Posted May 9, 200916 yr From Frisaro's blog: Jeremy Hermida was back in familiar territory on Friday night. Chances are, he will stay there for a while. Hermida made his first start of the season in right field in the series opener with the Rockies. The switch is being made to create playing time for prospect Chris Coghlan, who was promoted from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday. The player most impacted by the series of moves is Cameron Maybin. While Maybin is still with the big league club, the Marlins like for their young players to play. So it seems that the 22-year-old will be optioned to the Minor Leagues -- probably Triple-A -- when the club decides on what to do about Anibal Sanchez's replacement in the rotation. That decision needs to be made by Tuesday. Coghlan started at second base and he batted second on Friday night, giving Dan Uggla a day off. Cody Ross was in center on Friday, and Alfredo Amezaga was in left field. Before the season started, the Marlins moved Hermida to left field and slotted Ross in right field to help improve the defense. Yet, the offense has struggled as Maybin -- and he certainly isn't alone -- is off to a slow start. So look for Maybin to be sent down to get regular playing time as he continues his development. Coghlan was called up to play, not sit the bench, so the team will give him a look. A first round pick in 2006, Coghlan is a left-handed hitter who can hit at the top of the order -- either first or second. With New Orleans, he was batting third, but power isn't a big part of his game. Coghlan got a start in left field for New Orleans on Thursday. He's played mostly second and third since being drafted. Coghlan also is a contact hitter, and for a team that leads the league in strikeouts, that is a welcomed addition. He also had good speed. Adding Coghlan also gives more balance to the Marlins offense, which on Friday had four lefty bats, when you include the switch-hitting Emilio Bonifacio. Coghlan, John Baker and Hermida are left-handed bats. http://joefrisaro.mlblogs.com/
May 9, 200916 yr Is it just me or has: 1) this game not started yet and 2) it's been reported by the Miami Herald blog that Hermida is in LF today?
May 9, 200916 yr Is it just me or has: 1) this game not started yet and 2) it's been reported by the Miami Herald blog that Hermida is in LF today? I see Herms in LF according to game day as well.
May 9, 200916 yr Is it just me or does it seem more likely that an IF would be on the verge of being sent down if an IF was called up.
May 9, 200916 yr Is it just me or has: 1) this game not started yet and 2) it's been reported by the Miami Herald blog that Hermida is in LF today? Yeah, that article was wrong. Hermida's in LF, Cody in RF, Amezaga in CF.
May 9, 200916 yr correct me if im wrong but it seems that the Marlins are starting to dig them self into a hole.
May 9, 200916 yr correct me if im wrong but it seems that the Marlins are starting to dig them self into a hole. Not until we get past the mound of dirt, sir.
May 9, 200916 yr i expected more from him.....i guess he's not ready....maybe we bring him back and he will do better in the near future
May 9, 200916 yr It was bound to happen. Just needs to fix some mechanics, lets see what Coughlan can do. More importantly, it seems we have a need to go out and get some sort of insurance pitcher for both Miller and Sanchez, as well as at the deadline trade for some relief help. I still feel that we should spend that $3 million to get Pedro Martinez at this point. I know its not the smartest investment money wise, but it will simply be a contract just until the end of the season.
May 9, 200916 yr Fredi just mentioned putting Chris in the outfield. He also mentioned that "Danny is our second baseman".
May 9, 200916 yr And the laughable part about Maybin being sent down is the fact that Bonifacio would probably still be in the lineup(and leading off).

Pedro at this point adds some needed depth, and can be a serviceable 4.50 ERA kind of guy with a good K number. And would give us some more time to give Miller to develop, just for the season. I don't think Miller is quite ready for the majors, really.

Not that I agree he should be in the lineup, just trying to put some rational into the decision. I keep hearing about these better swings Bonifacio has been putting up, but really...what is the rational behind this stance? His "better swings" over the past 2 weeks(14 games, 63 at bats) has got him a .190/.261/.206 line with 16 Ks. So what you are saying is that Bonifacio has looked more comfortable while being awful at the plate.

I'm not saying its a good rational, but he's hitting the ball harder, and has been laying off that high fastball more than earlier in the year. Its improvement, stats don't always indicate that kind of improvement, that may come over time.
May 9, 200916 yr This is good news. It looks like Coughlan will get a real shot and Maybin goes where he belongs.

Yes his numbers haven't improved drastically, I agree with that. And I think he should be out of the lineup, just stating his plate discipline as well as his swing has improved over the last month.

He had a much better ERA the previous season, which of course only lasted a month. We can get that from Badenhop.

Pedro will go 5 IP per start IF WE'RE LUCKY while putting up a 5+ ERA If we're using a 5 ERA guy, he needs to be able to at least eat innings. Byrd is a good candidate, but is asking for too much (3m. If we can get him for 1m, cool). Badenhop is actually a good candidate, and I have some faith in him to be upper 4.
