November 18, 200322 yr haha, I think most of us here would rather dump Pudge for the savings and start Castro, but give your self a nice smack on the back for all of us. :plain
November 18, 200322 yr haha, I think most of us here would rather dump Pudge for the savings and start Castro, but give your self a nice smack on the back for all of us. :plain People wanted to decapitate me for wanting Castro over Pudge (for both performance and money reasons). I remember that the most vocal person against me was Das, but everybody else also expressed their dislike for the idea as well.
November 18, 200322 yr Wild Card, you're an idiot. You think you are the only person in the world that wanted Castro starting? Damn, you are stupid... Anyway, the best thing for us would be to have Castro come back as starter - as long as we use the money for Pudge to sign Vlad. Or some more talent to fill out this team's roster. Castro cant be traded, wont get nearly the value you should in return for him. Playing him is your best baseball option, that is where you get the most value for him. Either way, the Marlins cant lose.
November 18, 200322 yr I remember that the most vocal person against me was Das, but everybody else also expressed their dislike for the idea as well. Funny, I remember Das being against Pudge. It had a lot to do with game calling, a feeling I also shared. Luckily, we were both wrong in that respect.

Should have been clearer.
November 18, 200322 yr He is playing winter ball against players who would probably be cut within the first week of spring training in the bigs. I would love to see what Castro could do on a consistent basis and see if he could produce some of the numbers he is capable of. Maybe its selfish of me for wanting Pudge to stay because he offers so much to this team, but if he does go and Castro does get aquitted in the rape trial, then I think he would make an excellent starting catcher for this team next year. :thumbup
November 18, 200322 yr Also our young starters ahve been notoriously bad at holding runners on throughout their careers, and Pudge helped disguise that weakness.
November 18, 200322 yr Pudge didnt exactly have a great year throwing behind the plate(well atleast not up to his standards)
November 18, 200322 yr And nobody here really knows what kind of an arm Ramon poses behind the plate, either.
November 18, 200322 yr Pudge didnt exactly have a great year throwing behind the plate(well atleast not up to his standards) They say a runner steals bases against the pitcher and not the catcher, although Pudge possesses a superhuman arm and instincts enabling him to control the run game better than almost any catcher ever.
November 18, 200322 yr As of post 2003.... Castro does not equate anything better over Pudge. Nothing has changed.
November 18, 200322 yr And who is the only person that wanted Castro starting? I knew he'd produce. The guy has talent.
November 18, 200322 yr As of post 2003.... Castro does not equate anything better over Pudge. Nothing has changed. I don't even think I'm going out on a limb when I say Castro will produce more offensively if he starts in 2004 than Pudge would.

November 19, 200322 yr Lets not go crazy here. I like Castro - and he could be one of the best kept secrets in MLB. But, I am not sold that he will be better than Pudge - he will be different, yes, and will make less money so have more value. We need to see what he does for a whole season first. We are in a cant lose situation - either we have Pudge or Castro next season. Either way, I am happy.
November 19, 200322 yr He is playing winter ball against players who would probably be cut within the first week of spring training in the bigs. Exactly why I don't pay much attention to the results of Winter Leagues.
November 19, 200322 yr Jack Mckeon (from an article earlier this year) said Castro can hit 20 homers if he can get atleast 100 Atbats... now thats serious power.. I agree with WC about castro...
November 19, 200322 yr This guy is never gonna get a chance to prove himself. Its better that we move him because i think Pudge will be re-signed for next season. Maybe we are going to trade him when the trade deadline comes. We almost did it last year....but when he gets a chance to play he will show that great talent he has had.

Oakland just traded Ramon Hernandez and I've heard they might be interested in Pudge's services.
November 19, 200322 yr the prob. is that he prob. wont do it consistently. i have no idea why anyone would have reason to believe that. why do you feel that way? just bc hes performing now dosent mean that he will during the season-just like when a guy does good in the minors it dosent mean that he'll do good in the majors-and i'm not ready to put in a guy that hasnt played much and just bc he did good in those ab's that he took-dosent mean that he'll always do good-and we deserve a better catcher than that-especially if hes gonna start for us.
November 19, 200322 yr I don't even think I'm going out on a limb when I say Castro will produce more offensively if he starts in 2004 than Pudge would. Uh, yes that would be going out on a limb. I know everyone loves to project big numbers from Castro, but you've got to have more of a sample from him to equate those numbers to an entire season of production. Could he out-homer Pudge in a full season? Sure... but even Alex Gonzalez nearly did that. Pudge has never been a huge home run hitter anyway. Now if you're talking average, RBIs, getting on base, that remain to be seen. Once Castro hits over a long period, then we'll talk. I think he can knock some mistake pitches over the fence, but I also think he'd bat .250. I'm looking forward to see what he can do in a full season eventually also, but to say he'll outproduce a Hall of Fame catcher, I think I'll wait on that. I'm hoping for big things from Castro too, but let's not go overboard yet...

I'm hoping for big things from Castro too, but let's not go overboard yet... Hmm. Upon further review your right. I looked at his platoon stats (R/L split) and he absolutely bombs lefties and did below average against righties and as a pinch hitter wasn't exposed much to right handed pitching. I still project him to hit with more power and have a higher OPS than Pudge, however.
November 20, 200322 yr He is playing winter ball against players who would probably be cut within the first week of spring training in the bigs. Exactly why I don't pay much attention to the results of Winter Leagues. You should. Despite the small sample size, the Arizona Fall League only has American-born High-A/AA prospects of major league teams. Most latin winter leagues existed outside of the influence of MLB and its organizations, and are often the premier baseball campaigns for the countries. The best players of each country play in these leagues, and while they may not all be major league talent or even A-ball talent, they are very competitive leagues that help players hone their crafts. But again sample size and the nature of statistics in general can't show you this.

Oakland just traded Ramon Hernandez and I've heard they might be interested in Pudge's services. Doubtful. They won't go after Pudge, and I don't think Ramon is Billy Beane's type of guy. But the trade value for the offseason was set at catcher by the Minny-SF deal (with SF drastically overpaying) so that could work to our benefit. Though the Oakland-San Diego thing doesn't help.
