Rosenthal: Marlins after Nick Johnson

Featured Replies

I don't get this one.

I guess move Jorge to 3B?

The Marlins are making a strong push for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, but the teams have been unable to reach an agreement on the player the Nationals would receive in return, according to a major league source.

The Marlins have offered the Nationals a minor league pitching prospect for Johnson. Among the names under discussion: Class AA left-hander Aaron Thompson Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker. Johnson, 30, is a free agent at the end of the season. He would be a two-month rental for the Marlins at a cost of approximately $1.8 million.

This one actually makes perfect sense. Aaron Thompson is hot right now, he's been pitching tremendously in AA. His stock as a minor leaguer is at its highest. Nick Johnson when healthy is a guarantee .800+ OPS, who brings a great contact hitter who has some pop in his bat. He has a .200 OPS higher than Bonifacio. Yes moving Cantu to 3B makes our defense worse (even worse than Bonifacio), but our offense gets a whole lot better, and that kind of trade would kick start our offense immediately.

This is probably the best trade we can make this year without having to give up too much (Stanton, Miller, West, etc)

Give up thompson. I want Tucker. Lol

I have no idea why the Marlins would want a powerless bat at first base. Please don't do not pursue Nick Johnson.

who the f*** cares if he only has ok power? we need bats who are going to give us quality ab's and not k a lot and make contact and he would do just that. he could also serve as a great #2 or #5 hitter which we need desperately

i see your 400+ obp and raise you are career

1.12/1 k/bb ratio

not to mention we would be gaining power if you think about it with boni being benched

Ya, our team is packed with all or nothing bats, give me a guy who can manufacture and have a decent AB.

Oh god.

Some how I think they would find a spot for Boni.

Even then, who'd be replaced? Hermida? No power loss there.

I pray to god that if we do this deal they put Bonifacio in the utility role.

True, I just want boni in the fredo role. I guess boni's speed in the OF would help.

Remember that Bonifacio has played in left field this year.

But not well.

But I'd get to scream "CORNER OUTFIELD IS NOT 2ND BASE!" all night with Boni on one side and CC on the other.

Ha.

Absolutely perfect addition. Johnson replacing bonifacio in the number two spot is pure gold. really hope it happens
