Rosenthal: Marlins after Nick Johnson

Absolutely perfect addition. Johnson replacing bonifacio in the number two spot is pure gold. really hope it happens

I agree with you. Some people need to STOP complaining this improves the offense with out giving up too much.

When was the last time we even got a big bat at the deadline?

Do Lo Duca and Encarnacion count?

That stumped me as well when I asked the question.....

Well Lo Duca hit a pinch hit 3 run home run in his first ab as a fish.

Then hit .238 to finish the season along with Encarnacion.

Nick Johnson is one of the most under-rated offensive players in the league WHEN HEALTHY. And while he isn't the bat that I have been wishing this team could acquire, he definitely approves this team assuming that Cantu moves to third upon his arrival (I don't see how the team envisions this any other way). And considering that the Nationals have absolutely no leverage in this deal, what we should have to send out should not be very much, and the Tucker & Thompson deal sounds incredibly reasonable and would not cripple us in the slightest. So in all these aspects, the deal makes a lot of sense.

With all that said, I am hoping that this organization throws everything outside of Mike Stanton at Adrian Gonzalez and tries to grab both him and Bell in a deal. The difference between Johnson and Gonzalez could very well be the playoffs or watching the Dolphins in October. And Gonzalez would be more than just a one year rental.

With the way Fredi works his lineup, Nick Johnson would probably bat 5th or 6th.

He already had a solid 2 hole hitter in John Baker and decided to send him to the 8 hole.

Also, what's up with Johnson's lack of power? Kind of scary, even though his OBP is outstanding.

Baker does posses nice two-hole skills but Johnson takes that ability to all new heights. I can't predict where Fredi would bat him but Johnson has only showed power in limited instances but he is an OBP machine, so I hope Fredi would use him as such.

Johnson would be nice but I still want Gonzalez!

I'd rather go after Nick Johnson.

UPDATED -- Marlins waiting for answer from Nats — 12:30 a.m.

The Marlins are waiting to hear if the Nationals will accept their offer for first baseman Nick Johnson, according to major-league sources.

The proposed deal would send Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker to Washington, with the Nationals paying part of the approximately $1.8 million remaining on Johnson's contract.

Jorge Cantu would move from first to third base for the Marlins. Third baseman Emilio Bonifacio would take over the injured Alfredo Amezaga's super-utility role.

The Marlins earlier made runs at Padres closer Heath Bell and even first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Blue Jays ace right-hander Roy Halladay.

In each case, however, club officials considered the acquisition cost to be too steep, sources said.

Seems like the proposed deal is for Tucker. Cantu would then move to 3rd slotting Boni into the utility role. You guys can read though.

Please let this happen baseball gods.....

Man I'm going to miss Tucker, I was hoping he would develop here. He had one of the best 2-seam fastballs I'd ever seen, great movement.

I'm a fan as well, but in the middle of a race, this is a very good deal for the Marlins to get a .400 .OBP type guy for Tucker, who pretty much projects to be a reliever, long-term.

The problem is I still think the Marlins will start Bonifacio...somewhere.

FWIW, the article says Bonifacio would become the utility man to take Amezaga's place.

Given our stable of bullpen arms and our ability to shore it up by signing Gardner/Nelson/Donnelly types, this sounds like it would be a great deal for the Marlins. While I also like Ryan Tucker, I really want to see this happen. Johnson would be huge.

What are Johnson's defensive numbers? Is he an upgraded over Cantu?

Keep dreaming.

I have a good feeling that this might happen.

I meant keep dreaming about Bonifacio not being in the 2 hole. Hes got that spot on lockdown.

If we trade for Nick Johnson, it wouldn't surprise me to see the team trade Hermida to the Cubs or something, to put Bonifacio in RF. It seems like they'd do anything to get him in the lineup.
