Face it, the Nationals have more holes then a 1st round pick can plug.

Lets ask 3 basic questions.

1) Do you think the Marlins can trade for the 1st overall pick?

2) Do you think the Marlins should look into attaining Startsburgs services?

3) What would be a fair deal, using current players in our organization>

Let me know what you guys think.

I personally think someone who can be a Ace like him should definatly be looked into. If only the Marlins were not afraid to meet his contract demands and the Nationals "Ransom of Happy Youngster proportions".

You are not allowed to trade draft picks in MLB.

You can trade the rights to a draft pick in MLB right? I figured you couldnt trade picks (which i never said). Everything was asked in a draft and trade scenario (ala ELI Manning in Football).

Damn my overworked brain and Corona's tho.

It's very simple, you can't trade draft picks in the amateur draft AND you can't trade them for a year either. This is not football thank god.

You're perhaps confusing the amateur draft (which is coming up and is being discussed) with the Rule 5 draft of minor league ballplayers who have run out of minor league options. Those players may be traded without so much five minutes with the club that just acquired them BUT whatever team does wind up him must follow the same roster rules as if they drafted that player in the first place.

No

No

and...

NO!

Pitchers can be found anywhere in the draft... Just because hes outstanding in college doesnt mean sh*t

Didn't I hear somewhere this morning (I wasn't really paying attention, it might have been Olney on Mike&Mike) that Boris came out and said it would take $20 million to sign him. :banghead

I've heard that number BEFORE this morning, the good news (if you want to call it that) is that 20M appears to be the upper threshold, at this point.

I keep hearing how fast and hard he throws and I can't help but wonder if this is an arm that will blow itself out before too long

If I were the Nats I'd be completely dicks and be like "we have the #1 pick next year too. If you don't come down, we'll draft him again. We'll probably have the #1 pick in '11. If you don't come down, we'll draft him a third time. If he wants to play in the MLB anytime in the next several years, his price comes down." Screw what's doing what's best for the organization, it's about sending a message.

My question would be, if he goes to Japan, could they then post him? That might be a way for Harper to hurry up his ability to be drafted lol.

Worst thread I've seen since I registered on this site...without a doubt.

I've read about this draft quite a bit, and in the first round projected Strasburg seems to be the only overpowering guy out there, the rest of the pitchers that are available are said to throw low 90s MHP fastballs, with a lot of them relying more on command. One player who seems very intriguing is Jacob Turner out of Westminster Christian Academy. Turner is one of the few guys who can throw a high 90s fastball, saying to at times reach 98 MPH, but is more consistantly in the 95-96 range. He has a steep 12-6 curve that can be devastating to the hitters after seeing a 96 MPH fastball. A few problems here are that he is represented also by Boras, so doubtful we get him, Turner also lacks a 3rd pitch and will need to be taught it during his time in the minors, his control has been a minor issue, but not a huge issue. The biggest issue would be trying to lure him away from going to UNC. He would be a risk to draft.

Another pitcher that I am intrigued by is Mike Minor out of Vanderbilt. He is not overpowering, throws a 88-92 MPH fastball. But Minor is one of the best command pitchers out there in this years draft. He hits corners with ease, as well as has a variety of pitches to work with. He has an 11-5 curveball that doesn't have great movement, but it has been good in bits and pieces, needs retooling in the minors. His best secondary pitch is his changeup. It has some nasty movement (from what I've seen in videos), and that changeup reminds me of a typical Cole Hamels changeup.

Minor's mechanics are picture perfect right now, so it will be more of working on making his curveball more effective during his time in the minors. If he is available, I would love to see the marlins draft Minor, who is projected to go #19 to the Cardinals.

I was secretly hoping Hermida and Uggla were on their way to Washington.

So you'd trade a good .OBP guy in Hermida + 1 of the best 2B in baseball for Strasburg who hasn't thrown a pitch in the minor leagues (not to mention, the big leagues).

Silly.

Shelby Miller is not dropping past the Braves at #7. His best case scenario is #4 to the Pirates, but there is no way in hell Miller drops to #18, he'll already be in the VIP lounge by then. Especially since Miller isn't signed by Boras and isn't asking for unreasonable cash.

Miller is another pitcher that generally throws in the low 90s, with a slider and a changeup being his main secondary pitches.

He doesn't have the best of command over his curveball, which also doesn't have the greatest of movement to it, but he will probably not be using it much in the minors.

His slider is his best pitch. throws it in the high 80s, which also has some great late bite on it. Could be a deadly weapon for him.

His changeup is also another work in progress. It isn't anywhere near the changeup Minor has, and probably won't be the greatest of pitches in the majors, but with the right teachings in the minors he can make it a serviceable 3rd pitch behind his fastball and slider.

His mechanics have also been under scrutiny, he has a 3/4 delivery with his pitch, and he tends to not follow the same 3/4 delivery after every pitch. Needs coaches to help him keep the same consistant arm movement from time to time. But the pitches are generally around the same area pitch after pitch, so not a huge worry.

Overall, still would rather have Minor.

Miller has been throwing in the high 90s his senior year and has a nasty 12-6 curve and no changeup to speak of(he throws one a game, if that).

his 12-6 curveball never stays low in the zone, and if he ever keeps it low in the zone, it ends up bouncing in the dirt every time. Miller needs more work than Minor would need.

and last time I heard of Miller, he was topping out at 95, throwing 92-93 regularly on the gun.
