Yes, the issue itself is that we are relying on too many young players. The veteran players that the Fish have are simply not good enough to carry the team when the young players struggle.

If this is a serious reply I would "like" this post if this was on Facebook

Maybe its just me, but hasn't this issue of not cashing in always been the Marlins problem??

Dating back years, this team has always had problems with "clutch" hitting.

It's much worse this year, because we've got just a couple guys on the entire team that are capable of delivering big hits regularly. We may get ten hits, but they are almost all isolated incidents, and we just don't have any boppers who are used to knocking them down when they are set up. And don't expect that to change when Hanley is back, because for as good as he has been as a hitter, he's still not a situational hitter who excels in big situations.

This team misses Dan Uggla, Cody Ross, and the good Jorge Cantu.

Yeah, those guys are awesome right now.

And we were so awesome while they were here.

This sucks, plus with Hand having a below average start it means once JJ gets back we will probably still be throwing Javy out there.

Also I feel like we've already lost the div. I knew it would be tough to win but falling 7 back and odds are Philly will not go on a prolonged losing streak. Were gonna need to play well and win our series vs Philly to have a shot.

I think our main issue is Coghlan leading off.

Edwin said he may lead off with Hanley once he gets back.

lol @ u thinking we can beat the Phillies rotation.

That's what I'm hoping for.

He didn't really say that.

I never said I thought we could beat the Phillies rotation but I thought we could hang within 2-4 games of them.

We definitely could have had we kept playing the way we started the year. Now, even if we got to that level again, the gap we've fallen into now may be too big to overcome. That said, thinking positively, I still believe the Braves are within striking distance. We can catch them if we ever get back on track consistently.

Erick, I think he is saying they had clutch moments late, which I actually agree with and I understand what he is saying.

None of these Marlins have stepped up late and prove they can get it done.

They're hitting a combined .207 right now.

Who are you talking about Uggla, Ross and Cantu or the Marlins team? I would agree if you are talking about the Marlins, if your talking about Uggla, Ross, Cantu the point is irrelevant because we were talking about years past.

How is that irrelevant? Especially with Cantu.

You want to talk about years past? How about 2010.

If memory serves me correctly they did well late in games, and all had special moments as marlins, you should know this Rabbit.

What difference does it make?

For what it's worth, they had their moments of failure, too.

Also, they're not the same players they once were. If we still had those three guys in 2011, we'd be even worse in 2011. Uggla will probably start hitting at some point and Cody Ross should remain decent, but Cantu absolutely sucks now. Cantu is basically Wes Helms now.

You don't necessarily need to be a veteran to be a "clutch hitter."

I think I miss Miguel Cabrera more than those three guys combined.

Also, for what it's worth, Omar Infante was supposed to be another Placido Polanco or whatever it is that you want to call a clutch hitter.

Anyway, the main reasons why the Marlins were intrigued by Infante were that he was a better defender at 2B, a veteran, and a very good hitter with .RISP the last three years. Is everyone just ignoring this or does it not count because it hasn't worked?

The Marlins do value veterans.

If anything, I wish they didn't value veterans as much. Still wish they would've gotten someone with more upside for Uggla (of course, that probably wasn't even a possibility...the other rumored offers were crap).

I don't think anybody gets that I wasn't talking about the way these guys are producing this year. It's more that we've taken their production that brought us a lot of wins the last three years, and replaced it with guys who are either too raw to be regular run producers, like some of the kids, or guys that just aren't any good and have no business seeing the field as much as they are.

It's not like these things are surprising either. Sure, JJ and Hanley are out, but we chose our situation at third and on the bench by not really making any effort at all.

I understand the merits of having a guy at second who is just a good hitter who can get hits in big moments. The problem is that this team really needs a guy who doesn't just get clutch hits, but can get big hits regularly. For as much power as Gaby, Lomo, and Stanton have shown, we still don't have a single guy on the team that it really feels like the other team has to worry about putting 2-4 runs on the board when he comes up with guys on base. That's what this team needs, and even Hanley isn't that guy.

Infante was actually that guy, though.

This is why I don't believe in the whole clutch theory.

Anyway, wasn't Infante hitting like over .320 with .RISP the last three years?

I still think the last two weeks of this season have been a fluke for this offense. I really don't believe that a team can be this bad with .RISP all year. It's basically not sustainable for a bunch of big league hitters (a bunch of good big league hitters, really) to suck this bad in an area all year long.

I can buy Stanton struggling with .RISP because he K's a lot and pitchers are pitching him more carefully in those situations.

LoMo and Gaby, though? I really don't see why they wouldn't be able to come up with big hits on a more regular basis with men on base. They might be young, but who cares? Both are patient hitters who work the count. They're good hitters. In the words of Tommy Hutton, they're "professional" hitters (okay, I can't believe I just used that to support my argument...). Either way, these aren't all-or-nothing guys.

I think Erick's point here is that this team can be quite better than Cantu, Ross, or Uggla combined and this horrid streak just can't last much longer.

I think our main issue is Coghlan leading off.

There's not a single main issue. There are several issues. Some injury related (JJ and Hanley) but most production related. Buck, Infante, Hanley (when healthy), Coghlan, Vasquez, Volstad and the bench have all played poorly.

Volstads last 2 starts were quality starts and has not played poorly.
