January 21, 201115 yr As we have recently learned, the Marlins do not give contracts longer than four years to ballplayers older than thirty. Or no trade clauses. Or contract extensions.
January 21, 201115 yr As we have recently learned, the Marlins do not give contracts longer than four years to ballplayers older than thirty. Yes, because Dan Uggla and Albert Pujols are clearly the same type of ballplayer. I don't really think the Marlins would've had a problem giving Dan Uggla 5 years, if he would've actually been worth having for the next 5 years.
January 21, 201115 yr I honestly do expect the Marlins to make an offer if he does hit the market. Whether or not it's a realistic offer is another story. To me, though, Loria seems like the kind of guy that likes flare and to make huge splashes, and ballpark + Pujols is one, and there really aren't many other. I was looking at the list of FA's for next offseason, and there really aren't many big ones. Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols top that list. I don't remember seeing any pitchers that really caught my eye, nor outfielders. I refuse to believe that we won't make a big signing next offseason, even though Samson has said they aren't looking for one. If payroll does jump to around 70M, how much money will we have to spend next offseason? Whose salaries go up significantly next season? It's still too early to realistically predict, but I think there's enough for one big guy, especially if people like Vazquez are let off.

Resigning Anibal, Volstad and Coghlan and letting Infante, Nunez and Vazquez go and keeping everyone else would put the 2012 payroll around $60M.

He's only been on the DL twice in 10 years and all of the offseason surgery he's had (only four, from what I count) has been minor right shoulder stuff.

And he's not injury prone.
January 21, 201115 yr Just to go on from what people have said about the "injury prone" claim - I've seen him on the DL once personally and that was in 2006. Come on, seriously? The man is a beast.

And he's not injury prone. Well he's also not young. Just thought I'd throw that out there. And he isn't getting any younger. That doesn't change anything for me though. I'd give him a 7 year deal. Age in baseball clearly doesn't affect players like in other sports. Especially ones as good as Pujols.
January 21, 201115 yr Are people seriously coming up with reasons (Pretty bad ones at that) as to why they don't one of the 10 greatest hitters ever playing on this team?
January 22, 201115 yr it will probably take 6 years/ 240 million to sign him if it becomes a bidding war. which basically means, he isn't coming to Florida even in our wildest dreams.

January 22, 201115 yr He's not a beast--- He's a Machine. Pujols is a machine, Stanton is a machine. Better hope Arnie doesnt swing by to the new stadium (if we got Pujols)........

January 22, 201115 yr After Tony Reagins basically just got raped in the ass by Toronto, it wouldn't surprise me if the Blue Jays ended up with Pujols. The Blue Jays could do whatever the hell they want, at this point. That Vernon Wells trade has to be one of the worst trades I've seen in awhile. It makes the Jayson Werth contract look good.

I would. From the list of teams he'd OK a trade to, I think Canada is about as bad as it can get for him. From what I remember, he'd OK a trade to Florida, Houston, and both LA teams. Those are all places with a lot of sun and a lot of Hispanics and you have to guess those teams are his preferences in terms of location because their situations are radically different. I think he'd really look around before accepting a deal with the Blue Jays.
January 22, 201115 yr LOL'n @ the Angels so much. They were just so desperate because of the failed attempts at Crawford, Werth, Beltre... and every other FA really this summer. But this was hardly the way to go. Not that Wells is a bad player by any means, but they could have used the money so much wiser next summer (or for a mid-season aquisition if they were contending)
January 22, 201115 yr Oh, and I bet the Jays are paying a bit of that money. No, the Angels are supposedly paying every penny of Wells' contract.

January 22, 201115 yr Then I stand corrected. Horrible, horrible move for the Halos. Getting back on topic to the Pujols thing... did anyone watch SportsDome on Comedy Central? They had a segment about Pujols getting a contract extension and were saying the Mayor of St. Louis gave him the Key to the City so he would stay and they were interviewing people about it. One guy said "I would love to come home from a hard day of work and see Pujols in my bed" haha :lol Pretty funny show because the imitate perfectly the ESPN Sports personalities. It's made from the guys who produce The Onion. Wow... that wasn't on topic at all.
January 23, 201115 yr Curious, when the Marlins get Pujols--- Do we unretire number 5 or tell the GOAT to pick another number?
