Uggla's mission to 30 HR's.

Featured Replies

I ask this because he is the only 2B in MLB history to have 3 straight 30 homer seasons...and he may get 30 this year again for 4th yr in a row, if he stays with Marlins and plays 2B.

If he puts up those numbers 10-12 years in a row definetly, a maybe even if its 8 years straight that he would be a hall of famer, especially when this is considered the post steriod era.

If he gets his 30 this year and falls off the face of the Earth, no. If Uggla manages to hit 350-400 homers and plays his entire career at 2B then I think he has a chance.

I don't know whether or not he will hit 30 homers, but I do know that Uggla is an authority on where I should get my AC fixed.

You must mean the Marlins Hall of Fame. In that case, sure.

Yes, that si what I mean, a hall of fame I knew nothing about or I had forgotten, :lol OF COURSE I MEAN MLB HALLLL OF FAME?!

lol I couldn't watch that man, It feels so awkward, i have to fast forward through that commercial. Funny, though.

I loved it. It was too funny.

I half-agree with each of the above.

This is really a joke of a thread, though. I'll lay 5:1 for $100k that Uggla doesn't make the Hall of Fame even if he hits 50 homers this year. PM me if you're interested. :thumbup

He can if he does it at least 10 straight years in a row...

His glove is nothing special, average isn't that great for a 2nd baseman but he could be one of the most powerful 2nd baseman(if he finishes his career at 2nd that is) that ever played the game.

Let him do it 10 years in a row and he'd still have fewer than 350 HR. Put that together with a below-average glove and you have a guy who's nowhere near the Hall of Fame in 2010.

500 HR used to be a guarantee, but it's not like that anymore. 350 HR barely scratch the surface.

I thought the poll was 'would he do it'...

Hall of Fame? that's not something that gets decided based on 4 years of 30 HRs. That's something decided after a career is over. So my answer... maybe? I mean I wouldnt put too much stock into it happening but at this point in his career he's still young enough so it's not really fair to say no... but at the same time yes is still a big stretch.

Two things... 500 is most definitely a guarantee. It's still an exclusive list of 25 people. The 500 club is filled with players who either are all in the hall of fame or all will be in the hall of fame.

Second... you need to consider Uggla being a 2nd baseman. But it's all about the fact that Uggla is getting older now... and it's going to be honestly how he adapts to age which I dont think will really happen... but he could perhaps get 400. These are all huge if's... but say he lasts 10 more years until he's 40. He'll have about 170 by the time this season is done if all goes well. I could see him averaging 23 HRs per year... but only if he adapts to aging well. Some players really do... some dont.

He's a nice player, been valuable to this team for years...but hall of famer? That should be reserved for great players. Maybe Hanley and JJ one day. Hanley's pretty much a definite lock if he continues at this pace, and JJ is too, really, if he continues being post Tommy John JJ. Which there's no reason (aside from injuries) why those two things wouldn't continue.

In terms of home runs, Uggla is almost exactly where Jeff Kent was at the same age. Uggla got a really late start to his career, but Kent didn't start raking until later in his career when he went to San Francisco.

Kent ended up with 377 career home runs, which is probably a reasonable estimate for Uggla. Kent also played poor defense.

There is some buzz that Kent might actually get in the HOF, but I'm a bit skeptical. If Kent doesn't make it, I think that Uggla has no chance. The only difference is that Kent had a slightly better career batting average and OBP. Uggla would need to raise those a bit, or hit well over 400 home runs to get consideration.

Biggio is more likely to get in, despite his numbers not being too impressive. He did play much better defense, though. It also helps that he was a lifer and got 3000 hits.

If Uggla continues on his Kent-like trend

If he avoids the Kent injury years

If he pushes 100 walks (which looks very possible)

Then he could be looking at 350 HR, .275 BA, and .360+ career OBP which as a 2B could get him into the hall. But then that is if, if, if

HOF?

:lol

Unless, of course, it's the air-conditioning HOF of embarrassingly bad and poorly done, painful-to-watch HVAC ads. I can't believe he actually did that. It's not like he needs the (likely very, very minimal) money.

I like Dan and appreciate his contribution to the team, but he needs an agent with more common sense. He'll probably get one as soon as he gets sick and tired of the relentless ribbing he'll be taking from his teammates every time that ridiculous ad is on a clubhouse TV.

His only hope is to do a whole series of them as a parody of really bad ads starring himself. He could become a cult hero of crappy ads. He could do used cars, rent-to-own, get rich on foreclosures, aluminum siding, vegetable slicers, the list is endless. Somehow, I don't think that's how they envisioned it.

don't forget that kent won an mvp award, too.

uggla would have to win an mvp, i would think, to have a chance.

Kent was also an above-average fielder for an 11-year span of his career (1994-2004). Uggla =/= Kent, even if their home runs are (let alone OBP).

The one thing I will say is that Kent had to benefit greatly from batting right next to Barry Bonds in his best years, but even still, that would only be relevant if Kent himself manages to make the Hall.

I cannot find it on youtube. Is this just a Miami area tv ad?

What makes you think he was "above average" defensively? Granted they weren't available until late in his career, but Kent's +/- numbers were terrible (like near worst in baseball bad). There are some "total zone" numbers that don't look too favorable on the whole, but they look sporadic and I'm not sure how they stack up against the rest of the league.

If Kent doesn't get in (I'm certain he wouldn't be first ballot), then Uggla has no shot. If Kent makes it, Uggla needs to break the 400 HR mark to make up for Kent's MVP award (or win one of his own) in order to be considered.
