March 5, 200917 yr Another absolutely gorgeous day for baseball at Ft. Lauderdale Stadium but unfortunately, another not-so-gorgeous day on the field for the Marlins. Things started out good. That first run was all Andino, who worked a 12 pitch AB after Maybin's double, fouling off at least 6 pitches then finally grounding one to first to move the runner to third for a sac fly RBI for Jeremy. He also played well defensively all day. I wish this guy had a place on this team. Uggla's errors were bad. Really bad. Both were routine plays that should have gotten Andrew Miller out of an inning but instead led to runs. Gaby's was a tougher play as he had to flip the ball to Miller running to cover first but still a play he should have made, especially for a guy who won awards for his defense in the minors. 3 errors in 2 1/2 innings. Puke. Miller was off even with his warm-up tosses in the pen. Most of his pitches missed up in the zone. He even hit one batter in the head. Still, he pitched effectively enough to stay out of trouble. Unfortunately, the defense (Uggla) wasn't having any of that. He was forced to throw at least 25 pitches in the 1st when he should have only had to throw 12, tops Sanchez wasn't untouchable by any means but threw well in his most extensive action of the spring so far. There was one defensive highlight on the day. Scott Cousins who got a start (Cody DH'd) threw an absolute laser beam from semi-deep right to nail a runner who was tagging up at the plate. Hit the catcher right in the chest. Other points of interest: Beinfest, Samson, and Conine were all there. Conine was in uniform and was really involved in BP. Read what you want into that.

I think Andy Fox's days or Uggla's days as a Marlin are numbered. Maybe both This is a case of you can't turn a sow's ear into silk. Uggla is what he is, the Marlins infielders are what they are. You have 3 years of stats.....stats that say they are defensively challenged to say the least. Now is the time to go younger again......its not like it will hurt attendance, and at least if Coughlin screws up there is a built in excuse for it.
March 5, 200917 yr I know its March, but can they at least get the damn routine plays straight? Andy Fox is beyond horrible, hell a little league coach could probably teach better infield fundamentals.

Andy Fox is beyond horrible, hell a little league coach could probably teach better infield fundamentals. He was a favorite of mine when he played, but his coaching is either awful, or the players are just well below average defensive players. I guess after all there was a reason why the D'Backs left Uggla in the Rule 5 Draft.
March 5, 200917 yr I was there as well.... These errors are terrible! Im going to pull a page out of Beinfest's book and say that I dont care if its spring!!! These are routine f***ing plays!

Andy Fox was a dime a dozen, a decent utility player who obviously doesnt know the first thing about coaching infield defense. I thought this was a results oriented business. If one of your main tasks is a miserable failure, how do you keep your job?
March 5, 200917 yr Author Another thing... The second error Uggla made was on a routine double play toss at second. He dropped the ball. Later on in the game, Coghlan made a perfect throw to first despite being wiped out at second by the runner. Just found it ironic.
March 5, 200917 yr I just hope they can get all of the errors out of them before the regular season. Let's all keep our fingers crossed.
March 5, 200917 yr Uggla doesnt get down on the ball either... He just lollygags! atleast he did today
March 5, 200917 yr I know its March, but can they at least get the damn routine plays straight? Andy Fox is beyond horrible, hell a little league coach could probably teach better infield fundamentals. How could anyone on this forum possibly know that Andy Fox is a horrible defensive coach? How do you know what kind of fundamentals he preaches? Are you a member of the Marlins FO? There's only so many groundballs you can hit to a guy before you realize its not making a difference. This is exactly like firing a manager when a team is losing. Its a very annoying misconception when people don't understand that sometimes the PLAYERS are responsible for their flaws.

I'm glad somebody finally said it. To me, an infield coach works on positioning and mechanics and things of that nature. When Dan Uggla is making errors on routine balls and things of the like, I can't see blaming the IF coach. Still, something's gotta give.

I agree, I liked Andy as a player, but he's a coach now, and I think this was one area the Marlins screwed up on, not upgrading and bringing in a real infield coach.

Its a very annoying misconception when people don't understand that sometimes the PLAYERS are responsible for their flaws. because the statistics back it up. I mean whats the point of having coaches if its all on the players anyway? I mean just throw them out there and go from there. Why have spring training at all for that matter, its all on the players anyway. I mean hell teams fire hitting coaches all the time because the overall runs produced is in the toilet. Pitching coaches too. You would think the same would apply to infield coaches. You cant fire the players so you have to fire the coaches, send a message and hope that a different voice will produce better results.
March 6, 200917 yr I think one of the reasons were seeign some many errors on routine plays is guys arent as focused cause its ST. Im not saying their out there just effing around but they sure arnet losing sleep like they might in the reg season over errors. Im hoping they can filp that so called switch when the season starts. How can some of you guys rip fox he can only do so much. These guys are all big league ball players and they know fundamentals if they didnt they wouldent be here. When hill was here he had D lee, Loui, Gonzalez and lowell, I could looked good as the inf coach with those guys.

How'd his new delivery look? I was wondering the same thing. Also curious how Davis looked behind the plate. With Miller working on that new delivery they had to know he was going to be all over the place. Did Davis handle the wildness okay? And if he did that may be a reason he started instead of Baker.

I don't know what a coach can do to make a 29 year old player throw or catch the ball better, at that point it's on the player... These are routine plays that should be made and no amount or quality of coaching is going to help. Yet still... I think Andy's days are numbered. Just not sure how high that number is. As for the tone of this thread... We lost a game and the kiddies are throwing a tantrum, with the biggest pessimistic antagonist leading them along. It appears the posters are out of ST mode already.
March 6, 200917 yr 162 losses this year. im calling it now jajajaja GOOD 1, I dont think that was even possible in nintendo games :lol
March 6, 200917 yr 162 losses this year. im calling it now jajajaja GOOD 1, I dont think that was even possible in nintendo games :lol haha one time i won 11 games. and got fired. i simed the season haha but anyways.. if a player cannot make a regular play it is his concentration, means he needs to focus more keep his eye on the ball. im guessing uggla blanks out in the field because now and then you will see him make a play that you didnt know he could make, then he will make the worst error possible.
March 6, 200917 yr haha one time i won 11 games. and got fired. i simed the season haha 4 real son??? :lol thats a good 1.

March 6, 200917 yr I'm sure lack of focus and rust have nothing to do with it. Then tell me why they are once again leading MLB in errors ? Many of them came into camp in January to work extra, and they still suck. A spade is a spade, a bad defense man is a bad defense man in MLB. And this year the bats are silent.....this could be a less than 60 win season. :banghead
