August 1, 200917 yr Kinda funny that Willingham and Johnson are being compared. We probably could have pried Willingham loose just as easily. Willingham's problem is his back, which he refuses to do anything (surgically) about, probably with good reason since surgical outcomes generally aren't good. Johnson also has been injury-prone, but only one was back-related, and that hasn't recurred for 5 years. The guy really has had some extraordinarily bad luck: 2003: stress fracture right hand (out 2.5 months) 2004: back injury (out 2 months) 2004: broken cheekbone (out 1 month, season-ending) 2005: no major injuries 2006: broken femur (out 1 week, season-ending) 2007: out entire season (femur from 2006) 2008: torn wrist ligament (out 3 months, season-ending) 2009: no major injuries Since none of Nick's injuries are recurrent or related, I'd have to go for him as opposed to Willingham, who has a history of back problems. Maybe Nick will revert to the mean and play his next 5+ seasons injury-free. Trivia: Nick is Admin Bowa's nephew. Although I agree with everything there, add in we don't need another OFer. That will be taken care of from within the org. We needed to solidify the hitting from the IFers with a bonus of a high OBP guy for the 2 slot. Something we couldn't take care of from within the org. Job well done. Knew the trivia thing. It was on the big screen during games here. I guess it still keeps the doors open for Morrison next season probably and allows easier slotting of Maybin in September
August 1, 200917 yr any quotes on what NICK said about this trade? Any articles on how he was alerted that he got traded? I want to hear what our guys said too...
August 1, 200917 yr A broken femur?! Poor guy... that just sounds awful. How on earth did it happen because thats hard to do. Anyway, we can thank the lack of any team needing a 1st baseman for this magnificent trade. A lefty, a number two hitter, an OBP machine in front of hanley, no more boner. what more can you ask for? This should really energize the team. Very excited for the last 60 games. No excuses baby.. this team is really good. If JJ and Nolasco dominate like they can, we're making ourselves a run.
August 1, 200917 yr A broken femur?! Poor guy... that just sounds awful. How on earth did it happen because thats hard to do. It was a pretty rough collision on a blooper and apparently Johnson took the brunt of it on his leg.
August 1, 200917 yr Gross... he had to of been screaming like he was being chased by an ax murder. Anyway, always liked him. Good with the glove, good teammate, smart ballplayer, Works the count. Great addition. Hope we can keep him around past this year.
August 1, 200917 yr Don't get me wrong, this deal adds a much needed boost to the lineup. However it shows how bad of a deal was the Hammer & Olsen trade. If you put Hammer's numbers with Johnson's side by side its pretty much a wash except Willingham gives you much more power. Boni has really failed in providing the "vince coleman" effect to the lineup. Welcome Nick but somehow I wish it were Welcome back hammer... Spilled milk buddy.. just can't let stuff like that bother you. Yea, hammer is having a great year and i wish he were doing it here but its behind us, nothing we can do. Win some lose some. I'd throw another cliche but im out of them.
August 1, 200917 yr Ive had a day to really think this over... and here's what i got... This trade is a good one, but, its not exactly a move that puts us in the playoffs. I hate to be negative nancy on this one, but i still, truly, cant see the marlins getting into the playoffs as much as i want them to and i really hope they do. But c'mon Nick The Stick Johnson? Thats it? Thats our ace in the hole? The guy thats injured every season? +good contact hitter -moves cantu to 3rd (better at 1b but the move is necessary) +finally gets boni out of the lineup so you see its a win but our defense is going to suffer somewhat cuz cantu cant really play 3rd. So i guess its a good move, good contact hitter, didnt really give much up, ive just never really liked Johnson and hardly ever see him since he's always injured and it wont surprise me if he's on the DL by september. :sigh: go fish

You remember when people were complaing about Hermida being injury prone back in 05-07 because he'd be hit by a pitch or someone would collide with him or he'd hurt something diving? That's basically been NJ's life. He's been unlucky but none of his injuries have been repetitive or nagging. 2) This guy has the 6th best OBP in the league. That's incredible when you consider the guy he's replacing has one of the worst in all of baseball. It's double incredible when you see he's hitting infront of the NL batting leader who's mashing with RISP and has the 5th best OBP in the league. 3) Nick Johnson has been pretty damn good defensively at 1B. He's an upgrade over Cantu. 4) Yes, Cantu hasn't been very good at 3B, but he's not exactly replacing Brooks Robinson. 5) We replaced literally the biggest whole on the team by trading a falling piece of our farm system. Look, it's fine to be worried about his injury history. Perfectly understandable. But to act as if this isn't a big deal is just wrong.
August 1, 200917 yr The trade absolutely upgrades our lineup and defense. As bad as Cantu was at 3rd base last year, having Nick Johson at 1st base will make him a better 3rd baseman, besides what we were getting defensively with Boni was horrifying. I think the batboy couldnt have been worse. If we go from the absolute worse 3rd baseman in the league to subpar then it's a huge upgrade
August 1, 200917 yr oh i know its a good move. Adding Johnson is a plus, i just dont think its a big enough move to really get us in the playoffs. But i welcome johnson and wish him nothing but the best. and im really glad we get boni out of there because, he's driving me insane (and not in a good way) And also, good point about the whole injuries/hermida thing (thats another guy i want gone, hermida!)

August 2, 200917 yr A damn fine debut for Johnson - 2 for 3 with 2 BB, 1 2B, 1 R, and 1 RBI. Welcome to the club, Nick!
August 2, 200917 yr haha everyone was calling 790 yesterday NO MORE BONIFACIO!!!! dan lebatard and stugotz were banging pots and pans from the joy. I was one of those! But after today i want to start Boni at 2B and give Uggla a couple days off to clear his mind (Like Rollins) and hopefully it works!

Well lately he doesnt deserve to be in the starting lineup and Boni does! So you sit him for a couple games and clear up well Boni is hitting good.
August 2, 200917 yr We don't even know if Hanley can play tomorrow. Boni might have to play SS. This is the reason having him on the bench is important.

Considering Bonifacio had a horrible month of July, I'm guessing "lately" = 2 AB's.

Come on.
