Heath Bell signs 3 year / $27M deal

Featured Replies

miami #marlins met with heath bell. team seems very aggressive. this is no publicity stunt.

madson declined to meet with marlins because offer wasnt right. but heath bell did meet with them. Jon Heyman

I read that as saying that the Marlins severely lowballed Madson and Bell would be getting an offer for the first time.

There's no reason for the Marlins to give an expensive multi-year deal to a guy like Bell. I imagine they will lowball him too.

I'll pass. We still have far more pressing needs. And he's going to get a lot of money, despite his peripherals being pretty strongly down last year. His Ks were a lot lower, his LD% was a lot higher, and yet he managed to have a very low BABIP. His ground ball % has fallen each of the last 2 years, as well. He's doing worse in all the classically most important categories for pitchers.

While Bill James' projections are pretty optimistic - I would assume because of track record - I think he might he a riskier proposition than he seems.

we better not overpay for a reliever or closer. bullpen pitchers are the most erratic thing in baseball and should never be given a long term lucrative contract. they'd be better off trading for brandon league or huston street and using our money for jose reyes and a SP

No

No Bell

No Madson

No high priced reliever, please

Thanks!

Sooo you want more of the same from Juan Carlos Oviedo? What would we call the Leo-coaster now that we know his name isn't really Leo?

Because I'm in class with a final in about an hour I won't go into specifics. But here is an article stating explicitly why signing high priced relievers to multi year deals is a terrible idea.

Basically relievers are extremely volatile and none actually live up to their big contracts.

And no, I don't want Juan Leo Oviedo Nunez back either. He won't be worth it either. Low cost bullpens and allocating funds elsewhere is the wiser move in my opinion.

Marlins are just coming off as a joke now, even ESPN is clowning them adding the word "Serious" next to any free agents the marlins PR office announces that they are pursuing.

Enough with the games, either sign someone and let the signing do the talk.. or keep on destroying the rep of the franchise more and more with this games.

lolwut

I posted something like this awhile ago on here when people were clamoring for Bell and was told I was an outright fool. I still am an outright fool, just not about this particular player.

Told by whom?

hell if i remember at this point. it was shortly after the series i'm guessing...maybe a bit before. the post is on here somewhere buried in a thread.

I guess they have competition from Blue Jays,Boston,Mets and Reds, who are also after Bell

Heath Bell is made for Petco...I really don't want him.

Uh, not really.

2.43 ERA

72-79 saves

85.1 innings (69 hits allowed), 90 strikeouts

.218 average against

3 homeruns allowed (compared to 5 allowed at home)

away splits from '09-'11

please get us a shut down closer. I'm so sick of looking through average relievers for a closer. give me a guy who we know just about every time will keep the ball in the park and get through the 9th quickly and without 3 base runners.

Id love bell, if simply because it isn't jorge julio, matt windstorm, clay hensley, kevin gregg, joe nelson, or leo juan carlos oviedo nunez.
