Rosenthal: Marlins after Nick Johnson

Featured Replies

Guys, just remember how bad Cantu was at 3rd last year.

Not as if Bonifacio is Brooks Robinson over there at 3rd...which he should be, considering how much he sucks as a hitter.

Johnson at 1B, Cantu at 3B >>> Cantu at 1B, Bonifacio at 3B

Gaby will most likely be sent down again if this trade were to happen. Personally I think Boni should be the one sent down but this FO is absolutely in love with him for some apparent reason. I dont see it.

Any trade that gets Bonifacio out of the everyday lineup will be a win. Even with Cantu's defense at third, he can't possibly be any worse than EB and the offensive gains would be a massive upgrade. The fact that the team is playing as well as it has with this guy in the lineup every single day is shocking. Because they have been playing well and winning lately it has sort of masked his awfulness, but his stats post ASB are not only worse than his terrible ones pre-ASB, they are MUCH worse. His OPS is down over 160 points and that is down from what had to be one of the 3 worst OPS's from a ML stater. So they can't even say he's improving as the season goes on, he's regressing....which is actually pretty impressive that he keeps finding newer and more exciting ways to suck. Please make any trade that gets him out of the lineup!! Ok, done ranting.

Nick Johnson? Who cares? He would make no difference one way or the other. The one move that is sure to help the marlins immediately is to move Bonifacio out of the starting lineup.

not to mention we would be gaining power if you think about it with boni being benched

Some how I think they would find a spot for Boni.

Even then, who'd be replaced? Hermida? No power loss there.

No brain power loss either (especially after Tuesdays boneheadedness)

If I understand the gist of the board's reaction to Johnson, which justifiably is positive, what confuses me why people want him batting 2nd (yes, I understand he offers a high OBP) in front of Hanley but he is hardly a burner on the basepaths. I wonder if in fact we get him and he bats second will Hanley be moved down in the lineup? Or perhaps Johnson (3rd) hitting behind Hanley (2nd) to get his speed in front of Johnson's bat?

I'm not necessarily advocating one or the other or either for that matter but, and it may be that Johnson slides into the two hole and all is well, but at least for me there are alternative strategies that might be more productive.

UPDATED — Marlins waiting for answer from Nats — 12:30 a.m.

The Marlins are waiting to hear if the Nationals will accept their offer for first baseman Nick Johnson, according to major-league sources.

The proposed deal would send Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker to Washington, with the Nationals paying part of the approximately $1.8 million remaining on Johnson's contract.

Jorge Cantu would move from first to third base for the Marlins. Third baseman Emilio Bonifacio would take over the injured Alfredo Amezaga's super-utility role.

The Marlins earlier made runs at Padres closer Heath Bell and even first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Blue Jays ace right-hander Roy Halladay. In each case, however, club officials considered the acquisition cost to be too steep, sources said.

What are Johnson's defensive numbers? Is he an upgraded over Cantu?

I don't know his ratings but generally he's thought of as a very good defensive first baseman. Cantu's been pretty stable over there however, so not sure how much of an upgrade. I would think it's at least a slight one.

I'm not crazy about Cantu at 3rd but oh well...

I thought earlier the offer was Thompson AND Tucker, now it seems like it's just Tucker?

I'd rather play Gload every day at first than acquire Johnson.

Johnson has a 100 point OPS advantage.

Gload is a bench bat. Be happy you have him but don't start him everyday because he does not project as a good regular.

This would be such a steal that it's not even funny.

where would he go in the lineup? 2nd?

Hopefully they Bench Boni and do the right thing and put Johnson at 1st base batting 2nd.

That's why the Nats are going to do it. It's worth trying but if the FO doesn't give them something more reasonable when they reject it's gonna be a little disappointing. Maybe we just think the Nats owe us one for the giveaway in the offseason.

Yeah Tucker for Johnson would seemingly add a little band-aid to the horrible deal we made would the Nats last year.

If you combine the two deals and make Johnson look like the centerpiece instead of Bonifacio, it just "looks" prettier...

FLA trades OF Josh Willingam, SP Scott Olsen, RP Ryan Tucker to WAS for 1B Nick Johnson, IF Emilio Bonifacio, and 2 minor leaguers...

...lmao, nah... it still hurts a little!

I still think we should give them Gaby Sanchez as well since with Johnson on the team his chances to start went way down.

this is what bonis job should be: Pinch Run in late inning situations lol

Not a joke Ernesto. Seriously. Bonifacio should be exactly that... a late inning Pinch Runner.

Gaby Sanchez is so expendable to this organization it isn't even funny. But other teams aren't stupid and if we don't think a player is good enough to play ourselves (despite ample opportunity in the off-season and now) then other teams shouldn't consider him any more than a throw-in.

I like Nick Johnson as an addition if the Marlins use him properly. It makes no sense to go out and acquire him if Bonifacio is going to be playing third base everyday.

Cantu needs to be moved back to third base and Bonifacio to the bench. If the Marlins don't end the Bonifacio experiment, trading for Johnson makes little sense.

Also, the Marlins need to hit Johnson properly in the lineup. If they hit him anywhere other than second (before Ramirez), they minimize his effectiveness and his potential to contribute to the offense.

if we get him he is expected to bat 2nd and cantu to play 3rd

The Nationals apparently want Tucker and a prospect for Johnson

Tucker and Peterson or Cosuins for Johnson?

Why don't we just give them both Tucker and Thompson since they need the pitching badly.
