dude, the original poster is right. The guy is an excellent hitter but once he gets on base, he's retarded. You can tell that he plays the game with a "take it or leave it" attitude and that attitude is there with or without an injury.

Hanley not hustling prevented us from getting the 4th run of the game. With a 4-0 lead and Nunez pitching the way he did in the 8th inning, I would imaging that Fredi would have left Nunez in the game for the 9th. And right now, I would take my chances with Nunez over Lind in the 9th.

 

Not saying that Nunez would have garunteed the victory but Hanley not having his head in the game did cost us at least one run and the perception of how to handle the 8th and 9th innings for Fredi.

Hanley will have his moments of awesomeness but his approach to the game sucks right now. The only time he's shown any fire this year is when they told him to cut his hair.

His approach to the game is not sound, IMO. Particularly on defense. He lacks fundamentals. His talent causes him to make some flashy plays but he is not consistent because of his lazy approach to playing ground balls and [sometimes] covering a large range.

To stir the pot (because what else is there to do?), is this an organizational problem? A problem of the perception of our organization? Because our last big name player, Cabrera, started to slack off a little when his fate was assured (that he was playing himself out of Florida). Is it a problem that we take these young players, thrust them in the spotlight, they have such talent that they shine, but because we are a small market team, they become the only star and start to coast, because either thinking they will soon land a big contract outta here or there is no need to play hard because they've been fed these lines of them being the only great player on the team?

Bad comparison, IMO. Miggy was always a slacker. Remember in '03 or '04 when the veterans had to take him aside for a "conference" after his soccer practice during pregame workouts and his comments when he came in late? And the "BLEEP the veterans" comment. Miggy always had a huge ego. Going to a team with alot of veterans was a good thng for him. And being moved to 1B, but that's another story.

 

Hanley could be developing that huge ego as well. It's up to the coaching staff to keep it in check. Of course maybe dropping a hint that he could be traded to the "Natinals" should he not start acting like a team player couldn't hurt either.

 

He's young. Young players go through this. I remember when Gonzo got the call up and after a bit his head also started to swell. He settled down.
