Marlins intend to spend Uggla $$$ on starter. Vazquez

Being a Yankee fan, funny the fish are looking at both that were busts for them. Since Pavano left, he's turned it around and seems like a safer bet then Javy. I definitely agree Javy has the talent, but seems like he can be another Nalsco. Really wished there were other options then these 2. But it's nice to see them willing to spend Ugla's money, and not count it with Buck's contract like we thought they would.

On a side note, does anyone think Pavano and Matt Garza look alike?

Don't understand the lovefest for Pavano, really.

He's probably not worth 3 years/11 million per at this point in his career.

Vazquez has had a better overall career, and has been really good when pitching for National League teams.

Prior to last year, this is what he's done in terms of innings pitched in the decade

2000: 217.2 (pitching for an NL team)

2001: 223.2 (pitching for an NL team)

2002: 230.1 (pitching for an NL team)

2003: 230.2 (pitching for an NL team)

2004: 198.0 (pitching for an AL team)

2005: 215.2 (pitching for an NL team)

2006: 202.2 (pitching for an AL team)

2007: 216.2 (pitching for an AL team)

2008: 208.1 (pitching for an AL team)

2009: 219.1 (pitching for an NL team)

That's a lot of innings.

His struggles have been in the American League.

The guy has been a quality pitcher/innings eater for a good portion of his career, though (especially in the NL).

The only thing that worries me about Vazquez is the decrease in velocity in his fastball in 2010. He should probably still be good for over 200 innings in the NL again in 2011, which is super from the #4 in the rotation, and will help the bullpen even more (less usage, and Sanabia can move to the pen, as well).

Vazquez was an elite pitcher not so long ago (2009).

The love fest for Pavano comes directly from the fact that last season he averaged 7 innings per game. I'd love for him to duplicate that this season.

So it's an innings thing then? Vazquez is the same type of innings eater (better throughout his career), and comes at a cheaper price.

Pavano doesn't even fit the team's payroll if he's asking for 3 yrs/33 mill. Not to mention, the last time Pavano got a long-term contract, he decided to take a vacation with it.

And was a bust on the big stage both times for the Yanks. Perhaps it was an AL thing and he's better in the NL. Still though, I wouldn't trust Javy in big games unless he proves he can do 2009 over again. I guess it's a gamble worth taking, since there's not much else out there.

Pitching in the AL/pitching in the new Yankee stadium where even routine flyballs can be HR's = pitcher's nightmare for a guy like Javy Vazquez.

He'd do better in the NL, for sure. He's proven that. Maybe NY isn't for him, seeing as his two worst seasons have come with the Yankees. Those are the only two seasons that he hasn't gone 200 innings in (although, he came close in his first stint with 198 innings).

All in all, a Vazquez signing does give this team four rotation arms next year capable of 200+ innings (JJ, Nolasco, Anibal, Vazquez), with Volstad who should be good for ~175. Not too many teams can say that.

Considering both pitchers are old, their more recent seasons are all that are important. Vazquez had a great season 2 years ago, and Pavano had a great season last season.

Honestly, I'd welcome either with arms wide open. I just think that Pavano has more of a shot at going deeper into games next season. It's certainly an innings thing. And it's directly related to Ricky Nolasco and Chris Volstad (and the unnamed 5th pitcher from last year). Both of those guys had trouble on occasion going deep, forcing our bullpen to be overworked and making guys unavailable at times.

With the addition of a quality inning eater, we can have a fresher bullpen, ready to go whenever. And we can afford to let Volstad and Nolasco screw up, because we can rely on pitchers 1, 2, and 3. to not screw up (hopefully lol).
