Risky move by Longoria but I fully respect him for saying what he said. You would hope fans would be turning up when you are on the verge of clinching a playoff spot and playing great baseball.

We fully expect Raysfan1998 to chew up Longoria now, right? Maybe saying he's only commenting on attendance because he's bitter and that attendance isn't that bad?

David Price also made comments about the attendance calling their lack to turn out "embarrassing" on Twitter.

Even though it will be better for the players playing in front of a decent crowd, they know its not the same as the fans actually wanting to pay to go and see their team.

If they can't secure a stadium deal, they should move. I know I've said this before, but it's utterly absurd that they can't draw fans with how good they've been. Tampa is worst than Miami is. At least Tampa has a roof and hasn't been plagued by two massive firesales (they might have one coming up after this season but that doesn't explain the lack of attendance over the last couple of years).

 

I think what will prevent them from moving in a practical sense is that they have some sort of ironclad contract with Tampa/St. Pete, which prevents them from doing so in the near future. If this weren't in place, I would love to consider what I've proposed before...contract the Pittsburgh franchise and move the Rays team into PNC Park.

33,215 saw the Marlins clinch in 2003, and our attendance sucks. That was a Friday though, so lets make it fair. The Tuesday before we clinched the Marlins brought in 25,311. The attendance on that last homestand averaged 29,452.

Says he needs to go to less than $ 50,000,000. Firesale to happen after the season. Could the Marlins look into getting Evan Longoria for our 3rd base problem ?

Tampa has a roof but that that''s a horrlble place to watch a game in and the location is far from the population base. Also, the way people talk you would think they're last in attendance but are 22nd with just under 23k per game.

Is a lack of plasma screen TVs and fancy amenities really a valid excuse for not showing up to support a winning team? I really doubt that this has much to do with it. Notice that teams that the teams that draw well are traditionally the competitive ones. Pittsburgh and the Nationals have started seeing attendance drop because the novelty of the "niceness" of the park has worn off and the teams aren't competing. If a team is competitive enough, I believe a good baseball town would supply could attendance at below average facilities.

 

I can buy the lack of a climate controlled facility being a problem (in Miami), but Tampa doesn't have this problem. I genuinelly believe that it's just a bad baseball city and Florida is a bad baseball state.

 

Also, I consider 22/30 for a team that has been on top pretty much since Opening Day (and was in the WS only a couple of years ago) to be absolutely abysmal.

I just love how Rays fans are demonized for having their money spending priorities in order (i.e. Food, Bills, and clothes come first). Last night Rays fans proved it's the bad economy the reason they don't attend more game. And the fact they're getting attacked for spending what little money they have in this economy on the essentials instead of baseball is pathetic. So how come other playoff bound teams are still drawing much better crowds? They are just as likely as Rays fans to be suffering a bit financially

The Marlins weren't in first (or near first) in their division since Opening Day in 2003. The Marlins weren't a virtually guaranteed to be a postseason team weeks to months before the season ended. And the Marlins weren't coming off of a World Series appearance only two seasons prior.

 

Still the Marlins should have drawn better in 2003, roof or no roof. That doesn't excuse Rays fans for not showing up this season.
