March 28, 200917 yr Phillies get RP J. Transchner from SF for Catcher Paulino, than SF traded Paulino to the fish for P H. Correa! Talk about sneaky.
March 28, 200917 yr Wow, as Lou posted: Baker vs RHP .327/.417/.487 (.904) Paulino vs LHP .355/.417/.498 (.915) Marlins catchers 2008 (and this includes Baker) .251/.323/.340 (.664) That should be a big boost. Sounds like a great platoon setup. Wish they picked him up sooner so he'd have a whole spring to get comfy with our pitchers but I won't be picky. Hopefully he'll keep his weight under control this season.
March 28, 200917 yr More Rotoworld. And they shockingly get it right for once. Baker vs RHP .327/.417/.487 (.904) Paulino vs LHP .355/.417/.498 (.915) Marlins catchers 2008 (and this includes Baker) .251/.323/.340 (.664) These guys are going to sleepwalk a 100 OPS upgrade over 600 PA. Let alone their potential to do some serious damage on top of that. I think I just dumped my trunks... that's so awesome... About how I feel. Last June, would you have ever believed that the Marlins catchers would have the potential to OPS over .800 in 2009? This move gives us a real chance to be at or near the top of the league in catcher OPS, which was .839 last year by Minnesota. Wow - an extreme weakness (Treanor & Rabelo!) to practically a lock to be top-10 in the league (.768 OPS = top 10 last year). Also, if you read the press release from the team's website, it says Paulino has thrown out 51 of 165 (24%) of runners attempting to steal. These are the wrong numbers. In reality, he's thrown out 73, with 165 SB, so he's thrown out 73 of 238 runners attempting to steal (31%) which would be around league average at least, from what I can gather (can anyone clarify this?).
March 28, 200917 yr that would seem to be the case mystikol, dunno where they got 51 from. And yeah 31% is right around average. He threw out 36% in '06 and threw out 26% in '07 and '08.
March 28, 200917 yr If he can remain in good physical shape Paulino may actually be a bit better defensively than Baker I am not entirely sure of his game calling abilities but the pitchers seem to have done well on the teams he has played on. When Paulino is in the lineup the Marlins should never lose a beat offensively or defensively. I agree that if Baker avoids a sophomore slump our catching has become top 5 in the major (very least top 10)
March 28, 200917 yr Sweet!!! I was kinda dissaponted last night when I saw that sf traded for him. I figured we wouldn't get him.
March 28, 200917 yr yyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssss. i just read it on mlbrumors.com and came here. this is great news.
March 28, 200917 yr Fantastic work by Hill and Beinfest. :thumbup It's an interesting set of moves that started in Pittsburgh to Philadelphia to San Francisco to eventually Miami, a minor league catcher for a disgruntled Paulino, for a PT reliever with a nearly 5 ERA, for a not in the top 20 young minor league pitching prospect that is years from the majors. He said he wanted a shot, he got it. Let's see what he can do and how he assimilates into the organization. Certainly not the first guy on anyone's list he may just be the right guy at the right time in the right place as far the Marlins go. It's hard to ignore how the splits work out between himself and Baker. All in all it's a good get. We now have 38 on the 40 man roster and Andino is still with the team.
March 28, 200917 yr I love this move, at the moment it makes me feel better about not getting more from the Nats for Josh and Scotty but im not here to beat on that dead horse... As for Andino, as much as I like him, Ive always said he doesnt fit here barring any unusual changes, so Ive always labeled him as trade bait and this could be the year finally
March 28, 200917 yr I mentioned Andino only as it pertains to the 40 man roster and the fact we acquired at least one piece we were looking for without trading him. He may very well stick until Amezaga comes back but any day you don't have to help a division rival and you get what you were looking for without doing so has to be looked on as a good day. Paulino BTW played on the same DWL team with Bonifacio and performed pretty well there in both the regular season and their extended playoff series.
March 28, 200917 yr Ronny Paulino = Ramon Castro Which is not a bad thing by any means. Minus the whole legal thing, one would hope.

Wonder if Paulino was around... There are probably 17 waiters that can vouch for him and give a rock-solid alibi :lol I don't care about all that though, just gimme that 800-900 OPS vs LHP
March 28, 200917 yr I'm down with this move, because now that means Rabelo won't be the backup. You guys make this seem like this is a team changing trade, when in fact it is very minor. Good move nonetheless, and finally get a person who can come in that we can trust when Baker needs a couple days off.

Paulino will not be playing the majority of the games. He's a good pickup don't get me wrong, but the pickup isn't going to be the difference between making and missing the playoffs. Baker having another successful season is a lot more important than Paulino having a good season.
March 28, 200917 yr It will be intersting to see how the line up shapes up espcially with bonifacio playing his way into the line up. I imagine vs righties it will be Maybin, Baker, Hanley, Cantu, Uggla, Ross, Hermida, Bonifacio, pitcher. Lefties im not to sure about caus i dont know how well Ronny hits behind guys and if helms will get in a first and move cantu to third with bonifacio on the bench. Bonifacio is better from the left right?

He's a good pickup don't get me wrong, but the pickup isn't going to be the difference between making and missing the playoffs. Baker having another successful season is a lot more important than Paulino having a good season. The fallacy in that lies in the risk that *knock on wood* Baker goes down for an extended period of time... Career OPS+ Treanor - 70 Paulino - 86 Rabelo - 61 therein lies part of the big difference this makes... as Nny said once, most teams have a backup catcher, we just went to AAA talent/fodder. Now we have a bonafide backup catcher... that's worth a bit in the long run.
