June 23, 200917 yr Nunez? Seriously? He's been just as bad lately. He's had a much better year. So? We're talking about our closer, and people automatically mention Nunez. He's probably one of the worst choices right now. 3.58 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 29 K's in 32.2 innings. .202 opponents batting average; .621 .OPS against. I see what you're saying now... What's your point to this thread Erick? Everybody who reads on this forum has heard read your comments about Lindstrom; seriously what are you trying to prove with this? Everyone who follows the Marlins knows that he has been bad. We know that, what else is there to talk about unless you are bobbob1313 and his fettish with "magical abilities."
June 23, 200917 yr Lets plug Josh Johnson as closer. I'm not sure every manager would catch him reentering his own games.
June 23, 200917 yr Lindstrom has been bad, but we are winning with him as our closer. Keep him as our closer. If he implodes, say blows 2 or 3 straight saves, remove him. If he improves and pitches very well, we have our closer.
June 23, 200917 yr Author It is quite evident that Nunez is just a better pitcher than Lindstrom right now. Untill Lindstrom gains command of a second pitch he is not going to be a very effective closer. He doesnt have good enough command of his fastball to be a one pitch guy.
June 23, 200917 yr What options do we have? Keep Leo in set-up role and trade for a trustworthy closer before trade deadline? Demote Lindstrom in the pen, keep Nunez at set-up role and do a committee of Calero/Meyer? Let's just put Calero in the closers role, oh wait he's on the DL with a sore shoulder.

June 23, 200917 yr Author Give Nunez an opportunity to close and there will be competition for the setup role amongst Calero, Lindstrom, Meyer etc. (whoever pitches well enough to earn the role)

No sh*t, when he's off the DL I have no idea. He is our best reliever but he does us absolutely no good on the DL.

I was just frustrated because Lindstrom is under-achieving this year. A lot of people expected him to be pretty good this year, and he has been pretty bad if you look at his stats other than saves and opportunities.
June 23, 200917 yr The bullpen hierarchy is fine. I hate splitsing out major events, but if you take out the epic Philly meltdown and the one bad game (non closing situation) in Tampa, Lindstrom has this line. 27.1 IP, 2.30 era, 1.46 whip (24 H, 16 BB), 0 HR, 7.9 K/9 Yes, the walks are atrocious, but those two games are epicly making his season line look bad. (Great for pending arbitration though!) Lindstrom does a great job not giving up HR/XBH which keeps his era down. He is/can be a very effective as a mid 1.30 whip pitcher (like last year). We're talking a couple of walks here and everything is literally fine. Lindstrom Nunez-Meyer Pinto Sanches Badenhop Wood Not a big deal. Hopefully Calero comes back strong. And who said Nunez sucks lately? He's given up runs once in June, and his last four outings against the AL East have been 3.1 innings, 0 R, 3 base runners. Sanches has only given up 1 run in 15 innings, with a 1.33 whip. Even Badenhop is at a really respectable 1.37 whip and looks real good in long relief. We're in pretty good shape here as long as no one else gets hurt. Don't forget Vanden Hurk is lurking, and Anibal is back from injury soon and who knows where he ends up if West keeps throwing well. How about we bitch about no one on the team besides Hanley and Gload having an OPS over .800. Uggla, Hermida, or Cantu needs to step up real soon and be that big time # 2 guy in our lineup. Or, how about our starting 3B is the worst positional starter in baseball.

Especially talking about taking out the Philly melt down and one other bad outing. I've already tried to explain this in recent posts but people are too stupid to realize that the situation is not that bad yet. The only thing that is hurt are Lindstrom's numbers and fans expectations. The team is winning and that's what is important. We should start a thread about Uggla and how he is hitting .215 (?) and has looked really bad defensively. He hits homeruns, once in awhile, and his situational hitting is atrocious. IMO he has hurt the team more with his bat than Lindstrom has by blowing 2 saves this year.
June 23, 200917 yr Im just have ALOT more confidence in Nunez then Lindstrom If you look at the stats in save situations you shouldn't be. Lindstrom's 14/16 saves (87.5%) compared to Leo's 2/5 saves (40%). Leo's doing fine in the Set up role so why would you move him and Matt is getting the job done so why would you move him. It would be a completely different story if Lindstrom had blown 5 or 6 saves though. Talk about a horrible way to compare the two. This "getting the job done" argument holds about as much validity as Bonifacio's longterm potential. Leo Nunez has been the better pitcher in absolutely every way. His save percentage indicates absolutely nothing. The same can be said for Lindstrom. Theoretically, a guy with an ERA of 18 could have a perfect save percentage but not every opportunity comes with a three run cushion. There is certainly a "luck" factor that has played a role in Lindstrom's percentage. Expecting his current conversion rate to sustain over the course of the season with his current numbers would be unfounded and improbable. That's not to say he can't improve and manage a decent percentage, but it won't happen with a WHIP of 1.80 and an ERA around 5. You might find some exceptions if you look hard enough, but I doubt there have been many closers with a conversion rate in the 80 percentile and a WHIP north of 1.60 (over the course of an entire season).

I'll keep on supporting him, unless of course he stinks it up. Which I hope he doesn't.

Or, how about our starting 3B is the worst positional starter in baseball. Well, to some, it doesn't work like that. It's just being realistic. Those are MAJOR outliers to his typical performance, and a reliever sample size is always skewed for a truly horrific performance. If he gives up 2 runs in each of those appearances to blow a game versus 7 against Philly, with the only 2 HR he's given up all year in that one game, that is drastically effecting the season line and absolutely no one is complaining about him. He is just unlucky because when he has been bad this season, he's been EPICLY-bad, not just normal-bad. Don't be confused into thinking I am happy with Lindstrom's performance, but he probably feels the same way. The problem is he needs to stop walking people. Everything else is fine. He just had an epic meltdown, and one really bad outing in Tampa. It's hard to ignore them, but the rest of the season besides those 2 games he has been more than solid.

Even when you take away those 2 outings...a 1.46 WHIP isn't anywhere near impressive to say "oh, he'll be fine...it's just 2 bad outings!"

June 24, 200917 yr The "funny" thing is I think Sanches is the one that would get the blown save if the Orioles win.
June 24, 200917 yr Not gonna lie, Lindstrom did blow this game. But, it wasn't only him. Wanna know how overrated the save/blown save statistic is? Tonight's blown save goes to Brian Sanches, while Lindstrom who pitched like sh*t gets nothing, but a higher ERA. I'm sure people will continue using that to defend him, though. Perhaps we should take this outing away as well so his #'s could look a little better...lol. What's his WHIP at now? Pretty f***ing close to 2. But hey...lets continue running him out there. You would think a closer could close a 3 run lead. Then again, he's not a closer. A closer also cleans up his own mess. Fredi didn't even have confidence in him for that tonight. Pathetic. No one should be defending this guy. He's pitched as terrible as Bonifacio has played.
