They will probably lose Crawford which will be a huge loss for them, Pena who hits HR but NOTHING else and either Garza or Shields since they have good pitching prospects to replace them. The 3 of them (1 of Garza or Shields) amount to around $23m of their 2010 payroll.

They Rays have ~40 mil coming off the books from free agents and about ~20 mil in raises from contracts and arbitration, which would drop them to a 52m payroll. They likely won't even need to move one of Shields or Garza (I'm talking for pure payroll reasons, Hellickson changes things)

Yeah, Evan's going nowhere. That's not happening. But Crawford isn't getting resigned. That is for sure.

The Rays have a great player in Desmond Jennings coming up, not sayingf he's as good as CC, but won't hurt them. The biggest way the Rays could cut salary is to dump Upton, not resign Pena or Crawford and trade Shields to open a spot for Hellickson, they would still have the core players and some money left to pursue a player at deadline next year.

It basically means no Crawford and no Pena so they need Jennings to step up big and find a suitable replacement for Pena.

Also Shields or Garza could be on the move.

The Rays will be fine.

Not so sure. They're banking on prospects to replace proven starters.

Crawford is one player and he's the only one putting up a performance that'll be hard to replace.

It's gonna suck to be a Rays' fan after all this winning.

Rays fans don't go to games, even against the Yankees.

Dude, we're Marlins' fans.

I hate this. I disagree with Stuart. Why cut the payroll?! Do you WANT to end up back as the doorstep of baseball?! Unbelievable. I don't want to end up the '98 Marlins (no offense).

I guess 81% full isn't good enough huh? I mean we have more attendance than most articles let on.

No it isn't. You guys are 22nd out of 30 in the league in attendance. Your nowhere near 81%, it's actually 52.7%.

I'll say the same thing to you that I say to fellow Marlins fans; you want a higher payroll? Try showing up.

First off I wasn't referring to season attendance as a whole, I was referring to the attendance at last weeks series finale against the Yankees only, cause the accusation is fans don't even show up for Yankee games.

Second, we may be 22nd in attendance but we're also like 7th in the MLB in television ratings, what does that tell you? It tells me fans support the team but either don't have the money to buy a ticket or just don't want to deal with the headache of getting to the Trop. From what I hear, it's a nightmare. A new stadium is the only thing that I can think of that would solve that. Location, location, location...

Of course you disagree with him. It's not your money that's being lost, it's his. He's losing a TON of money to have the product that's on the field this year on the field. Plus, again, nothing of substance outside of Crawford is being lost; And one of the best prospects in baseball is going tot ake his place, and one player a team does not make.

Your comments on tv ratings or whatever, and? You sound just like a Marlins fan lol. the leaked financial reports shows just how important attendance is to the teams revenue. Good for you that you have good tv ratings like we do. That doesn't do jack sh*t to revenue. Like rab said, it's plain and simple: You want your team to have a payroll? Show up. Excuses as to why or explanations of how there really is a fan base doesn't actually add money to revenue. Action does.

It's not a firesale.

First off, nice double post. Second I call Benoit and Soriano pretty big substance, as well as Pena.

When I went to 2 games last summer it was really easy getting there. Straight off the motorway/highway, along a couple of streets and into the stadium carpark. However we came from the South (Longboat Key) crossing the huge bridge over the water, so maybe it is a totally different story if coming from the Tampa side.
