paulino to the Giants (who then dealt him to Florida), the Mets and Marlins were also interested. I surveyed four scouts Saturday on the Paulino-for-Jack Taschner deal. They all voted it a steal for the Phillies. "Good thing the Phillies traded Paulino when they did," said one. "The more they showcased him, the worse he got." http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?...me=stark_jayson

However goes without saying getting Paulino is a better move for the Marlins. Pudge was not in agreement with the role offered on the team by the Marlins. This is actually a perfect fit for Paulino. I didn't believe we would ever get him and I am happier than a pig in slop that We did. Huge move by Beinfest...Huge! I am sure we are gonna love to see Paulino catching

March 29, 200917 yr And Mungo serves up news of the sobering reality: Paulino has fallen severely out of favor the last couple of years and wasn't looking good this spring. Taking on a catcher that no one else sees potential in at this point was a reach for the Marlins, and reflects how badly they felt about their options.
March 29, 200917 yr Mungo beat me to my post. Paulino has gotten bad reviews at every stop for his lack of work ethic and general laziness. He doesn't run well. I really like our front office and I would be the first to jump on their bandwagon for finding diamonds in the rough, (case in point Baker) but were the Pirates, Phillies, and Giants all dumb? I would have preferred to see the Marlins get Adam Melhuse from the Rangers. He had a terrific spring (I know ST stats are misleading), and from all I've heard he is a terrific clubhouse guy, can play 3rd or 1st, is a switch hitter and was perfect compliment to Jason Kendall in Oakland. We could have gotten him for the ML Minimum and used the excess dough for a lefty reliever. I'm still missing Arthur Rhoades!

Melhuse hasn't had an OPS above .666 since 2004. Rabelo is better than Melhuse at this point.

Actually guys, if you look upthread, I was only quoting Marlins2003 and putting in my feelings about this trade. It really isn't an upgrade, but it does tell you how poorly they think of Rabelo at this point. He might as well find another line of work, because MLB baseball is not for him.
March 29, 200917 yr Author Paulino is club controlled and making a hair above the minimum. Melhuse hasn't had an OPS above .666 since 2004. Rabelo is better than Melhuse at this point. And of course this the real reason we got him. Because Loria is just too cheap. He must go. Or the fact his career .915 OPS vs left handed pitching would have been the 6th best catcher vs lefties in 2007, and tied for the 7th best catcher vs lefties in 2008. The other names in front of him during these various years - Mauer, Soto, Napoli, Shoppach, Martin, Martinez, Ianetta, Posada, Inge, and the only other two in the same offensive balllpark, Toby Hall and Josh Bard, both will be playing for the minimum as well. Basically, the Marlins could have spent all the money in the world to provide a more expensive backup to Baker than Paulino, but they would not have found anyone who hits lefties (the # 1 priority for our backup catcher) as hard as Paulino does. Not the Marlins problem they got lucky and a CC player is seemingly the best fit for us. It's just a good match. Please post cheap comments in BULLPEN threads, where we keep DFAing relievers, and won't go out and get an established reliever in Ohman we desperately need, because we want to save an extra million dollars when we are the lowest payroll in baseball.
March 29, 200917 yr He's a backup, who fits well into the Marlins current situation. Gosh...some people find reasons to complain for no reason. This is a solid move. Great, actually.
