July 24, 201015 yr Was it last night when Bonifacio watched Dexter Fowler in the outfield and in doing so got himself to third base with a triple and ultimately scored the winning run. Or was that so other guy named Emilio Bonifacio? I'm confused. But tonight on a wet track, down a run in the ninth inning he watches the outfielder and he's being accused of not running the bases properly. This is a perfect game played by imperfect people. You guys are impossible to satisfy especially when deep down inside even if you won't admit it, you hate the guy and no matter what he does it will never be enough in your eyes to justify him taking his next breath.

It wasn't the wet track though; he was just caught looking at the OF'er. That's a situation with 1 out and his speed that there should be no doubts. He should have confidence in his best ability and know that he has to and can get to 3rd base with 1 out in that situation. And the TV also clearly showed that his first step he was going back for some reason on the passed ball. At times, it seriously looks like he's scared to make a mistake. One of those cases where he might be trying too hard. I could understand him failing with the bat, but when he's on the bases he should just run, at all times. He's a guy who outruns the ball.
July 24, 201015 yr Although our bullpen couldn't keep our lead the fact that we kept battling back against the braves was really great to see. Donnie Murphy again with a walkoff! Third walkoff now in one week! Really awesome to see. I'm hoping the offense can continue. On a site note: Did anyone here have any problems accessing this website for the past 24 hours???? I really wanted to get on this site but it hasn't worked for me all day! I kept getting either a "site not found" or DNS error. Is there anyone here that has AT&T DSL in FL and might tell me if this site has worked? Because I keep having this problem periodically and it's frustrating!
July 24, 201015 yr Sanabia had 7 hits and 3 walks, WHIP of almost 2.50 , and no other runs except the home run in 4+ innings? Got some great calls from the umpire on 3-1 and 3-2 pitches, a smash right at Gaby on a bad pitch for a 3-6-3 DP, a caught stealing due to perfect throw from Paulino who can be erratic at times a deep fly down the right field line foul by a foot to save 2 runs how lucky can a guy be. He's not a starter for sure. So I guess Johnson is about it.

He should have confidence in his best ability and know that he has to and can get to 3rd base with 1 out in that situation. And you know all this definitively because you've been in that position so many times that instinctively you have absolutely know doubt you would have been able to choreograph the play better than he did, even though as inelegantly as he may of looked, he wound up with the desired result. It must be nice to be so perfect. I mean honestly, we all saw the play, he stumbled around a bit, he had trouble just past second base but to pretend for even a moment you have a better handle on what took place is ridiculous. At least he didn't freeze at second base which would have been the kiss of death and maybe ultimately cost the Marlins the game but he overcame his faux paux and got himself ninety feet from scoring the tieing run. What else can you ask? Not everyone dances like Mikhail Baryshnikov, not everyone runs the bases like Ricky Henderson. Give the guy a break.

No if I would've been running...well nevermind, I can't run. My point is though that Bonifacio has a special gift, and that's his speed. From what I saw on TV, he was just looking at the play too much; perhaps he initially tripped. The passed ball he clearly went back and got a horrible jump on that, and I know that because they showed it clearly on tv. Also, lets face it. The only reason we're not bashing him right now is because the ball got past Chipper Jones. Considering he was brought in the game specifically to pinch-run, that was almost a very costly running mistake, regardless of the reason (trip, looking at the ball, whatever).

The guy could potentially be a solid #3, and he'd still be a prospect in 3 friggin' years, let alone how he's pitching in the big leagues as a twenty-one year old kid.
July 24, 201015 yr arizona handed the giants the game. really pissed that we didnt gain in the wild card.
July 24, 201015 yr I don't think anyone can say bonifacio is a good base runner. Hes incredibly fast, but he lacks base running skills. If that throw was online and chipper picks it, hes out. Even if he doesn't hesitate, trip, check his shoelaces w/e. He would have been out. It was a risk, and it payed off. I'm glad it did. Actually if he doesn't trip, I think he's clearly safe. It was the correct decision to go to 3rd as well because there was 1 out. If there were 0 outs or 2 outs, it would've been dumb, but with 1 out he had to take that chance, so at least he did indeed continue after tripping and did the right thing, I guess.
July 24, 201015 yr Another thing worth noting with the whole starter vs. bullpen comparison... You can't just hope to get lucky with a starter; with a bullpen, you can experiment. All of the young starters we have could easily come in and probably pitch well out of the pen (Sanabia included). Since we're speaking of minor league players, Jose Ceda is lights out right now in AA. You never know if a young power arm like that pans out in a role where he only has to go an inning in the big leagues. Even Marinez if he continues getting chances and works his way up. With a starter, it's different. I really think we need a veteran starter who can give quality innings, if we're going to contend. At least an upgrade over what we currently have. I wonder what West could do outta the pen if we just let him blow it out for an inning with his 2 best pitches? I think he could do pretty well. I do agree we need a vet starter but have no idea who we could get.

Also the fact that he's on a strict 80 to 90 pitch limit which is good as we let him grow with experience without really hurting his arm. He could be a solid 3-5 starting pitcher in a year or 2.
July 24, 201015 yr Three Things 1) I need to buy/find a Donnie Murphy Jersey A.S.A.P. 2) Great Win to be able to comeback against one of the games best closers. 3) I really don't like Tankersley as our LOOGY. It seems he can't get more then 2 batters out back to back in an inning vs right or left handed bats.
July 24, 201015 yr arizona handed the giants the game. really pissed that we didnt gain in the wild card. Well we are moving up ahead other teams like the Dodgers, Cards, and Rockies and we gained a full game in the division.
July 24, 201015 yr JJ is putting on a cy young performance Ricky has ups and downs, but he can still have great outings. I know consistency can be a problem but do people seriously have zero faith in him? Anibal is more of the same as Ricky, except a little more problematic. Despite Sanabia's very short outings, he's got really good stuff. I know he's been on a "pitch limit" and even if he wasn't, he wasn't playing efficient enough to go deep in the game. Regardless, is it really completely out of the realm of possibility that he goes 7+ innings? In the month of July he's had a total of 16 innings and given up 2 ER (unfortunately over 4 outings) Volstad/RVH on a bad day are still just about as much as you could expect from a #5 starter, aren't they? --- So are Nunez, Hensley, Veras, Sanchez, Tankersley and the Hopper really that unreliable as some people make them out to be? Since Edwin's took over the bullpen has done a complete 180. I know Hensley's been scuffling lately, but it's way too soon to throw him under the bus. Veras has been a new man since coming back from the minors. Today's two ERs from Veras are his first since april 13. --- So then.... the lineup. Clearly the biggest problem, imo. On a bad day, some of our guys look absolutely dead out there. Gaby's pretty much the sole model of consistency on the team. Hanley's really underachieving. For a few days it looked like Coghlan was getting back to his 09 glory, but he's really regressed. We don't have the option of platooning Baker/Ronnie. Helms has trouble catching up to fastballs (next series after Braves is against the Giants - I don't look forward to seeing another Helms vs Brian Wilson match up), Cody Ross' home runs numbers are down from last year, and if you've been following our game threads, you'll remember how I call Jorge Cantu "Zombie-Cantu" and I don't think I need to explain anything there. Mike Stanton seems to improve, I guess, but ultimately it's pretty unreasonable for anyone to put too much on a 20 year old's shoulders. Not counting the two walk-offs from Donnie Murphy and I guess the RBIs Peterson got today, our bench as also been overall dreadful. Our pitching flaws wouldn't be anywhere near as exposed as they are now if our offense was better.
July 24, 201015 yr Lefties were 1 for 23 against Tank before that HR....and no, he should never come in against a righty

To All the haters, nay sayers and non believers all I have to say is... DON'T STOP BLEEPING BELIEVING!!!!!!

The only tradeable guy is Cantu (if we're contending, that is), and his replacement should be Morrison. With the offense, it's just a case that they're underachieving, but you simply have to trust that they'll start scoring consistently sooner rather than later. You look at our lineup, position by position, for the most part we have average to above average hitters on this team. Regarding your comments on the rotation... 2. I have confidence in Nolasco, but I can't ignore the fact he's incredibly inconsistent, and has been his entire career. Is he really a #2 at this point? 3. Anibal's fine as a #3, but the way Nolasco has pitched, he's (Anibal) been the #2, and certain numbers suggest he won't keep that up. 4. Sanabia has above average stuff; but at the end of the day, he's still only giving you 5 innings max, and we're counting on a 21 year old, who many (actually everyone but cornfield) considered the Marlins were rushing, at the time they called him up. 5. Volstad is a fine #5, but fact is, he was sent down for a reason, so not even he is a guarantee to bounce back and pitch like he belongs. As far as VandenHurk is concerned, he hasn't even pitched well in AAA this year, so I'm not going to count on him to step in, and give this team what it needs at the backend of the rotation. He's similar to Sanabia in that even when he pitches well, he rarely goes past 5 innings anyway because his pitch counts get too high. Many think VandenHurk would be better suited as a reliever, long-term.
July 24, 201015 yr I believe. Lets do this. btw...I love Edwin for using Donnie there. Not a manager in the world who would have used anyone but Donnie. Only Donnie and Brad Davis were left. Good to see what had been a glaring hole (the bench) coming through! The bullpen is getting better, Tank excluded!, despite the 9th inning melt down. I'm still not convinced this team can win it, another week like this one may change m mind. Tank excluded? The guy who hadn't given up a hit since June 16th and hadn't given up a hit to a lefty since June 8th? Come on, Tank's been as solid as anyone in the last month and a half.
July 24, 201015 yr Without giving away the future, who can we trade? We definitely need a reliable starter to go right after JJ in the rotation and we need another option off the bench
July 24, 201015 yr why did edwin put tank in against the righty??? that was very fredi-esque and I think it messed up his confidence

You look at our lineup, position by position, for the most part we have average to above average hitters on this team. So? I'm just pointing that essentially having Coghlan-Hanley-Cantu underachieving from last year has been a huge blow to the team, and overall shifted more pressure onto the pitchers. Ultimately I'm aware there are few things we can do with our offense except hope they break out of their collective slumps, with a few exceptions: I totally agree about replacing Cantu's spot in the roster with Morrison. We'd be truly killing two birds with one stone at this point, we'd have a young and long term player getting major league experience while at the same time actually be contributing more to the team than Cantu. Right now, I personally think we'd be pretty fortunate to get anything beyond C+ prospects for Cantu, although it could happen (if it does, the other team is getting robbed, let's face it). As for Ross... I'm not 100% sure how I feel at all. I personally value him a lot defensively (not even counting the fact that I really like the guy). Regarding your comments on the rotation... 2. But I guess you were just pointing out that the offense needs to step up and be more consistent, and I fully agree.

Nolasco is incosistent, amd how soon before the wheels come off of Anibal (I just get a vibe that he will implode)? I'd like to see a solid starter pitch the day after JJ for a strong 1-2 punch to make a run... Who could we trade? I don't see us getting help like that until the offseason (You can put me in the school of thought that the team will start building up the team to be a winner in 2011 a year before the stadium opens)...
