Goodbye Andrew Miller!

Anyone that defends that trade needs to have their head examined.

I need my head examined then. 2 top-level prospects, 2 bullpen-arm prospects, and a throw in were returned for 1 superstar, Unless Maybin really comes on, this trade has to be considered a total bust, but only hindsight lets us mock this trade. I liked the 2 LA teams packages better at the time and it appears that the LAD trade may have worked out better, but lets not pretend that Miller and Maybin weren't considered top guys to get. These were top ten picks in the 2005 and 2006 MLB drafts after all.

This. Maybin & Miller were two of baseball's top ten prospects, at the time of the trade.

Let it go

I can't just yet, it really p*sses me off. That was just a nightmare of a trade.

In hindsight, yes...but you can't blame him at the time. I'm sure Dontrelle left a bitter taste in Detroit's mouth. He essentially traded Cabrera for two Top 10 draft picks that everyone was drooling over at the time, leaving the other four to compensate for Willis.

I would just like to thank Detroit and Florida for ruining a great pitcher. I hope he kicks ass in Boston. Hey Admin, name change? :whistle

More like he'll probably get his ass kicked in Boston...

Interesting that the Marlins got another guy with control issues in return for Miller.

It really does seem like a cheaper version of Andrew Miller...

Your name always makes me thirsty...

Should change your name to StantonTime.

That's actually a pretty good idea.

Mike Stanton is so good, he gets his own time zone!

And with options

Beinfest on Andrew Miller:

"He worked hard and did everything he could. He just never really got there with us and that's unfortunate. Andrew had a lot of opportunity here. He's still relatively young and we recognize that. Maybe the old change of scenery, and I don't like to use that a lot, but maybe it'll be beneficial for him. He really, really tried and the organization really, really tried to get him to fulfill his potential and it just didn't happen."

Beinfest on Dustin Richardson:

"We had an opportunity to pick up a young left-handed reliever who we think has a really good arm and we want to give him a shot. It's about throwing strikes. The stuff is really good with Richardson. He had very limited opportunity in the big leagues. He has good minor league numbers and the stuff is good. He has good size and we have control obviously with his service time and with options, so we thought it made sense. We think there's upside with this kid."

Hopefully this guy can contribute this year. Does he have potential closer stuff if he gets the command fixed, or is his ceiling lower?

According to that, his MLB comparison is Mark Hendrickson. That's not closer potential, but I think it would be good if he turned into a Mark Hendrickson for us. For what it's worth, he throws harder than Hendrickson. The scouting report says 92-93; I saw a video of him throwing a scoreless inning against the Blue Jays this year in a mop-up role, and he was consistently at 91 with his fastball.

I have to disagree with saying that the Detroit trade only looks bad in hindsight.

At the time a lot of people were worried about Miller, considering he was rushed to the majors and struggled heavily before we acquired him.

Maybin was a legit prospect back then, so it's a different story.

But I think we could have easily picked up a better package from either the Angels or Dodgers.

Oh, and an update: Mike Rabelo is going to be a coach for the GCL Tigers next year.

Florida is believed to have asked the Dodgers for four players for Cabrera, including outfielder Matt Kemp, first baseman James Loney and minor league pitcher Clayton Kershaw, their top prospect. Florida had backed away from pitchers Chad Billingsley and Jonathan Broxton but still insisted on a major leaguer as the fourth player.

In exchange for Cabrera, the Marlins are believed to have asked the Angels for second baseman Howie Kendrick, catcher Jeff Mathis, pitcher Ervin Santana and top pitching prospect Nick Adenhart. The Angels had agreed to trade Santana or Adenhart but not both.

Oh, the possibilities. :(

Notice that it says we ASKED for that, not that we were offered it.

Yeah.

And for what it's worth, an Angels trade would've probably sucked, too. Especially if we would've ended up with Adenhart (R.I.P.) instead of Santana.

could you imagine the greatness this team could have had had we gotten broxton, kershaw, and kemp. jj and kershaw would be incredible.

Miller was supposed to be our Kershaw. :banghead

The Angels offered one of Santana or Adenhart but not both.

In the deal for sure: Howie Kendrick and Jeff Mathis. One of Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, and Nick Adenhart would be included as well. However, the Fish want two of those starters. The Halos won't do it, but might be able to give one starter plus Reggie Willits. Either way it's going to be a major haul.

That's a pretty steep non-negotiable asking price by us (and yes I know Cabrera is Cabrera, coming off arguably a better year than A-Rod). Kendrick was a stud in the minors (so was Mathis) coming off a solid first 72 games and Adenhart and Santana were thought to be the future core of their rotation.

With the Dodgers, it was just a failure to negotiate on their part. Apparently, we called them right before we made the Tigers trade and Colletti didn't even answer the phone. He never even countered our first offer which of course was ridiculous and just balked at it all saying we wanted too many players. So I disagree that we could've gotten a better deal from the Dodgers but we definitely could've made out better partnering with the Angels.

And looking at it now (despite how good they were as prospects back then), if we would've made that trade with the Angels, we probably would've ended up being even worse.

And who cares how they were in the minors if we're comparing it to the trade we actually made? The problem with this trade hasn't been that we got guys who weren't good in the minors. Maybin was the consensus pick for 2009 Rookie of the Year.
