Anibal Sanchez with the one hitter. He's been coasting along with a pretty good ERA all year, but he really ramped things up today and showed the capability to dominate a game that he hadn't shown since 2006. Great to see for a guy who lost years of his career due to serious injury problems, who may never have pitched in the majors again after what he went through.

 

No matter how this year ends up, one bright spot we can all agree on is having a rejuvenated Anibal Sanchez.

Got the split and Ani went the distance. Good rest for BP. And Cantu with 2 hits.

Now on to San Diego where we need to take at least 2 of 3 against the NL West Leading Padres who have just acquired former MVP Miguel Tejada.

Anibal was a monster. Hopefully the back end of the rotation is taking notes and feeling equal to the task in the days ahead.

Yep, have always liked Ani a lot. Out of all of our pitchers glad to see him get a CG the most. Just one f'n hit from having two no-no's in his career.

But yeah, Stanton crushed the ball today...Ronny had no problem getting guys in from 3rd w/less than 2 out. Overall, good game.

Damn, I'm really sorry I missed this game. Sanchez pitched a gem it seems, and Stanton was being his monster self.

 

Also Cantu's last game. Can't say I won't miss him.

I couldn't watch the entire game. Ugh, I missed a really great pitching performance by Anibal! I'm really glad he did so well though. Sucks it couldn't have been a perfect game or a no hitter tho ::coughs:: but hey we win and Anibal did great. And it was just what our bullpen needed...and it was what us Marlins fans needed after a tough loss last night. So a good way to comeback after a tough loss.

Not related. Cantu made an error that let a baserunner on, but the one hit that followed was just a bloop into center that fell in. It wasn't related to Cantu as that play could have happened at anytime.

He was very good in 2006, got injured and then had a few years where he pitched only a few games + didn't do it very well. This year he says he feels like he did in 2006 and so far he's been a solid pitcher. Mid 3's ERA and hasn't gotten shelled this year.

It wasn't just that he was rubbish, that implies being terrible without a reason. His shoulder was never right entering 2007 and after he pitched poorly and was demoted to the minors, his shoulder injury came to light. Anibal missed long stretches of time, including multiple instances where he was rushed back only to not have it and re-injure himself. If his career would have essentially been over, it wouldn't have been due to ineptitude, but more the same kind of shoulder trouble that has de-railed a lot of promising careers, with the most famous example being Mark Prior. Unlike elbow ligament damage, which has a very high success rate of being fixed through TJ (with many pitchers actually coming back stronger like JJ), shoulder injuries have no surefire fix.

 

Anibal came back late last year and pitched decently enough with a good ERA, but his losing record reflected his lack of ability to shut down the other team and go long innings. He's been better this year, but still wasn't a shutdown pitcher and was being forced out of games too early. He really hadn't shown that he had what it took to come out and throw a complete game until today.

 

BTW, don't know if you know much about him, but he was sensational after being called up mid-season in 2006, and even threw a no-hitter. He was part of a rotation that set a record for having 4 rookies with ten wins, and out of those 4 he seemed to be the most potentially dominant, even more than JJ who was actually challenging for the ERA title before getting hurt.

Outstanding from Anibal, who also tied his career high in strikeouts with 8. I said we needed 3 of 4 in SF but I am not too disheartened by a 2-2 split considering the Giants are on a current 17-5 streak in their last 22. Again, we need 2 of 3 in San Diego and I am confident of this since Ricky and JJ are pitching. Hell, a good outing from Volstad and we could be talking SWEEEEEEEP....but then again this is the Marlins.....

They are a fun group to watch. Following this team can be frustrating because of the payroll constraints, and the FO's struggles to work under that, but I don't think there is a fan here who would disagree that this is one of the most exciting group of guys to watch play every day. They aren't the most talented, but there are guys like Cody Ross who bust their butts every day and play the game in such a way that you're proud to be a fan. Also, although they struggled a bit early this year in this category, they've always been a team that is hard to count out of a game because they have the potential for real offensive explosions.

 

The other things you need to know- Josh Johnson is putting up the best ERA since Greg Maddux, and with Mike Stanton you may be watching the birth of the most powerful hitter of his generation. Won't be the best hitter, but he can hit a ball harder than anyone I've EVER seen play the game of baseball.

Oh yeah, take THAT Buster Posey and your (non) streak!

Nolasco seems to have found his groove, Ani's been solid all year, JJ is JJ. We might actually have a solid 1,2,3 in the rotation for the rest of the season!
