Lots of Marlins Coverage on ESPN First Take

Wow, they are getting a ton of attention. They spent most of the first 30 minutes of the show talking about this team, and there's more to come. Cody Ross will be interviewed soon. Tune in or watch a rerun later!

Jemele Hill and Skip Bayless both agreed that this team is legit.

Skip gives them a 60% chance of making the playoffs; Jemele says 45%.

Both of them mentioned our defense, which IMO has been pretty solid, but I would agree with Jemele that there may be growing pains with EB learning 3rd base on the fly.

The one laugher was Jemele urging us to recall how the Marlins had hot starts both times they won the World Series (she may or may not have sad "hot Aprils")

See 2003: 2-6; 6-9; 14-15 after April; 19-29 before starting that stretch where we had the best record in baseball.

I find it best not to watch espn, I recommend the MLB channel for serious coverage of the Marlins

As Uecker would say, bingo!

All I know is that it has been quite some time since the Marlins have been on SC as early as they have in the daily broadcasts...

Last night I was watching a bit during the rain out of the Cubs game and they mentioned how great we're playing, but of course, they took the time to mention our attendance.

It's actually been pretty bad.

Team UZR is 22nd in MLB. It's a small sample though, and it has not hurt us (obviously). It will get better.

Also, Mr. 3000 :cool

It's actually on right now again if anyone is interested. They are talking about the Magic and Hornets first, then Marlins.

Well, 08 started with the Mets as opposed to the Nats, which kinda cost us a high attendance game. People will show up to Opening Day regardless.

yep whenever they mention the marlins are good they have to say something dumb like "well we know theyre good now its time for ppl in miami to figure it out and watch them"

This doesn't quite bother me as much. This is more like encouraging fans to go watch a team because they are putting a great product on the field. It's been a lot better than the typical bashing lately.

Forgive me, I must be missing your point...attendance is up in 2009 over 2008 by around 35,000+ attendees.

He's saying that the opening day game will draw a lot of fans regardless of who the marlins play.

The first weekend series was Pittsburgh last season, one of the worst draws. This season it was the mets, who draw well. It is not a surprise that attendance is up after 6 games, based on who the marlins played.

Saying the Marlins are 35,000+ fans better really doesn't mean much at this point. Now if attendance stays up after another home stand or two, it becomes relevant.

Yeah, maybe I wasn't clear enough. By having the Mets doing Opening Day in 2008, we lost a big attendance game. People will show up to Opening Day regardless, we don't need the Mets for that.

Having a low attendance team (like the Nats) on Opening Day and a high attendance team (like the Mets) separated gave us an extra high attendance game gives us that extra 35,000.

Well, extra 20,000ish. The early signs are encouraging. But they are not going to have artists as popular Pitbull/Flo Rida/DJ Laz every Super Saturday. I know at least a few people who went almost entirely for the act, while the baseball game was seemingly just a once-in-a-long-while novelty.

Well, yeah... Gimmie a break sir!

Seriously though, it's also mentioning just how bad a draw the Pirates are, giving us a Super Saturday crowd of 15,752, the lowest of the year, way lower than the 25,294 Super Saturday average.

Exactly. I sincerely doubt we'll draw +30,000 for the Village People, although I suspect they're due for a comeback any day now.

I'd say the previous season had a lot to do with it aswell.

'07 we were horrible and we just traded our best hitter and our 'ace'. '08 we were good and showed a lot of promise.

Well, this is an organic cause for the attendance spike though, which would be what we are going for. I think we're just trying to identify potential influences which are independent of fans typical interest in the Marlins so that we may begin to draw some inferences as to the attendance for the rest of the season.

Rab - break both well-earned and given :thumbup

Well maybe at that point 30,000 people will come out to see the Marlins...

Rab's touching on a good point. Having the Mets for a week end series is going to draw more than having them for a week day series.

Please. No more. That crowd was terrible in behavior. By fans of both teams. Made alot of us think that if you are under 21 you should be accompanied by an adult. Just ask the security personnel.
