The Marlins aren't saying exactly what is in it other then it contains items from 1993, 1997, 2003, and 2009. Pretty cool stuff...

Marlins bury time capsule in new stadium

Memorabilia from '97, '03 World Series title teams included

08/26/09 7:11 PM ET

MIAMI -- Championship reminders and traces of the franchise's history were packaged, sealed and cemented shut at the Marlins' new ballpark on the Orange Bowl grounds on Wednesday.

A 25-pound "treasure chest," containing items from each of the Marlins' two World Series title seasons, were buried into the foundation of the team's new retractable-roof stadium, which will open in 2012.

The metal chest was placed into a wooden support on a giant concrete slad. It was sealed shut. As workers were hammering in the nails late Wednesday, rain began to fall, further demonstrating the organization's long desire for a new ballpark with a roof.

As the rain picked up, a truck poured cement over the chest and smoothed it out. The chest now rests inside one of the "super columns" in the foundation. The new park will have 12 super columns, which are the giant beams that will support the retractable roof.

"The purpose of this is so one day in 75 years, when a new ballpark is being discussed, people will be digging and excavating and they'll find this chest," Marlins president David Samson said. "In it will be a path of the Marlins' history to this point."

The team isn't revealing all the exact items now embedded in their future home.

This much, though, has been divulged:

• It contains a DVD explaining all that has been included and why.

• A copy of a local newspaper from Wednesday, Aug. 26.

• Items from the 1993 Marlins inaugural season.

• Memorabilia from the 1997 and 2003 World Series title teams.

• Items from the 2009 Marlins.

"It's got things that people will be interested in," Samson said. "We hope to talk about the history of our franchise. There will a plaque in the new ballpark that says, '10 feet below this point is a treasure chest.' People will eventually dig it up, long after any of us are here.

"We put a DVD explaining what everything was in the treasure chest. We were going to put a DVD player in, but we hope that they will be able to play it in 75 years."

The Marlins broke ground in July on a 37,000-seat, retractable-roof park on the Orange Bowl grounds in the Little Havana section of Miami.

Construction remains on schedule, and all the activities at the site can be viewed via the Marlins New Ballpark Webcam.

"There are great items of note from our championship years and our inaugural year, plus today," Samson said.

As for everything else now sealed shut?

"It's a surprise," Samson said.

Hmmm, let the guessing begin! :mis2

I thought the whole time capsle phase died along with the Cold War

hmmm......

some big league chew

It's hard to understand. It could very well work, or at the same time technology could just take over.

But we wont know (some of us may), so we might as well try :)

A DVD---really?

Could toss in a Jump Drive and a VHS as well?

/cassette + record.

They could have just given that stuff to me if they didn't want it...

I think it would have been better to have buried the time capsule on opening day 2012 or on groundbreaking day with instructions not to open it until the final game is played at the stadium.

just a thought

Hopefully they found room for Bonifacio in the capsule.

seriously, DVDs will be obsolete in 5 years, let alone 75

DVDs are basically already obsolete(Blu-Ray). They'll probably have something that can read them in 75 years though, much like today we can still play records from the 20s and 30s.

It's a cool idea. I'm curious what went in.

stupid jerks don't even have the foresight to know what kind of media will be available in the future nor the consideration to record messages on that that format - god this ownership is incompetant

For real? Blue-ray has not overtaken DVD's.

In that, they are both the same format. Just like DVD players having the capability to play CD's, so do Blu-Ray players.

Blu-Ray is essentially a DVD in high definition. It's not aging out the DVD, it's an advanced DVD.

And like you said... we can make jokes about it but it's not like they will be oblivious of our ways in 75 years (barring utter destruction of the world). They'll be able to function a DVD.

Anyone who thinks DVD's are obsolete obviously don't understand how that works. Blu-ray is constantly fluctuating between 9 and 10 percent market share, nowhere near the BS 50% that Sony predicted it to be at by the end of last year.

I would hope this is sarcasm towards some of the other posts. If not...

Nah. It's done all the time.

It's kind of hard to bury something under a stadium AFTER it is already built.

could have had a ceremony outside the stadium or put it in a safe or something.

shame on them

The biggest reason why it's Blu-Ray hasn't taken off is because of the Porn Industry's slow progression towards it as a Viable Media.

Once the Porn Industry decides to start producing Blu-Ray' productions, Blu-ray as a Viable Media will move into the 80& Market Share.

It's happened with Cassettes and DVD's in terms to jump starting new media.

From PC World, back in 2007 when they were still arguing over HD-DVD and BD.We all know HDDVD soon lost in 2008, but only after the Japanese Adult Industry's choice to use BD in 2007.

The adoption of Blu-ray Disc by the Japanese porn industry could make all the difference in the format war. The adult film industry has long been a first mover in using new technologies, and many analysts say the industry played a key role in making VHS the winner in the video cassette fight against Sony's Betamax video tape standard years ago. Blu-ray Disc, also a Sony technology, is now vying with HD DVD to be the high-definition disc of choice in the 21st century.

I know, I've researched the history of such things. While this is usually true, as it was with both VHS and DVD, the difference is the current prices of Blu-Ray players and disks. In this economic climate most people just won't dish out the money for what seems like a minor improvement to most.

The other problem is the current economic issues facing the porn industry. Big time companies like Vivid and Digital Playground picked Blu-Ray two years ago but they have been facing a problem with physical distribution in the internet age. As they move to electronic distribution, their effect on media formats has fallen.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hopefully they found room for Bonifacio in the capsule.

They were going to, but it was already full after they put in Dontrelle Willis' lost career.
