I'm sure lack of focus and rust have nothing to do with it.

Then tell me why they are once again leading MLB in errors ? Many of them came into camp in January to work extra, and they still suck. A spade is a spade, a bad defense man is a bad defense man in MLB. And this year the bats are silent.....this could be a less than 60 win season. :banghead

:lol

6 Spring Training games, is it? SPRING...TRAINING being the key words.

Like, when was Dan Uggla ever this bad defensively when it counted last year? Why was Gaby Sanchez complimented for his defense in AA when it counted last year?

60 win season? Get a clue.

We won 84 last year with the likes of Mark "Too-Tall" Hendrickson, Rick Vanden Hurk, Eulogio De La Cruz, and Burke Badenhop getting significant time in the starting rotation.

This year's team has a more healthy pitching staff coming in, and better defense. Just give it time. We got rid of one of the worst defensive players in baseball already who increased each infielders' error total last year.

Just calm down and take Spring Training for what it really is.

hi guys,

my first post here, so first off, hello!

Now, with all these discussions of whether spring training really matters, I was wondering if anyone had anyone recalled how the fish did last year during spring training?

I was wondering the same thing but i dont think they keep those stats.

What bothers me about how they look is that everyone knew going in to this season that defense was going to be stressed so at least mentally they should be prepared, but instead we see lack of focus and poor discipline. I know its early but I don't think we can win the division with a bunch of mental midgets. It pisses me off to see Uggla goofing off after he won his arbitration case and gott his fat raise. It looks bad. I don't think Beinfest has a lot of patience for it either so I would bet we'll see some dealing before opening day if things don't start to improve.

2008 Spring Training Stats - http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/springStats?...a&year=2008

2008 Spring Record was 19-11-3

I got to sit a couple of seats away from Samson....holy crap thats a big championship ring. Ive never seen a championship ring before...

He looked at me as i was staring at it and i gave him a wave and he waved back.

He didnt look to happy as he was watching the game...

I guess after all there was a reason why the D'Backs left Uggla in the Rule 5 Draft.

He was a Rule 5 guy because he wasn't hitting nearly as well in the minors as he does up here. It had nothing to do with defense.

Didn't we have the best record in Grapefruit in 2007?

Why? Was he missing out on an important movie?

My career isn't movie related either, can I not be a movie buff?

Actually, his career is movie related.

That's why the weasel talks 10x more about movies than he does about the Marlins, on the LeBatard Show, when he appears.

The only reason Samson has a baseball-related job is b/c of Jeffrey Loria.

All the weasel does is critique movies and complain when other teams sign ballplayers, in a really annoying manner. As if the other teams don't have that right.

Samson really does look like a weasel.

I was looking at him and thinking....thats it?

this is one of the marlins top dogs in the FO?

God help us...

Ive heard fredi many times on radio interviews saying day in and day out Dan works harder than anyone in camp.

Also I think alot of people forget not everyone lives in Fl or in a warm climate so going to the field and taking balls off the bat isnt always an option. In the offseason lots of guys go to the gym and work out, go to the filed and throw or in a gym, and hit at indoor cages. Fielding gets over looked. If by the last week of ST we still are making 3 errors a game ill worry a little.

Samson is not on the baseball side of the front office.

i think he chooses the movies that they play on the flights.

Thank you Lou but wheres the fielding stats?

Samson is not on the baseball side of the front office.

i know that, What i meant was that he still is a top dog in the FO.

I mean IMO his job plays a big role, and i think i rather have someone else doing it.

but i dont know, maybe i flat out just dont like the guy.

We won 84 last year with the likes of Mark "Too-Tall" Hendrickson, Rick Vanden Hurk, Eulogio De La Cruz, and Burke Badenhop getting significant time in the starting rotation.

Umm...What?

Total Starts in 2008:

Henrickson - 19

Vanden Hurk - 4

De La Cruz - 1

Badenhop - 8

32 starts combined or maybe a full season for one pitcher. Explain to me how they each had 'significant' time in the rotation last year.....

I'll give you Hendrickson. I could 'maybe' give you Badenhop if you want to really get liberal with the term significant. But VandenHurk and De La Cruz.... :lol :lol

He meant the cumulation of all of them for significant time. And he's right. Tucker also had 6 starts, so it's more like 38 starts from "the backup starters." 38 starts is a lot when you have around a 6.50+ era from that group of pitchers last year. If the back end of our rotation throws 5 eras this year as opposed to the crap last year, we're shaving 25-30 runs off instantly. Let alone if they actually pitch good and can get into the low 4 eras.

Further, add in Miller with another 20 starts and Anibal 10 starts of a high 5.50 era, and the Marlins had almost 70 starts last year from a group of pitchers with over a 6 ERA. That is a pretty big deal when you consider the Marlins legitimately achieved their record with a positive run differential. There is a lot of room for improvement here.

How is 30+ games not significant? And as Lou said...I forgot Tucker, as well.

I think he meant the cohesive unit having significant time. Also, you might as well add Ryan Tucker's 6 in there.

Don't forget the negative impact those [typically] short starts had on the bullpen.

Plus improved defense (ST is ST, Im not worried) and an offense that should be as good... this should be a very good team.

So I'm supposed to guess at meaning, when thats not what was stated. It was stated that these 4 received significant starts. Henrickson received significant starts. The rest didnt. Period. I can only go by what was stated.
