If we were to trade for Micah Owings or Carlos Zambrano and play them at third base, our offense would improve.

I'm willing to bet that our defense wouldn't suffer too badly either.

Oh, but we would lose "speed" which is incredibly important, even for a terrible baserunner.

Micah Owings: .234/.245/.532 OPS .777

Carlos Zambrano: .217/.234/.457 OPS .691

Emilio Bonifacio: .252/.297/.316 OPS .613

This is obviously tongue in cheek, but I think it shows how ridiculous it is to play a guy who hits like a pitcher everyday on a team with playoff aspirations.

To be fair, he's not terrible, defensively. And he's not playing his position, either.

But yeah, the infatuation they have with this guy is getting pretty comical, at this point. He's playing LF tonight.

I could understand not being familiar with a position and making a few errors but he is tied for the league lead in errors.

I just don't understand it, he can make some fantastic plays look easy but he makes routine plays look so difficult.

That's b/c his range is fine, but he doesn't have the arm of a 3B. He's a 2B.

Your absolutely right.

Here's a little side stat.

Bonifacio has played 16 and 1/3 Innings in the OF and has yet to record an out.

I thought that was a little interesting.

He was an outfielder pretty much all of Winter Ball in Licey. I think he'll do better in the OF than at 3B, for some reason.

because he cant do much worse

Bonifacio actually has an excellent arm even as a third basemen. Sure his defense can improve, but it's mainly due to his inexperience at a new position.

Are you kidding? His arm is by far his biggest problem at 3B. He doesn't have a good arm at all.

Not to mention the fact that he is apparently afraid of fly balls.

That would have been a tough play to catch that, maybe diving. When you have his experience there, you gotta stay back on those.

I'd rather have an aggressive guy in the IF, and there are several times I wish he'd be more aggressive.

But i'd much rather have a passive guy in the OF. IMO you do what he did there.

Very much.

Really, the only guys I trust to go balls out after that one are Cody and Brett.

You can't deny the entertainment factor though, like every time Hermida has dived at a ball.

You guys don't think that ball was catchable? It seemed like he was there, but then took 2 steps back for some reason.

Im sure he was told that if he didnt feel comfortable laying out for a ball just to play it safe. Jeremy or Chris probably wouldnt have caught it themselves.

He tends to rush some throws. It's thinking like a 2B while playing 3B. He has more time to knock one down then set and throw, but previous experience kicks in and he will rush it, leading to a throwing error. It's something almost every guy that switches from middle IF to that corner does at first. Only time and experience at 3B will cure that.

Why is that? I would think you would have, on average, more time to throw as a 2B because you are closer to first????

It doesn't work that way. Balls to third base usually get to the fielder much sooner. Second base is a lot farther away and balls don't seem to be hit quite as hard there on an average basis.

Hmm, makes sense.

So this thread compares a bad hitter to two silver slugging pitchers who are some of the best all-time hitters at the position...

Whoop-dee-doo!

----------------------------------------------------------------AVG OBP SLG HR RBI

2007 Micah Owings Arizona Diamondbacks .333 .349 .683 4 15

2008 Carlos Zambrano Chicago Cubs ---------.337 .337 .554 4 14

There are lots of successful career MLB hitters who will never slug .683

To put the hitting sample size of a pitcher in perspective, Zambro failed to take a walk in 85 PA in 2008. Considering the limited looks Owings gets, and the fact that he has a season like 2007 under his belt, I would expect that many reasonably capable MLB players will often have worse numbers than Micah the boy-wonder.
