The time for LoMo is rapidly approaching

Probably about 3 weeks if we are sellers. Maybe they even just trade Cantu regardless and move Cogs to 3B.

I would support that very much. Even if we aren't "sellers" at the deadline, we could still get something useful for Cantu.

I'd be 100% in favor of trading Cantu today and shuffling Coghlan back to 3B.

Can't imagine Logan is too much worse than CC in LF, and same goes for CC at 3B. At worst, it's a wash, and I'd say Lomo would outperform Cantu at this point and bring some balance and patience to the lineup.

Agreed. I'd like to see what Morrison can do up here.

Yeah Cogs at 3rd (or Uggla I suppose) is what I keep kicking around in my head, but that's pretty much what it comes down to I guess... that he can't be any worse than Cantu right?

I mean clearly he could be worse than Cantu, but that's probably the question that needs answering. I suppose Gaby's another possibility there but he's looking comfortable at 1B and I'm not sure he'd have the range at third.

I like Cantu and he's been a useful piece here but he's probably the obvious first piece to move, mostly because he opens up a spot for Logan. Also gets Cogs out of the outfield where they can go Logan-Maybin-Ross-Stanton in some form.

Agree with all this. Cantu is indeed hurting this team at this point (sad to say). I would also definitely leave Gaby at 1B; he's been above-average there, and he appears to be improving. Plus, as you said, he's comfortable there, so I'd just leave it as is. I think CC is athletic enough to hold his own at 3B, and Logan should be fine in left......at least, fine enough that it should be ~a wash + the return for Cantu in a trade (which may not be much more than an Aaron Thompson-type [meh]).

Ceda last night faced 6 batters and Kd 4 of them. Guy's going to be a monster in the pen.

Miller had a good outing going and then ran into trouble in the 6th. Regardless, 1 walk 5 Ks is still good to see.

Second straight game just allowing 1 walk. Hopefully he continues that.

And Miller screwed up against Josh Vitters, one of the better hitting prospects in baseball. It wasn't a bad outing, just not as good as the prior three. He's allowed to give up a jack here and there, especially if it's a good hitter and not some AA vagabond.

I'm sure this has been posted before, so I'm sorry; but, does anyone know the most likely contingencies with regards to Andrew Miller's contractual status?

If he spends the rest of 2010 in the minors, what's the situation? What about if he comes up in September? What if he spends all of next year in the minors, too? When does he become a free agent; what happens to his salary, etc?

I'm finally encouraged by his progress [to a degree].

In terms of free agency, he does not become a free agent until he hits 6 years of MLB service time. This goes for anyone that signs a pro contract. If you look at JP players, they always have a clause in their contract that states that at the end of their contract, the team will either extend them or release them to free them of the club control burdens.

In terms of money though, when a team renews a contract when a player is under cost-controlled years (aka pre-arbitration years, the years where the team dictates just how much money a player makes), it cannot be any lower than 80% than what the player made previously (in combination with signing bonus)

For instance, Andrew's contract ran out after the 2009 season. After combining what he made in 2009 plus signing bonus and such, the least the Marlins could renew his contract for was 1.79m. If they renew it again next year, the least they can renew it for will be 1.43m.

Now, there is question of "Are we currently paying Andrew that much money, or since he's in the minor leagues does he make less" which I don't think was ever answered.

But his draft contract is over.

It's also a split major/minor contract, so the marlins are paying him only around $850,000-900,000 this year. On mobile or would check cots for a better figure.

But he is also out of options after this year I believe. That 1.4 million number is what he will be paid next year if he remains with the marlins, which I think is likely.

Also, brings up an issue of them not calling him up at all this year to prevent a Super2.

Hopefully Miller isn't called up too soon this time around. I hope he stays in the minors for the rest of this season and, if need be, the beginning of next. He still has to go to AAA and build some damn confidence. I've always found that to be his biggest problem; he consistently looked like he'd seen a ghost every time he struggled with the Marlins. With that said, the strike zone doesn't shrink from the minors to the majors, so the fact that he's been throwing strikes is a very positive sign - but again, it can be undone if he's afraid to throw strikes due to lack of confidence, which it seems like he was up here.

Miller is at 2.086

Marlins can call him up all of September and not be worried about Super2. We'll probably see him at the latest September 1st, maybe last week or two in August depending on how the next month goes..

Sounds like an audition for next year before trade/DFA land to me.
